The Dog Island/Bug Collector

From StrategyWiki, the video game walkthrough and strategy guide wiki

The bug collector's name is Derrick and he is located in Noble's house. You can start collecting bugs after being challenged by Clark in Zoomy Village. When you pass Clark's test, you receive a bug cage, which allows you to catch and store bugs.

Using this page[edit]

There are very few bugs that you will need to specifically find to complete a quest. For the most part, you will be looking for bugs to complete your collection. In that case, look at the Bug Collector book, and find the bug you are missing in your book. The bugs in the table are laid out in the same order as the bugs in the game. When you see a bug you are missing, hold your mouse over the image until its name pops up. When you click the image, you will be taken to the appropriate spot in the bug information table. From there you can see all the locations where that bug appears. Click on one of the locations and the page will move to that location's map and setups. Locate the bug you are looking for in the setups below the map, then use its corresponding bug location letter to see where it will appear on the map.

If you are looking for a specific bug whose name you already know, you can look for it in the bug information table, follow one of the location links, then use the location's map and setups to find the bug.

Alternatively, you can also go directly to the one of the maps in the Locations and setups section to find all the bugs in that area.

Controls[edit]

When walking around, approach a bug and press the A button button when the search command pops up. To catch a bug, you must press the button when your timing bar is on the bug location bar, and you must do it before time runs out.

In the game you will see a black horizontal line across the screen. In the middle of this line is a cross-hatched area where the blue timing bar moves back and forth. As you move your cursor on the screen, your character will try to face it. The closer the dog is to directly facing the bug, the more centered the red bug location bar will be in the cross-hatched area.

If you press the A button button when the blue timing bar is over the red bug location bar, you will catch the bug. If not, the bug will get away and you will have to try again. Some bugs present a challenge by moving around the dog very quickly, making it hard to get the red bug location bar in the center. Other bugs don't move at all, but the blue timing bar moves very fast back and forth and the bug location bar is very small, making it hard to stop the timing bar on top of the location bar.

Times of the day[edit]

Some bugs only come out at certain times of the day. The day can be split up into day, night, twilight and early morning. Twilight and early morning are different parts of night and day, respectively. Here is a breakdown of what each term means:

  • Day: From just before the rooster crows to when the sky turns red at sunset.
  • Night: From when the sky turns red at sunset to just before the rooster crows.
  • Twilight: From when the sky turns red to when the sky turns dark blue. This can happen before you hear owl hoots.
  • Early Morning: From just before the rooster crows to about 60 seconds later.

Bug location mechanics[edit]

Note
Every map area, if it contains bugs, has four setups.

To understand how to find bugs, you must understand under what conditions bugs appear in the game. Unlike food and flowers, which are randomly selected as "on" or "off" at pre-defined locations, there are a few predefined setups which are randomly selected for bugs.

In any given map there are a certain amount of locations where you will find bugs. At any given location, a different bug may or may not appear depending on which setup is generated when you enter the map. By identifying a few of the bugs in different locations, sometimes just one bug, you can tell which setup you are in.

This is in contrast to food and flowers, which, in any given location will always have the same item. When you enter the map, food and flower locations are randomly set to either "on" or "off", and knowing one location's mode says nothing about any other locations.

We can use how the bug setups work, by checking a bug location to determine which setup we are in. Once you know the setup, you know where and when each bug will appear throughout the day. The best bug to use is a butterfly, because they are the most distinctive, so you will know what the bug is without having to catch it. Keep in mind that you won't be able to tell what most bugs are without trying to catch them. For instance, all butterflies are yellow while you are just running around.

An example: Zoomy Lake[edit]

Bug location D is on the first island you jump to from the hippo when you are coming from Zoomy Village. In each of the setups, a different butterfly, or no butterfly at all, is spawned. By checking this butterfly, you can see which setup you are in, and by running back to Zoomy Village and re-entering Zoomy Lake, you can force another random setup selection. So if you were trying to find the Bell Cricket in Zoomy Lake, you would run back and forth until no butterfly spawned, and then you would know you were in the correct setup.

Bug Collector book[edit]

When you talk to Derrick, he will show you the Bug Collector book. If you have any bugs in your inventory, their corresponding place in the book will flash with orange lines around it. Select a bug in the book with the Neutral dpad buttons to view a short description and/or give Derrick the bug. Initially all spots in the Bug Collector book will only show black silhouettes. When you find a bug and give it to Derrick, the spot will show the bug you caught.

Derrick will reward you for bringing him bugs. The first time you bring him a certain bug, he will add it to the Collector book. If you bring him a bug that is already in the book, he will give you one Woof. The Bug Collector book is split into four smaller books based on the bug category:

  1. A bug with beautiful wings: Butterflies
  2. Bug that flies straight: Dragonflies and cicadas
  3. Hard shelled bug that lives on tree: Beetles
  4. Bug that lives on grass and flowers: Ladybugs, grasshoppers, crickets

Completing any of the mini-books will get you a bottle of Anc Water. For completing the entire Bug Collector book, Derrick will give you the Bag Collector hat, a unique item.

Locations and setups[edit]

There are six areas on The Dog Island that have multiple bug setups.

  1. Green Meadows
  2. Treely Woods
  3. Zoomy Lake
  4. Hoya Plains
  5. Gola Highlands
  6. Ancient Grove

The last bug is found in Chiro Caves B1.

Each area has a map with letters denoting a bug location. The setup tables below the maps break the day into its four components for each bug location. Follow these steps to find a specific bug:

  1. Locate your bug in the tables.
  2. In the game, ascertain which setup you are in by matching the bugs you see to bugs in the setups.
  3. If your bug isn't in the current setup, run out of the map and back in to reset it.
  4. When you are in the correct setup, wait until the correct time of day indicated in the table, then catch your bug.
