Negative Effects

KO/Death

  • Occurs when character health reaches 0.
  • Character lies stationary on floor.
  • Cannot participate in battle.
  • Cured with a Phoenix Down (anytime) or Phoenix Pinion (in-battle only), Life/Full-Life white magic spells, and Amarant's Revive.
  • Persists after battle.

Berserk

  • Character has red sparks above head, and is glowing red.
  • Physical attack power increases, but character cannot be controlled.
  • Cured with a Remedy or Gysahl Greens.

Confuse

  • Character spins wildly on spot.
  • Character cannot be controlled; will randomly attack friends and foes. Physical attack accuracy also decreases.
  • Cured by a physical attack.
  • Can be guarded against with the Clear Headed ability.

Darkness

  • Character has a small black cloud in front of their face.
  • Physical attack accuracy greatly decreases.
  • Cured with Eye Drops, a Remedy, or the Esuna white magic spell.
  • Can be guarded against with the Bright Eyes ability.
  • Persists after battle.

Doom

  • Character has a number above their head, slowly counting down from 10.
  • Will inflict KO upon character when counter reaches 0.

Freeze

  • Character appears blue-tinted, stationary, and surrounded by small blue icicles.
  • Cannot participate in battle, and is immediately KOed if hit by a physical attack.
  • Can be guarded against with the Body Temp ability.
  • Will wear off in battle eventually.

Gradual Petrify

  • Character has a number above their head, slowly counting down from 10.
  • Will inflict Petrification upon character when counter reaches 0.
  • Cured by Soft or the Stona white magic spell.
  • Can be guarded against with the Jelly ability.

Heat

  • Character glows orange.
  • Character is immediately KOed if they take any action.
  • Can be guarded against with the Body Temp ability.
  • Will wear off in battle eventually.

Mini

  • Character is much smaller than usual.
  • Physical attack and defence power greatly reduced.
  • Cured by Remedy or the Esuna white magic spell.

Petrification

  • Character appears to be stationary, and encased in stone.
  • Cannot participate in battle.
  • Cured by Soft or the Stona white magic spell.
  • Can be guarded against with the Jelly ability.
  • Persists after battle.

Poison

  • Character has purple or green vapours above head.
  • Character HP gradually decreases.
  • Cured by Antidote, or either Panacea or Esuna white magic spells.
  • Can be guarded against with the Antibody ability.

Silence

  • Character has a small speech bubble containing two dots above their head.
  • Character cannot use magic commands.
  • Cured by Echo Screen or a Remedy, or the Esuna white magic spell.
  • Can be guarded against with the Loudmouth ability.
  • Persists after battle.

Sleep

  • Character droops, and has ZZZs over their head.
  • Cannot participate in battle.
  • Cured by the white magic spell Esuna, or a physical attack (magic attacks do not wake the character).
  • Can be guarded against by the Insomniac ability.
  • Will wear off in battle eventually.

Slow

  • Character has a series of grey arrows pointing downwards above their head. ATB gauge for that character turns grey/black.
  • Character's ATB guage fills slower.
  • Cured by a Remedy or white magic spells Haste and Esuna.
  • Can be guarded against by the Auto-Haste ability.

Stop

  • Character appears completely immobile. ATB gauge turns grey/black and does not fill.
  • Character cannot participate in battle.
  • Cured by a Remedy or the white magic spell Esuna.
  • Can be guarded against by the Locomotion ability.

Trouble

  • Character has a small crying face above their head.
  • Half of any physical damage inflicted on that character will be dealt to all characters.
  • Cured by an Annoyntment.
  • Persists after battle.

Venom

  • Character droops, and has green and purple vapours rising from their head.
  • HP and MP slowly depletes, and character cannot participate in battle.
  • Cured by an Antidote or Remedy, and the white magic spells Panacea and Esuna.
  • Can be guarded against by the Antibody ability.
  • Persists after battle (character does not lose HP/MP outside of battle).

Virus

  • No visible changes to character.
  • Character does not gain EXP or AP after battle.
  • Cured by a Vaccine.
  • Persists after battle.

Zombie

  • Character turns varying shades of brown.
  • Trance gauge immediately depleted to empty and does not fill, character does not gain EXP or AP after battle, and healing skills/some forms of damage have reverse effects (i.e. a Potion damages HP, an Ether damages MP, Regen acts like Poison, and Death fully heals HP).
  • Cured by a Magic Tag.
  • Persists after battle.
