Most enemies can be killed either by stomping or by the fireball attack. While fireballs only provide 100 points, you can stomp on multiple enemies in one jump for additional points. The first enemy in a chain is worth 100 points, and the next are worth 200, 400, 800, 1000, 2000, 4000, and 8000 points respectively. Continuing the chain further will provide 1 extra life for each enemy killed.

Special enemies may provide a different amount of points.

Enemies above the ground

Goomba Paragoomba
The Goomba is the simplest enemy. Every type of attack can defeat him. In the Giant Land (World 4) bigger versions of Goombas appear. The Paragoomba is a winged version of the Goomba. He will become a regular Goomba after just one stomp. There are two versions of Paragoombas: the red versions make small jumps, but chasing Mario, the brown versions fly and drop Micro-Goombas.
Micro-Goomba Pile Driver Micro-Goomba
The Micro-Goomba is the smallest enemy of the game. They're dropped by brown Paragoombas. They cling to Mario and pressing A rapidly is the only way to get them off of Mario. The Pile Driver Micro-Goomba is a Micro-Goomba inside a Brick. They make big jumps. They're common near other Bricks.
Shoe Goomba Koopa Troopa
The Shoe Goomba is a Goomba wearing a Goomba's Shoe. Mario can get it if he bop the Goomba off a block. Stomping on it or firing it, however, will destroy the shoe as well. The Koopa Troopa is very common, but unlike Goombas, a jump will not defeat it. Mario can stomp on it and it will be in its shell, where it can defeat enemies, break empty bricks and hit blocks with items. Other attacks, however, will defeat it completely. Red-shelled Koopas will remain on platforms whilst the green-shelled Koopas will drop off platforms. Like the Goomba, there are bigger versions later in the Giant Land.
Koopa Paratroopa Lakitu
The Koopa Paratroopa is a winged version of the Koopa Troopa. They fly or make big jumps. A stomp makes them normal Koopa Troopas and if Mario hits the block under a Paratroopa, it will be in its shell. Other attacks will defeat it completely. There are two versions of Koopa Paratroopa: the green-shelled one and the red-shelled one, but the colors of the shell, doesn't make a big difference, unlike Koopas. Like the Koopa, there are bigger versions later in the Giant Land. The Lakitu is a turtle-like enemy that drive a cloud. It throws Spiny's Eggs at Mario while flying. It can be defeated with any type of attack.

Paratroopa

Boomerang Bros. are evolved Koopas with green scales and black helmets that throw boomerangs to attack. In Super Mario Advance 4, some of their boomerangs are blue and if you kill them while a blue boomerang is in midair, the weapon will lodge itself into the dirt and Mario can pick it up and use it as a very powerful item. Buzzy Beetle

A beetle-like enemy. It has a shell like a Koopa, but cannot be killed with fireballs.

Hammer Bro.

Hammer Bros. are less evolved than the Boomerang Bros. Their scales are yellow and instead of boomerangs, they chuck hammers at Mario. They will also appear on the World Map, providing the same challenge as the Boomerang Bros. Hammer Bros. appear more often than Boomerang Bros, and often attack in pairs.

Cannonball

A diagonally-firing ball that can be killed only by stomping on, Larger horizontally-moving ones are shot out of vehicles in World 8.

Bullet Bill

A horizontally-firing bullet that can be killed only by stomping on.

Fire Snake

Rocky Wrench

An enemy in airships that can be stomped on or fired. It throw small wrenches when it gets the chance to. These projectiles cannot be destroyed, but they're very slow-moving.

Blooper

A small white squid that follows you around. Some Bloopers called Blooper Nannies have a line of Blooper babies and sometimes spread there babies around.

Cheep Cheep

A fish that is found in the water as well as flying. When it is flying, it can be stomped on.

Boss Bass

A Cheep Cheep that is twice its normal size that attempts to swallow Mario. They, like Cheep Cheeps, can leap out of the water, but cannot be stomped.

Lakitu

A cloud with a small creature which appears to be a Koopa with glasses. This foe remains in the sky often above Marios reach. It throws Spinies down to attack Mario. If Lakitu is defeated sometimes a new Lakitu will arrive after to take over the previous Lakitu's job.

Spiny

An enemy with spikes on its shell. It cannot be killed by stomping on it unless you have a Kuribo's Shoe (5-3 only) but can be destroyed with fire. These can annoy Mario when a Lakitu throws them down.

Jelectro

A jellyfish that cannot move. It cannot be destroyed at all.

Lava Lotus

A plant at the bottom of the sea that can be killed only with hammers. It spews out small slow moving spores to attack.

Spike

A fat dark-shelled Koopa that has an unlimited amount of spiked balls in its stomach and can throw them.

Hot Foot

A flame from a candle in fortresses that can follow you around. Like Boo it will only move when you turn away from it.

Buster Beetle

A Buzzy Beetle that can throw ice blocks at you. Unlike a normal Buzzy it doesn't leave a shell behind when stomped on.

Nipper

A miniature Piranha Plant that can jump to attack. Although it faces forward, jumps cause damage.

Parabeetle

An enemy whose back can be ridden on in the sky world.

Ptooie

A Piranha Plant which walks on the ground. It has a spiked ball which it raises and lowers with its mouth, because of this and its resistance to most attacks it forces Mario to take a leap of faith between the pirahna and the spiked ball. Some of these enemies are based in pipes and tend to remain sticking out unlike normal piped Piranha.

The Angry Sun

A sun about Mario's size with an angry face on it, swooping down from the sky attempting to hit Mario.
