Most enemies can be killed either by stomping or by the fireball attack. While fireballs only provide 100 points, you can stomp on multiple enemies in one jump for additional points. The first enemy in a chain is worth 100 points, and the next are worth 200, 400, 800, 1000, 2000, 4000, and 8000 points respectively. Continuing the chain further will provide 1 extra life for each enemy killed.

Special enemies may provide a different amount of points.

Enemies above the ground

Goomba Paragoomba
The Goomba is the simplest enemy. Every type of attack can defeat him. In the Giant Land (World 4) bigger versions of Goombas appear. The Paragoomba is a winged version of the Goomba. He will become a regular Goomba after just one stomp. There are two versions of Paragoombas: the red versions make small jumps, but chasing Mario, the brown versions fly and drop Micro-Goombas.
Micro-Goomba Pile Driver Micro-Goomba
The Micro-Goomba is the smallest enemy of the game. They're dropped by brown Paragoombas. They cling to Mario and pressing A rapidly is the only way to get them off of Mario. The Pile Driver Micro-Goomba is a Micro-Goomba inside a Brick. They make big jumps. They're common near other Bricks.
Shoe Goomba Koopa Troopa
The Shoe Goomba is a Goomba wearing a Goomba's Shoe. Mario can get it if he bop the Goomba off a block. Stomping on it or firing it, however, will destroy the shoe as well. The Koopa Troopa is very common, but unlike Goombas, a jump will not defeat it. Mario can stomp on it and it will be in its shell, where it can defeat enemies, break empty bricks and hit blocks with items. Other attacks, however, will defeat it completely. Red-shelled Koopas will remain on platforms whilst the green-shelled Koopas will drop off platforms. Like the Goomba, there are bigger versions later in the Giant Land.
Koopa Paratroopa Lakitu
The Koopa Paratroopa is a winged version of the Koopa Troopa. They fly or make big jumps. A stomp makes them normal Koopa Troopas and if Mario hits the block under a Paratroopa, it will be in its shell. Other attacks will defeat it completely. There are two versions of Koopa Paratroopa: the green-shelled one and the red-shelled one, but the colors of the shell, doesn't make a big difference, unlike Koopas. Like the Koopa, there are bigger versions later in the Giant Land. The Lakitu is a turtle-like enemy that drive a cloud. It throws Spiny's Eggs at Mario while flying. It can be defeated with any type of attack.
Spiny Buster Beetle
The Spinies are small Koopas, thrown by Lakitus, in the form of orange eggs. They're immune to stomps, and if Mario hits the block under a Spiny or attacks it with Raccoon Mario's tail, it will be in his shell. Other attacks defeat the Spiny completely. The Buster Beetle is a version of Buzzy Beetle that picks up Ice Blocks and throws them to Mario. Unlike the Buzzy Beetle a stomp or a fire ball defeat it completely. Other attacks defeat it completely.
Parabeetle Muncher
The Parabeetle is the winged version of the Buzzy Beetle. Mario can hop on their back for a ride allowing him to traverse air levels (making them one of the very few enemies that cannot be defeated by jumping on them). They are immune to fireballs but vulnerable to tail attacks, Star and hammers. The Muncher is a black, invincible, Nipper Plant. The only way to kill a Muncher is turn it into a coin with a Switch Block. Invincible Mario can walk on Munchers. Some of them are frozen in the ice.
Nipper Plant Fire Nipper Plant
The Nipper Plant is a miniature white Piranha Plant. They would patrol an area and Jump up towards Mario when he passes them. Nipper Plants can hop around, making it more difficult for the player to land safely. They can be killed with all types of attack, but jump. The Fire Nipper Plant is a Nipper Plant that spits three fireballs to Mario. There is only one Fire Nipper Plant in the entire game. Like Nipper Plant it can be killed with all types of attack, but jump.
Ptooie Venus Fire Trap
The Ptooie is a type of Piranha Plant. A Ptooie can be identified by the spiked ball it suspends in the air over its mouth. Occasionally, Ptooies will spit the spiked ball high into the air in order to inflict damage on passing travellers. There are two types of Ptooies: some have legs and walk, some are into pipes. They can be killed with all types of attack, but jump. The Venus Fire Trap is a Piranha Plant that throws fireballs to Mario. Like normal Piranha Plants, they resides into pipes or quicksand. They can be killed with all types of attack, but jump.
Piranha Plant Boomerang Brother
The Piranha Plant is an aggressive plant that lives in pipes or in the quicksand. They attack by biting Mario if he is close enough to them. Oddly, Piranha Plants won't emerge from their pipe if Mario is touching or standing directly on top of it. They can be killed with all types of attack, but jump. The Boomerang Bro. is a type of Hammer Bro. with green skin. They would attack Mario by throwing multiple boomerangs which would circle back if they missed. Two Boomerang Bros. are the bosses of the first Bowser's Tank and the Coin Ships. They can be killed with all types of attack. They appear as enemies in the map of World 2.
Hammer Brother Fire Brother
The Hammer Bros. are evolutes Koopas with a black helmet and yellow skin. They would attack Mario by throwing multiple hammers. They aren't very common in the levels, but they also appear as enemies in the maps of World 1, 3, 5, 6. Two Hammer Brothers are also the bosses of some Coin Ships. They can be killed with all types of attack. The Fire Bro. is the least common type of Hammer Brother. Only three Fire Bros. appear in the entire game: two are the enemies of a secret part of the World 2 map, and the other one appears in in the first Hand Trap level of Dark Land. They have red skin and they spit fireballs to Mario, in a similar manner to Fire Mario. They can be killed with all types of attack.
Sledge Brothers Angry Sun
The Sledge Bro. is a larger version of the Hammer Bro. It has a green skin and it throws hammer slower than Hammer Brothers. Sledge Bros. make big jumps, and if Mario is on the terrain when a Sledge Bro. touches the ground after a jump, he will take damage. They appear mostly in Giant Land, and they are the enemies on the map of that world. They can be killed with all types of attack. The Angry Suns are very small suns (the size of powered-up Mario) with an angry face. They are the second least common enemy of the game. In fact, only two Angry Suns appear: one in the World 2-Quicksand and the other in the World 8-2. To attack Mario, an Angry Sun would swoop down in a U-shaped arch, attempting to hit the plumber. They can be killed with a Koopa shell, an hammer of Hammer Mario or with Invincible Mario.
Fire Snake Fire Chomp
The Fire Snake is a flame with four fireballs behind it. If a Fire Snake saw Mario, it would chase him by bouncing and try to touch him with its flaming body. A Fire Snake could only be defeated by either hitting it with a Shell or Hammer, by having Mario touch it while he is empowered by a Starman or by having Mario whack it with his tail as either Raccoon Mario or Tanooki Mario or a stomp from Statue Mario. The Fire Chomp is a Chain-Chomp-like (see below) enemy, but with 4 fireballs instead of a chain. They attack by flying and spitting their fireballs to Mario. When they finish fireballs, they will chase Mario and they explode. They can be defeated with stomps, hammers, Star, and tail whacks.
Chain Chomp Missile Bill
Chain Chomps bear a resemblance to a ball and chain and behave in a very dog-like manner, to the point where they even start to bark and whimper. They're attached to a block, but they're detached at 160 seconds. There are four ways to defeat Chain Chomps: using a Star, throwing a Koopa shell or a hammer at it as Hammer Mario, and stomping on it as a statue from Tanooki Mario. The Missile Bill is a red type of Bullet Bill (see in "enemies of airships and tanks" section). A Missile Bill would turn around once if it missed its target, but would continue going forward without turning around any more after missing twice.

Enemies underwater

Cheep-Cheep Big Bertha
The Cheep-Cheep is the simplest underwater enemy. There are three versions of it: the red version, the green version and the black (blue in remakes) version. The red version swims fast and some red Cheep-Cheeps jump out of the water or the lava, the green version is the slowest and the black spiked version is the fastest. Cheep-Cheeps can be killed with fire, a shell, hammers, Tanooki Mario's statue stomp, with Invincible Mario or with a jump, when they are out of the water. The Big Bertha is a bigger Cheep-Cheep mother. She always carries a child Cheep-Cheep in her mouth, occasionally letting it out. It can be killed with fire, hammers, Tanooki Mario's statue stomp or with Invincible Mario.
Blooper Blooper Nanny
The Blooper is a common underwater enemy. It will follow Mario relentlessly. Every type of attack, but jump and hitting the block under it, can kill it. A Blooper Nanny is a Blooper with Blooper kids. When she begins to glow, her kids will "explode" away from her making it harder to swim. More kids appear a few seconds later. Just like normal Bloopers, they follow Mario in an attempt to hurt him. Every type of attack, but jump and hitting the block under it, can kill it.
Boss Bass Jelectro
The Boss Bass is a big hungry Cheep-Cheep. They swim on the surface of the water trying to lunge out and eat Mario when he gets too close. Boss Bass will defeat Mario in one gulp even if he was Statue Mario. In some of the levels, platforms rise and fall, making Mario an easy target. Throwing Ice blocks, shells, hammers, and fireballs can defeat them as well as tail attacks and Star, but they'll eventually come back. Jelectros are glowing electric jellyfish that stay in one place. They are invincible and ALWAYS take damage to Mario, if he touch them. They usually appear in big groups.
Lava Lotus
The Lava Lotus is a big flower that lives underwater. They are capable of creating and storing fireballs under their transparent leaves and attack by opening up to release them. The fireballs can go through platforms and make navigating underwater difficult. The number they shoot out is random and can be up to five at a time. The fireballs travel rather slowly and in a straight line from their point of release.

Enemies underground

Buzzy Beetle Upside-down Buzzy Beetle
The Buzzy Beetle is a turtle-like creature with a hard, outer shell. They are similar to green Koopas; they fall from the platforms and jumping on a Buzzy Beetle make it go into its shell. A Buzzy Beetle's shell is similar to a Koopa's shell, it can be kicked for destroy blocks and enemies. They're immune to fire, and if Mario hits the block under a Buzzy Beetle, he attacks it with Raccoon Mario's tail or he stomps it, it will be in his shell. Other attacks defeat the Buzzy Beetle completely. The Upside-down Buzzy Beetle is a Buzzy Beetle that walks on the ceilings of the caves. To attack Mario, they can drop, and spin in their shell along the ground to attack. Mario can stomp on the shell, hit the block under it or attack it with tail attack, for stop the shell (and he can use it like a Koopa's shell). After some second from when Mario stops the shell, the Buzzy Beetle reappears, but it doesn't walk on the ceiling.
Upside-down Spiny Spike
The Upside-down Spiny is a Spiny that walks on the ceilings of the caves. To attack Mario, they can drop, and spin in their shell along the ground to attack. Mario can stomp on the shell, hit the block under it or attack it with tail attack, for stop the shell (and he can use it like a Koopa's shell). After some second from when Mario stops the shell, the Spiny reappears, but it doesn't walk on the ceiling. This is the only time that Mario can use a Spiny's shell. Spikes are green Koopa-duck-like enemies. They attack by pulling spiked balls out of their stomachs and throwing them at Mario . Like Lakitus, they have unlimited amounts of ammo. The spiked balls go horizontally along a straight line trajectory and they can go through blocks and terrain. Spikes can be killed with all types of attack.

Enemies of the Fortress

Boo Dry Bones
The Boo is a small white ghost. The Boo will shield his face if Mario looks at it, but it will start chasing if Mario looks away. Boos can be defeated only with hammers or Invincible Mario. The Dry Bones is a skeletal version of the Koopa Troopa. Dry Bones can be stomped on the head and turned into a pile of bones; however, they will soon reform, completely unharmed. The only ways to destroy them permanently are with a Star or the Hammer Suit. Unlike normal Koopas, Dry Bones is immune to the tail of Raccoon Mario and the fireballs.
Bowser's Statue Hot Foot
The Bowser's Statue is a little statue of Bowser. Most of them split laser to Mario, but some of them are decorative. They are indestructible. The Hot Foot is a flame that inhabits the candles. Their behavior is similar to Boos. If Mario looks at one it will stand still. If Mario looks away it will resume walking towards them. Hot Foot can only be defeated by throwing an hammer as Hammer Mario at it or being invincible while touching it.
Podoboo Roto-Disc
The Poodoboo is a living fireball that jumps out of lava. They appear in some fortresses and in the second Hand Trap level of Dark Land. They can be defeated with an hammer of Hammer Mario or with Invincible Mario. The Roto-Disc is a glowing energy disc. It spins around a block, making maneuvers difficult to Mario. It can be destroyed only with Tanooki Mario's statue stomp.
Thwomp Stretch
The Thwomp is a living square rock. They will try to squish Mario under their weight whenever he pass beneath them. Thwomps are possible to avoid easily by using the Statue Mario ability. With this, it's impossible for Thwomps to destroy Mario by crashing against him from above. However, only ways for defeating a Thwomp completely is with an hammer, with Invincible Mario or with Statue Mario's stomp. Stretches are Boos attached to white platforms. They are found exclusively in fortresses and are more of an obstacle than a true enemy. As Mario attempt to pass, a Boo will rise from the top and bottom of the platform and attempt to hit him by the Boo moving left to right. Stretches are usually found in groups, making them a formidable foe. Stretches can only be defeated with hammers or with a Star.

Enemies in the Airships, Tanks and Warships

Cannonball Bullet Bill
Cannonballs are heavy metal spheres that are launched from cannons at high speeds. There are many modes to destroy them: a stomp, an hammer, a Statue stomp ow with Invincible Mario. Bullet Bills are black missile-like projectiles launched by Bill Blasters. The Bill Blasters are placed very strategically in almost all levels. One of the most frustrating places is on the ground, so even a normal-sized Mario will have to jump over them. These ones could be defeated with a Koopa Shell, a Jump, a Star, a Hammer, a tail attack, or a Bob-omb (see below) on certain levels.
Rocky Wrench Bob-omb
The Rocky Wrench is a mole with a black shell. Upon sighting Mario, a Rocky Wrench will pop out of its hole on the vehicles and throw wrenches at him, before descending back into its hole. They can be killed with all types of attack. The Bob-omb is a living bomb. Often, they are launched by cannons, but sometimes, they are already walking. If Mario stomp on one, it will become stationary and capable of being carried and launched against enemies. However, it will explode in a few seconds, even if Mario is still carrying it. Also, in the Bowser's Tanks, Bob-ombs are self-exploding: after some second from when they start to walk, they explode. They can be destroyed with an hammer, a statue stomp, a Star, a tail attack or with another Bob-omb.

Rocky Wrench

An enemy in airships that can be stomped on or fired. It throw small wrenches when it gets the chance to. These projectiles cannot be destroyed, but they're very slow-moving.

Bob-omb

An enemy that will make an explosion shortly after being jumped on and stunned. It can be thrown when it is stunned.

Engine

A flame that comes out of cylindrical blocks that can only be stopped by Tanooki Mario's statue maneuver.
