Para-Beetles are in this side-scrolling level. Ride on them until the middle, and then search for a P-switch that will switch bricks and coins, and shortly after it is the exit pipe.
{{Scrolling map|SMB3-5-6.png{{!}}1154px}}
*This autoscrolling level is the only level in the game with Para-Beetles. These shells fly to the left, but carry you to the top when you jump on them.
*If you can't fly you'll have a hard time jumping from shell to shell to cross the pit. It requires very precise jumps to land on the shells as they move.
*The first block you see contains a raccoon leaf.
*Once you see brick blocks, jump down to the bottom row and jump at the second brick block from the right to uncover a P-Switch. Step on it and the coins will form platforms that lead you to the end. Just watch out for the Fire Chomp wandering around there.
*The ending area has a Lakitu just like 5-4, and you can do the same 1-Up trick here.

SMB3-Level5.png

World 5 is called The Sky. Naturally, Raccoon and Tanooki Mario have a great advantage in this world, because many of the levels are full of pits and other areas where flying can be advantageous. It is possible to beat this world as normal Mario as well, but you will have to be very confident in your jumps.

This world is composed of two parts. The first part (left on the map) is the ground part, which is where you start out. Beating the tower level leads you to the sky part (right on the map), at the lone pipe. You can go back down if you wish, but to get back up you'll have to beat the tower level again.

The mushroom house on the ground offers a Tanooki Suit only. Of the two ones in the sky, the top one has either a leaf, a flower or a Tanooki Suit. The bottom features the standard mushroom/leaf/flower selection.

This level features standard Hammer Bros. They are on both parts of the map, but cannot move between the two parts. Beating them awards you a starman, a P-Wing and a Music Box.

5-1

SMB3-5-1.png
  • If you're Raccoon or Tanooki Mario, fly straight up at the beginning of the level and enter the pipe to get into a bonus area (see below).
  • The first enemy you see is new, but it does nothing here, just jump over it. Bump into the first wooden block to get a raccoon leaf.
  • The Chain Chomps can be annoying, since they're easily able to hurt you as you're trying to climb the blue structure. You'll need to be careful. As Tanooki Mario, you can kill the Chain Chomps with your statue form, but it's a bit tricky.
  • As you're climbing up, you'll notice a new enemy: Nippers. These just stand around at first, but if you jump over them they will take a hop in an attempt to bite you. You'll need to perform large jumps over these to not get hit. Raccoon and Tanooki Mario can use their tail to defeat these, fireballs will also take them out.
  • One of the Chain Chomps is guarding a block with a raccoon tail inside. If you really want to get it, you can climb all the way to the top, take the starman from the group of blocks, run back, grab the continuous starman and run right into the Chain Chomp to kill him. It's usually not worth it though.
  • Watch the Nippers behind the blue structure, If you jump down carelessly, you might just jump into one.

Bonus area

SMB3-5-1-bonus.png
  • You can grab the treasure if you want, but it's best to first go down and enter the pipe there. It will return you to the main level, but inside the blue structure, which you normally can't get into.
  • There, the brick blocks have a total of four 1-up mushrooms. But don't jump at all the blocks at once because the 1-ups will disappear, instead jump at them one at a time and collect the 1-up mushroom before jumping at the next one.
  • Fly straight up and hit the leftmost brick block to reveal a P-Switch. Break through the other brick blocks (watch the Chain Chomp), step on the switch and fall down again. Two groups of coins will appear, each forming a giant digit "3".
  • Once you are done, you can either complete the level normally, or go back through the pipe to reappear in the bonus room.
  • To grab the treasure, run back and forth to fill up your P meter, then duck and jump so you fly while ducking. Fly into the narrow passage and stand up and the game automatically pushes you to the right. The treasure chest contains a Music Box, the level will automatically be completed once you collect it.

5-2

Part 1

SMB3-5-2_1.png
  • There's nothing interesting in here. Enter the pipe to get into the action and to part 2.

Part 2

SMB3-5-2_2.png
  • Don't touch any buttons and you will land on a note block. From here, your job is to climb up the various blocks to get to the pipe at the top, which then leads to part 3.
  • One of the note blocks contains a raccoon leaf. Since it falls down though, this is not quite useful.
  • Watch out for Koopa Troopas dropping from above. They can be rather annoying as they like to drop down right on you.
  • If you fall down, you can still complete the level, but you'll have to use another route. Once you end up in the water, enter the middle pipe to get to part 3b.

Part 3

SMB3-5-2_3.png
  • This level has Goombas on slopes, simply slide down to kill them easily.
  • After the second set of Goombas, enter the pipe you see to get to the bonus area (see below).
  • Despite what the situation makes you to believe, the block on the ground doesn't contain anything other than a coin. Therefore, don't bother with the green Para-Troopa.
  • The pipe at the end leads to part 4.

Part 3b

SMB3-5-2_3b.png
  • This is where you end up if you fell down while trying to climb the blocks. First of all, you may want to get out of the pool of water because there's a Cheep-Cheep there.
  • You'll see the enemy from 5-1 here again. They're called Buster Beetles, and attack by picking up ice blocks from the ground and throwing them at you. Besides this, they can't really do anything else though, so just evade the blocks and you should be fine.
  • You can also use the ice blocks yourself. They're especially useful against the Piranha Plants and of course against the Buster Beetles as well.
  • The pipe at the end leads to part 4, just like the one in the other area.

Part 4

SMB3-5-2_4.png
  • This is the ending area. There's nothing in here, so just get the goal card to end the level.

Bonus area

SMB3-5-2-bonus.png
  • If you're small and can't break the brick blocks, jump at the leftmost one to get a mushroom (if you're big it contains a flower). Then, break the brick blocks and jump at the giant ? block to get three 1-up mushrooms. Once you're done, enter the pipe to return to part 3.

5-3

SMB3-5-3.png
  • At the beginning, enter the pipe. You'll appear in the middle area, in the top right corner.
  • This is the only level in the entire game featuring the Kuribo's Shoe. To get one of these, you must lure a Kuribo's Goomba onto a brick block, then jump at the brick block from below to knock the Goomba out of the shoe. The shoe allows you to stomp on any enemy, including Piranha Plants and Spinies.
  • The first ? block contains a raccoon leaf, but watch out for the Spiny. You may want to return with the Kuribo's Shoe to get the item.
  • After a while you'll see black plants. These are called Munchers, they are completely invincible and will hurt you if you touch them. This of course does not apply if you have the Kuribo's Shoe, so jump onto the row of Munchers and get the 1-up mushroom from the second brick block from the left.
  • At the very left side, the pipe leads down into the bottom area. It provides one last oppotunity to get a Kuribo's Shoe if you don't have one. Remove the ice blocks and lure the Kuribo's Goomba on top of the brick blocks.
  • Bouncing off the Piranha Plants with the Kuribo's Shoe allows you to jump very far. Use that to your advantage.
  • The pipe at the end takes you to the ending area, which is empty apart from the goal card. You automatically lose the Kuribo's Shoe once you exit the level.

Fortress 1

Part 1

SMB3-5-Fortress1_1.png
  • Right at the beginning, you'll have to perform a tricky jump over the lava pit while avoiding both the Podoboo and the Roto-Disc. Watch them and jump over when you think you have a clear path.
  • If you're Tanooki Mario, you can kill both the Thwomps and the Roto-Discs with your statue form if they bother you too much.
  • Once you see brick blocks overhead, break through and jump up. Get the raccoon leaf from the ? block if you need it, then fly up to the pipe to get to the bonus area (see below).
  • At the second Thwomp, there is a brick block to his left which contains another leaf.
  • The area with the Boo Diddley, the Roto-Disc and the Thwomp can be tricky. Tanooki Mario is best off, even if he still can't kill the Boo Diddley. You should try to lure the Boo Diddley far away before attempting this part.
  • Near the end, you should see a Thwomp, then another lava pit. You can just run across and jump, the Thwomp can't get you. The door leads to part 2.

Part 2

SMB3-5-Fortress1_2.png
  • Run forward to meet Boom-Boom. Jump on him three times or feed him five fireballs, as always, to defeat him.

Bonus area

SMB3-5-Fortress1-bonus.png
  • You'll see some coins forming an arrow pointing up. Fly up here to discover a total of three hidden 1-up mushrooms. Enter the pipe to return to part 1 near the Boo Diddley.

Tower

Part 1

SMB3-5-Tower_1.png
  • At the beginning you need to dodge or, as a Tanooki, kill the Roto-Discs to get to a pipe taking you up one floor. One of the Roto-Discs rotates around a block holding a raccoon leaf.
  • At the top, pass the Thwomps and get to the pipe to arrive at part 2.

Part 2

SMB3-5-Tower_2.png
  • Watch out for the Pile Driver Micro-Goombas here. Either dodge them into the pit, or jump on them to kill them.
  • If you're Raccoon or Tanooki Mario, on the middle tower wag your tail against the middle brick block for a 1-up mushroom.
  • If you have a P-Wing (and only if you have a P-Wing), you can fly over the entire brick block structure to get to a hidden area on the other side with three 1-up mushrooms. They're however insanely hard to collect since you cannot see anything, as the screen won't scroll there.
  • As Raccoon or Tanooki Mario, wag your tail against the brick blocks next to the pipe for some coins. Enter it to get to part 3.

Part 3

SMB3-5-Tower_3.png
  • Carefully jump over the spike pit and avoid the Thwomp and the Roto-Disc. The pipe takes you up one floor again.
  • The top area is empty, so just enter the pipe there to get to part 4.

Part 4

SMB3-5-Tower_4.png
  • Again, if you're Raccoon or Tanooki Mario you can wag your tail against the brick blocks next to the pipe for some coins.
  • Watch the Koopa Troopa when you jump onto the clouds. Jump at the only brick block to reveal a vine.
  • Climb it up, then go through the pipe there to finish the level and appear in the sky part of this world.

5-4

SMB3-5-4.png
  • The first block you see contains a raccoon leaf. As Raccoon or Tanooki Mario, you can use the initial platform to take flight. This will take you to cloud platforms in the sky with some coins on them. You can start flying from here to skip the entire stage.
  • The first three lifts spin around endlessly, so jump over them to avoid them. The next one does not spin around, but moves when you jump on it, similar to a scale. Jump to the next, spinning lifts while they spin so you land on them exactly as they stop, then cross the area to get to the next cloud platform.
  • The waterfalls can give you some difficulties. Press A repeatedly to avoid getting pushed down into the abyss.
  • Watch the green Para-Troopa when you jump over to the pipe. It leads to the ending area, where Lakitu is waiting for you. You can get a free 1-Up if you wait until he drops four Spinies and then get the card, but this is not easy.

5-5

SMB3-5-5.png
  • This level is largely made of donut blocks, which fall down if you stand on them too long. Therefore, keep jumping or running and only rest on solid blocks.
  • You should absolutely try to avoid the Micro-Goombas. They can really screw you over in this level.
  • There are a total of four raccoon leaves in the entire level: the first one is hidden in the top wooden block before the pipes, the second one is in the first ? block, the third one is in the rightmost brick block near the end, and the fourth one is right next to the third one inside a wooden block.
  • There are two pipes blocked off by brick blocks. The right one leads to a bonus area (see below). Either use Raccoon Mario's tail, or a Koopa shell to destroy the brick blocks.
  • You'll see a new enemy in this level: a Fire Chomp. They're similar to Chain Chomps, but fly around the level and shoot small flames at you. You can simply stomp on them to kill them.
  • Collecting 28 coins (i. e. every single one) unlocks the White Mushroom House. This requires getting into the bonus area, and also collecting the set of coins under the donut blocks.

Bonus area

SMB3-5-5-bonus.png
  • Jump at the giant ? block to get a Tanooki Suit. Exit the area to end up near the end of the level.

5-6

SMB3-5-6.png
  • This autoscrolling level is the only level in the game with Para-Beetles. These shells fly to the left, but carry you to the top when you jump on them.
  • If you can't fly you'll have a hard time jumping from shell to shell to cross the pit. It requires very precise jumps to land on the shells as they move.
  • The first block you see contains a raccoon leaf.
  • Once you see brick blocks, jump down to the bottom row and jump at the second brick block from the right to uncover a P-Switch. Step on it and the coins will form platforms that lead you to the end. Just watch out for the Fire Chomp wandering around there.
  • The ending area has a Lakitu just like 5-4, and you can do the same 1-Up trick here.

5-7

If you start the level with a Starman, you'll be able to get a few in this level. This level has a pipe that will take you to the ground. If you have a P-wing, you can get a number of bricks near the top of the ground part of this level.

(Variant: One block on the ground is white in the NES version, but blue in Super Mario All-Stars. The block's color was changed to prevent a glitch.)

Fortress

After entering the pipe, there is a room with a lot of lava. Try to avoid it. There's a starman in one of the ? blocks that you can use to avoid the Podoboos. The pipe at the end takes you to one more lava pit, and then to Boom Boom's room.

5-8

The main challenge is avoiding the Lakitu and Spinys before getting to the exit pipe.

5-9

A diagonally-scrolling level! Jump onto each elevator, avoiding the Fire Chomps, and get to the exit pipe.

Airship

The king has been transformed into a bird. This is a tough airship. Roy is very hard, If you hit on him 3 times, you'll get the wand and a letter from the Princess with a Jugem Cloud.
