The maximum amount of hearts that Link can have is 20: he starts with 3, and collects 8 from each of the game's dungeons. The remaining 9 are earned by collecting the 36 pieces of heart throughout the game. Collecting four pieces of heart will add another heart to Link's health.

The 36 piece of hearts can be found in these locations (by area, in approximate order of visiting):

  • Lost Woods, child: Play Saria's Song to the Skull Kid to the left of the entrance, and he will give you a piece of heart.
  • Lost Woods, child: Win the Skull Kids' memory game three times in the grotto to the right of the entrance to earn a piece of heart and a handful of rupees.
  • Lon Lon Ranch, child: There is a door to the north of Lon Lon Ranch, on the far wall to the right of the entrance. Inside, push the blocks to reveal a crawlspace in the corner. At the end of the crawlspace is the piece of heart.
  • Hyrule Field, child: In the enclosure blocking the entrance to Lake Hylia, bomb the ground in the centre to reveal a hole. Inside, a Deku Scrub will sell you the piece of heart for 10 rupees.
  • Hyrule Field, adult: There's a hole near one of the trees west of Hyrule Castle. Inside, there is a piece of heart several metres underwater. You need the Gold Scale (or Iron Boots) in order to get it.
  • Hyrule Castle Town, child: A lady in a house in the alley has lost her white dog. Bring her dog to her (there's a few white dogs, and a lot of brown ones, but the one you want is in the main square) for a piece of heart.
  • Hyrule Castle Town, child: Complete the Treasure Chest game (either through incredible luck, or with the assistance of the Lens of Truth) for this piece of heart.
  • Hyrule Castle Town, child: One of the random prizes for the Bombchu Bowling Game is a piece of heart.
  • Kakariko Village, child: The owl who offers you a lift from the summit of Death Mountain will drop you on the roof of the farmhouse in Kakariko Village. From here, go left and drop down onto the roof of the Cucco's shelter, and enter the hole. Inside is a piece of heart, as well as an inexplicable cow.
  • Kakariko Village, either: As a reward for collecting 50 Gold Skulltula tokens, you're given a piece of heart.
  • Kakariko Village, adult: This piece of heart is in the windmill. You can see it throughout the game, but to get it, you need to complete Dampé's race. You wil come out just opposite the piece of heart, and it's a simple matter to go over and get it.

Kakariko Village, adult: There's a lonely man who's been sitting on the roof of one of the houses in Kakariko. Use the longshot to go over and talk to him, and he'll give you a piece of heart.

  • Kakariko Graveyard, child: A piece of heart is one of the random prizes for Dampé's Gravedigging Tour game. To minimise the rupees you spend, ensure that Dampé is digging on soft soil, not cobblestone.
  • Kakariko Graveyard, child: One of the graves on the top row can be pushed open. Inside is a Redead. Kill it, then play the Sun's Song to reveal a chest containing a piece of heart.
  • Kakariko Graveyard, adult: As a child, plant a magic bean in the soil outside the laboratory. Return as an adult and ride the platform up to the piece of heart.
  • Kakariko Graveyard, adult: Play Dampé's race, and finish it quickly (the time varies per version). In order to make the time, you'll need to skip the cavern area by using the Longshot on one of the torches at the top of the path.
  • Death Mountain Trail, either: As a child, plant a magic bean in the soil just outside the entrance to Dodongo's Cavern. Ride the platform up above the entrance to the piece of heart. Alternatively, you might be able to jump off the terrace outside the entrance to Goron City, key word 'might'.
  • Goron City, child: Once you've opened up Darunia's house, light the four torches around the pot at the bottom of Goron City. Throw a bomb flower in the now spinning pot to stop it. It will stop showing one of three faces, depending on what time you threw the bomb flower in. If the pot stops on 'happy', a piece of heart will fly out.
  • Death Mountain Crater, adult: As a child, warp in using the Bolero of Fire and plant a magic bean in the soil just next to the insignia on the ground. Ride the platform as an adult until it reaches the piece of heart in the smoke.
  • Death Mountain Crater, adult: You can either ride the bean platform, which will pass this piece of heart in a small hole inside one of the cliffs, or you can climb down to it.
  • Zora's River, child: Pick up the Cucco at the Hyrule Field end and go to the small rise near the Water Tektites. Jump off it and float towards the platform with the piece of heart.
  • Zora's River, child: Pick up the Cucco at the Hyrule Field end and carry it all the way to the waterfall. You will occasionally have to throw it onto a platform in order to climb up, and be sure not to throw the Cucco in the water. Once you have reached the waterfall, float over to the piece of heart on the separated platform.
  • Zora's River, child: Play the Song of Storms to the frogs on the log near the Water Tektites, and they'll give you a piece of heart.
  • Zora's River, child: Play the other five songs (Zelda's Lullaby, Song of Time, Sun's Song, Saria's Song and Epona's Song) to the frogs on the log near the Water Tektites to make them grow. When all five have grown, they will allow you to play a bug-catching game. Win this game (it's difficult, but if you establish a tempo and keep to it, it's easier) to earn a piece of heart.
  • Zora's Domain, child: Light the torches near and behind the waterfall to make a chest appear which contains the piece of heart. You can get a Deku Stick and run the flame from the throne room to the bottom of the stairs, then to just outside the shop, then to the torch int he water, and then behind the waterfall (without falling in the water). Alternatively, you can use Din's Fire behind the waterfall, then run a flame from behind the waterfall to the torch in the water, and then to just outside the shop.
  • Lake Hylia, child: The prize for catching a ten-pound fish in the Fishing Game as a child is a piece of heart.
  • Lake Hylia, adult: Dive to the bottom of the pool in the laboratory, then talk to the professor. He will give you a piece of heart.
  • Lake Hylia, adult: As a child, plant a magic bean in the soil outside the laboratory. Return as an adult and ride the platform up to the roof, and climb the observatory to find this piece of heart.
  • Zora's Fountain, adult: On the furthest iceberg. You'll need to jump on tseveral spinning icebergs to get it.
  • Zora's Fountain, adult: Once you've found the Iron Boots, use them in the lake to drop to the lakebed. At the very bottom is a heart piece. (If you don't have the Zora Tunic, you'll want to do this quickly.)
  • Ice Cavern, adult: One of the side rooms has a blue fire fountain next to a block of red ice. Melt the ice for a heart piece.
  • Gerudo Valley, adult: As a child, plant a magic bean in the soil on the stone platform along the cliff (you may need a Cucco to reach it). Ride the platform as an adult up the river, and jump through the waterfall to this piece of heart.
  • Gerudo Valley, adult: Break open the crate on the stone platform along the cliff to reveal a piece of heart.
  • Gerudo Fortress, adult: On the roof of the middle building is a chest containing a piece of heart.
  • Gerudo Fortress, adult: The prize for scoring at least 1000 points in the Horseback Archery game is a piece of heart.
  • Desert Colossus, adult: As a child, warp here using the Requiem of Spirit and plant a magic bean in the soil here. Return as an adult and ride the platform, and jump off as it passes the piece of heart.
