This page needs images of controls for the Nintendo 64 from the controller buttons category to make learning the controls easier. If a set of controller button images is available for this system, please add them. If a set of controller images isn't available, it might need to be brought up on StrategyWiki:Staff lounge.

Nintendo 64 Version

  • Control Stick: Move Link; aim weapons; move cursor for menu selection
  • A-Button: Perform an action; jump; roll; advance dialog; confirm menu selection; play ocarina note
    • The A-Button is context sensitive, and its purpose will change depending on the situation.
  • B-Button: Attack with sword; cancel; skip dialog; save (on menu)
    • Move the Control Stick while pressing B for different attacks.
  • Hold B: Sword spin stance (without magic) or charge sword spin (with magic)
  • Start: Pause and bring up the menu
  • Z-Button: Use the Z-Targeting system to lock on to the nearest object, monster, or person; scroll left through subscreens; center the camera behind Link
    • While locked on, use B to attack, or A to talk
    • The Z-Targeting system can be configured on the options menu of the game select screen. In "switch" mode, press Z once to lock on, and again to unlock. In "hold" mode, hold Z to lock on and release to unlock.
  • R-Button: Raise shield; scroll right through subscreens
    • Use to deflect projectiles and block attacks. If targeting an object, Link can move around while blocking.
    • If an enemy is Z-Targeted while Link is swimming, the shield can still be used.
  • L-Button: Show/hide onscreen mini-map
  • C-Up: First-person view; respond to Navi
  • C-Left, C-Down, C-Right: Use assigned item or weapon
    • C-buttons are assigned on the inventory menu.
    • All C-buttons are used to play ocarina notes.
