Tekken Tag Tournament is a one-on-one fighting arcade game that got released by Namco in 1999; it runs upon the company's System 12 hardware, and as the name suggests, it is the fourth title in the Tekken series. However, unlike its three predecessors, it is not canonical to this series' storyline (and is more of a series compilation that gives the fans the opportunity to play with almost every character introduced in it up to that point, including many of the ones who had apparently been killed off for the main storyline) - and of all its returning characters, Kazuya Mishima was the most heavily promoted as featured prominently on the game's cover art and promotional material, despite his absence from Tekken 3 (but he returned in Tekken 4 in 2001). Originally sold as a conversion kit for Tekken 3, the game was later ported to the PlayStation 2 in Japan on March 30, 2000 (and later in the US and EU on October 25 and November 24 of that same year); the graphics were also updated in this version.

The game also adds a new fifth button to its control panel, for "tagging"; also, only twenty characters shall be selectable when the cabinet is turned on for the first time, but a month after the NVRAM has been initialised, it will introduce one new character per week over a period of fourteen weeks until all thirty-four characters have become selectable. After defeating six other teams of two characters, the players' chosen characters have to face off against their specific mini-bosses on the seventh stage - and once they have defeated them, they have to fight the mysterious Unknown on the eighth stage. Also, if the players' chosen characters should win ten matches in succession Tetsujin will turn gold.
