Wright Anything Agency[edit]

You got Orla a Not Guilty verdict, but now Buckler has been arrested. Athena wants to storm down to the detention center and talk to her, but Phoenix thinks she'll be in questioning, and suggests searching for new evidence instead. Apollo, still stuck on office duty, cleans out your unnecessary evidence, and you move to the crime scene.

Shipshape Aquarium - Orca Pool[edit]

When you arrive, the pool has been mostly drained, and poor Orla is down at the bottom. Detective Fulbright appears, and Athena lays into him for arresting Buckler. Talk to Fulbright:

DD Security Card.png
  • Why arrest Buckler?: According to the detective, a security card is needed to enter the orca room, and Buckler and Shipley were the only ones with cards. Moreover, there's proof Buckler used her card on the day of the murder. The security card is added to the court record. Athena suggests that someone else could have used the card, but it turns out Buckler had said she was in the orca pool room, cleaning the pool early in the morning. And to make matters worse, she also confirmed she had been fighting with the captain, and was the last person seen with him.
DD Prescription Bag.png

Fulbright is stuck at the crime scene, so he asks for a favor. The police confiscated a bag of her medicine when they searched the house, and the detective asks you to give it to her. The prescription bag is added to the Court Record. Between this and her calendar, you have lots of Buckler's stuff, but you can't talk to her while she's in questioning. And since the crime scene is off-limits, the only thing you can do is talk to other people in the aquarium. Move to the Pub O'Danger.

Shipshape Aquarium - Pub O'Danger[edit]

The closed door from yesterday is now open, so of course you have to sneak in and check it out. A strange man in a mask yells at Athena for entering without knocking, and introduces himself as Dr. Herman Crab, the aquarium's veterinarian. Talk to Crab:

  • Herman Crab: Apparently Dr. Crab wasn't at the aquarium yesterday. However, he lives at the aquarium, since he's responsible for keeping all of the animals healthy.
  • The penguin chick: A small penguin chick lives in Dr. Crab's hair, which captures Athena's heart. The chick attacks Athena, because, according to the doctor, the chick imprinted on him and doesn't like anyone else. Her name is Sniper, and her mother is Rifle, the penguin from yesterday.
  • About the murder: Crab still can't believe the captain is gone, and says he got along with him fine. Shipley was the one responsible for Crab's fancy laboratory.
  • Dr. Crab's lab: The lab is equipped with digital medical records, to monitor the animals' health, as well as a security camera in the visitor's corridor. He gave permission for the police to take the security footage, and gave a statement about the argument between Shipley and Buckler. According to Crab, the argument took place in the Aqua Tunnel, the night before the murder, although he isn't sure what it was about.

Dr. Crab has to leave, but asks that you bring Rifle (who's escaped again) to him. The penguin is in the Aqua Tunnel, and you move there right away.

Shipshape Aquarium - Aqua Tunnel[edit]

DePlume is waiting in the tunnel, unhappy to see the attorneys. Talk to DePlume:

  • Last year's scoop: DePlume has been looking into the incident with Orla's old trainer for the last year. She says it's at the request of an acquaintance of the victim, but won't say who it is. DePlume thinks there's some kind of coverup, and reveals that Shipley's death occured exactly a year after the trainer's.
  • Today's trial: DePlume claims that Orla's song is barbaric, and sings it for you. But something's not right... DePlume's song is different from the Swashbuckler Spectacular! Athena sings the song from earlier, but DePlume refuses to believe Athena's song is the song from the Swashbuckler Spectacular, and demands evidence.

Present the Swashbuckler Video. DePlume has never heard that version of the song, and says her version was the song she heard a year ago. The Swashbuckler Video is updated in the court record. DePlume also mentions wanting to investigate the Center for Dangerous Animal Control. That sounds ominous...

  • Dangerous Animal Control: This organization keeps track of dangerous animals, and recommended that Orla be put down after the incident last year. Shipley refused, and DePlume believes he was paying the Center off to keep Orla safe. DePlume also doesn't trust Dr. Crab, who she knows little about.

Rifle is nowhere to be seen, so Phoenix suggests planning your next move at the office. Move to the Wright Anything Agency.

Wright Anything Agency (2)[edit]

Pearl is at the office, watching Trucy's magic tricks. Talk to Apollo:

  • The investigation: Trucy suggests that Phoenix take his forensics kit (luminol and fingerprint powder) to the crime scene. Athena and Pearl are fired up to investigate, and run ahead to the orca pool to do some science.

Shipshape Aquarium - Orca Pool (2)[edit]

As you arrive, Detective Fulbright is finishing his investigation, and is about to move to the show stage and talk to Rimes, who apparently helped clean. The detective exits, leaving the crime scene ready to be examined. Press examine and change the perspective to the right. Examine the platform to be hoisted down to the bottom of the pool. Examine the chest on the right, then Orla.

DD Skull Rock.png
DD Pool Bottom Photo.png

Pearl begs to start "forensicking", starting with the luminol. Once the pink glasses are on, spray the skull rock, and a large bloodstain will appear. The victim must have struck his head on this rock when he fell! The skull rock is added to the Court Record. Next, spray Orla. Small bloodstains will appear on her, too. Athena snaps a picture of the pool bottom, and Pearl marks the luminol reactions. The Pool Bottom photo is added to the Court Record.

Suddenly, Orla cries out and begins to sink. Athena rushes to fetch Dr. Crab, who orders you to get the orca stretcher. Press the examine button and examine the pirate flag. Next, you need to lower the platform to Orla. Change the perspective to the right and examine the orange panel in the middle of the back wall.

Dr. Crab finds something in Orla's stomach, and soon the whale is resting easy. Pearl blames herself for spraying Orla with luminol, but Crab says something else caused Orla's condition and refuses to say what. He leaves to fetch extra help.

DD Mysterious Capsule.png

Now's your chance to find out what's really wrong with Orla. Press examine and examine Orla, zooming you in on her. Examine the sheet to her right. Mixed in with a bunch of fish is a medicine capsule, labelled "3 Zs". The mysterious capsule is added to the Court Record. Phoenix decides against showing it to the doctor, who's acting suspicious. Aquarium staff return Orla to the pool and begin filling it up again, so there's nothing left to do here. Move to the show stage.

Shipshape Aquarium - Show Stage[edit]

Rimes is at the stage, and gives you free rein to investigate. Talk to Rimes:

  • Helping with cleaning: While Buckler was cleaning the stage, Rimes fed Orla a snack and put her on the transport stretcher. The stretcher can be moved between the stage and the orca pool room, but can only be operated from the pool room.
  • About the murder: Rimes thinks Buckler is innocent, but isn't so sure about Orla. According to him, Orla attacked Buckler a few days ago! Athena thinks the "attack" was just the lifesaver trick, but Rimes isn't so sure.
DD Handmade Sign.png

Press the examine button. First, examine the crane in the top right corner. Examine the pool. Rimes says that the orca pool is used for practicing the show, which is performed in the stage pool. Next, examine the ship, then examine the sign in the bottom right corner. Buckler painted the sign, and there's a familiar skull rock on it. Rimes reveals the rock is part of the new stage show, so what's it doing in the orca pool? The skull rock is updated in the Court Record. The handmade sign is added to the Court record.

Talk to Rimes again:

  • The new show: Rimes accidentally mentions that Buckler was mad at the captain because of rumors that she wouldn't be in the new show. The Swashbuckler flyer is updated in the Court Record.

Pearl interrupts and tells you that she found some strange fingerprints, but before you can look at them, Prosecutor Blackquill appears, accompanied by Detective Fulbright. Blackquill demands that Rimes testify against Buckler, but if Rimes is at the courthouse, there won't be anyone to feed Orla, since the other keepers are scared of her. Pearl offers to take care of the whale and work the telecast, so Rimes loans her his video phone.

Once Blackquill leaves, you can get back to investigating the fingerprints. Talk to Pearl:

DD Ladder Prints.png
  • Peculiar prints: Pearl says she found fingerprints on the ladder. The prints are on the left side of the ladder, but they're right-handed, so Pearl thinks whoever touched the ladder must have gripped it from above. She also says the prints belong to Marlon Rimes. The ladder prints are added to the Court Record.

Just then, Rifle the penguin appears, and Pearl leaves to talk to the aquarium staff about Orla. You still have that mystery capsule to investigate, and you move to the Wright Anything Agency to give it to Apollo.

Wright Anything Agency (3)[edit]

Talk to Apollo:

  • The investigation: Apollo wants to help, but Phoenix doesn't have anything for him to do. Athena suggests showing him a certain piece of evidence.

Present the mysterious capsule. Apollo takes it to a hospital to have it analyzed. Athena thinks Buckler might be out of questioning by now, and you move to the detention center.

Note: If you're playing the AJ:AA Trilogy version, this is your last opportunity to present Apollo with the whistle and fish for the A Man of Many Hats achievement. Once you present the mysterious capsule, Apollo will be unavailable to talk to for the rest of the case.

Detention Center[edit]

Buckler is surprised that you're willing to defend her (apparently Blackquill had said you would abandon her). Talk to Buckler:

  • About the murder: Buckler and Shipley were supposed to start cleaning together at 4, but Buckler went in an hour early to avoid the captain, because of their fight. It turns out that Shipley never showed up at the orca pool that morning.
  • Orla: Buckler is happy to see Orla free, even though it got herself arrested. Buckler explains the lifesaver trick: the dummy emits sound waves, and, when Orla hears the whistle, she follows the sound waves to the dummy. Only a trainer would know how to use the whistle, and Orla can only perform one trick at a time. The whistle is updated in the Court Record. If Orla can only do one trick at a time, how did DePlume hear her singing while she was doing the lifesaver trick?

Athena reminds you that you have a few things to return to Buckler. First, present the calendar. Buckler claims the calendar isn't her's, and didn't know anyone else used that type of calendar. The calendar is updated in the Court Record.

Next, present the prescription bag. Apparently Buckler takes the medicine for a heart condition. She mentions the fight with Shipley. Talk to Buckler again:

  • Reason for the fight: Buckler says the captain wouldn't put her in the show because of her heart condition. She was upset when she was cleaning, and Orla did her volleyball spike trick to try to cheer Buckler up, and broke off one of the octopus's legs. But Buckler was determined to be in the show, because it was the anniversary of the death of the previous trainer, Azura Summers, and explain that her death was an accident. Buckler moved the skull rock into the water, so the new show couldn't be performed and the aquarium would have to perform the old show. The skull rock is updated in the Court Record. Since the rock was moved while Buckler was cleaning, that makes whoever met with the captain after 6 AM suspicious.
  • Azura Summers: Summers taught Buckler how to command Orla, and shows a keepsake charm from her. Buckler swore on the charm to become a great trainer, and reveals Summers's boyfriend had a matching one, although Buckler never met him. The captain also had a keepsake from her: her walkie-talkie. But wait, was there a walkie-talkie on Shipley's body?

Present the photo of the body. There's no walkie-talkie in the photo, but Buckler remembers talking to the captain over it before cleaning. Shipley's autopsy report is updated in the Court Record. Buckler mentions that Orla had left tooth marks in Summers's walkie-talkie. With Summers and Shipley both gone, only Buckler can protect Orla from the ship's doctor.

Talk to Buckler one more time:

  • The ship's doctor: Ever since Summers's death, Dr. Crab has been trying to euthanize Orla, even though he was strongly against euthanization before. The doctor always has poison on him, and was ready to put her down after the trial. It looks like you should look into Dr. Crab a little more. You move to the Pub O'Danger.

Shipshape Aquarium - Pub O'Danger (2)[edit]

Pearl is at the pub, with Rifle the penguin... who you forgot to bring to Dr. Crab. Rifle starts attacking Crab for stealing her chick, Sniper. Rifle throws up food for Sniper, but Crab observes that the mama penguin seems to be in a bad mood. Talk to Crab:

  • Rifle's condition: Pearl flips Rifle over for examination, and discovers that the bottom of Rifle's feet are pink. Athena worries it's a disease, but Crab thinks it's something she stepped in. He retrieves something from her stomach... a familiar-looking charm. Athena asks to see it, but Crab is too busy with his machine, a monitoring system.
DD Charm.png
  • The charm: Phoenix recognizes the charm... it's the same one Buckler had! Crab is upset, and claims the charm is Summers's, but Buckler has Summers's charm at the detention center, right? This charm must belong to Summers's boyfriend, and Crab admits it. The charm is added to the Court Record. Crab says he was there a year ago when Summers died, and blames Orla for her death.
  • Monitoring system: The system Crab uses lets him monitor the electronic medical records for each animal, or so he claims. Phoenix has never heard of such a system, and Crab admits he has a point. Two familiar-looking locks appear: Psyche-Locks!

Present the Magatama.

Crab claims the monitoring system is made up of electronic records and security cameras to track them at all hours, but Phoenix doesn't believe him. Present the security footage. Since the security footage doesn't start until 10, Crab couldn't be monitoring the animals 24/7 with cameras.

1 Psyche-Lock Broken It may not be 24/7, but Crab still claims he can attend to any animal, anywhere, at any time. But there's somewhere in the aquarium he can't visit. Present the security card. Only Shipley and Buckler can enter the orca pool room, so Crab can't enter whenever he needs to.

1 Psyche-Lock Broken

Unlock Successful

According to Crab, security is tighter now than it was a year ago, and Buckler wouldn't allow Crab to get a security card. Talk to Crab again:

DD TORPEDO Data.png
  • Monitoring system: Crab reveals his machine is a system of ecological data organization, called the TORPEDO. It collects data about the aquarium's animals through sensors on the animals. Smaller animals like Rifle have their sensor attached to their bodies, but larger animals like Orla have sensors equipped on their tanks instead, and there aren't sensors in non-habitats, like the stage. The machine reveals that Rifle swallowed the charm on the day of the murder, July 20th, at 4:00 AM. Buckler was cleaning the orca pool at that time, wasn't she? Crab looks at Orla's data next. It appears that she didn't eat anything from the 19th until yesterday afternoon, but has eaten normally since. The TORPEDO data is added to the Court Record. Crab still seems reluctant to talk about the TORPEDO, however.
  • Why hide the TORPEDO?: Crab hid the TORPEDO system because it isn't legal in the country yet. Shipley knew and allowed it, but the other staff didn't.

Just then, Crab gets a call, asking him to come into somewhere and explain himself. He looks for his calendar, but can't find it. He tells the person on the phone that he will euthanize Orla if he must. Talk to Crab again:

  • Euthanasia: Crab reveals the Center for Dangerous Animal Control had just called him. If Orla attacks anyone again, the Center demands she be put down. He shows the pill he'll use to euthanize her, which looks strangely familar.

Present the calendar. Dr. Crab recognizes it immediately; it's his calendar! He says that Summers designed it, but died before it went on sale. He denies being romantically involved with Summers, and says that Shipley never showed up for the meeting on the calendar. The calendar is updated in the Court Record.

Phoenix asks about the rumored bribe to the Center for Dangerous Animal Control, and believes the aquarium is hiding a secret. Five Psyche-Locks appear around Crab, but before you can crack them, Detective Fulbright appears and drags Crab away to questioning. With no one left to talk to, Athena reorganizes the evidence.

Suddenly, Apollo calls on Phoenix's cell phone. He reports the mysterious capsule is a sleeping drug, and the aquarium had recently bought a lot of the drug. The mysterious capsule is updated in the Court Record. He also reports that Summers had been on the same medicine as Buckler, for a heart condition. It'll be up to Phoenix and Athena to expose the aquarium's secrets and save both Orla and Buckler in court tomorrow!
