Before the dungeon

Dwarven Hollows

Complete Bestiary
If you want to complete the Bestiary List, then be sure to hunt all five sea-based enemies as you can travel the seas only for a limited time

Obeying the last words of Desh, you travel to the island of the Dwarves looking for clues about the Fire Crystal. Go sailing west from the whirlpool strait to a isle with two caves and enter the southern one. There, you discover that Guzco, a rogue, prevents the access to the Molten Cave where the crystal is located. He fled to Underground Lake, but Dwarves can't swim, so only humans like you can follow him.

You also learn about a remote village named Gysahl, so it can be a good idea to visit it before the next dungeon.

In the table below, the items in italics and shaded in grey need not to be purchased because they can be found for free.

Gysahl

In the remote Gysahl life goes on peacufully. You can buy here some unique items, though. In the table below, the items in brackets need not to be purchased because they can be found for free.

Magic shop Price Item shops Price
Toad 700/1000 Magic Key 100
Mini 700/1000 Gysahl Greens 150
Blizzaga (NES) 3000
Break 3000

Silence 3000

In the southeastern part of the village there are three treasures (two Magic Keys and a Gysahl Green). Enter the house east of the spell shop and search two pots (two Gysahl Greens). Go north to a shop which sell Magic Keys. Go through a secret passage right behind the counter with a chest (Shuriken).

In the Inn is a old man hidden away righ from the door through a secret passage. Talk with him to view the Bestiary and Achievements (in the NES version, it asked you to write a feedback mail to Square Soft). Once you're done with your shopping you can go back to the Dwarven Hollows.

Across the sea, just in front of Gysahl to the west, you can re-visit the Healing Copse.

Chocobo Forest

There's a chocobo forest on the mainland south of the Dwarven Hollows: use a Gysahl Green ("carrot" in the NES) there to summon the Fat Chocobo and give it custody of all your surplus items.

Subterranean Lake

Go downstairs west of the Shrine to a small lake. You need to turn yourself in Toads again to advance (what Refia hates).

Turn yourself back and continue over two bridges east past a chest (Gold Needle) to next level. Go over the bridge past another chest (Zeus's Wrath) over a second bridge. Before the third bridge are two chests (Gold Needle and Zeus's Wrath) and there is one more chest (Gold Needle) after the bridge before going up to next level. On the way to the boss are two chests (6000 Gil).

BOSS: Gutsco

Level 17 HP: 3500 Weakness: - Gil: 3500 Exp: 2304
NES version

Start with the same party as before against Medusa. Gutsco should be easier than Medusa. Start casting the highest level spells, then continue with lower levels after you used up the most powerful ones.

After the Battle you will receive a Horn of Ice. Go back in Dwarven Hollows and talk with the Dwarf chief. He will dissolve the barrier to the shrine, where you can put back the horn. Do so and the shadow that followed you here will reveal himself as Gutsco and he will steal both horns and escape.

Follow him to the Molten Cave north of Dwarven Hollows.

Molten Cave

Molten cave

Since the monsters and boss are of fire element, it would be good to equip Ice armor set, that can only be purchased in Darven Hollows.

Upon entering you'll notice the Fire Barrier that was here before are now gone due to Gutsco's invasion. Follow the path west from the first crossing to a chest (Antarctic Wind). Come back to the crossing and walk in the lava, although it will hurt you every second. Go east first for another chest (Antarctic Wind), then go west to next etage.

Go in the lava and south all the way for another chest (Freezing Blade). Go back and go west and go north and south for two more chests (Hi-Potion and Phoenix Down) before going west again to next floor.

Continue following the path past a chest (Impact Claws) to a room with another chest (Phoenix Down) and a switch. Check the rock to reveal a secret passage. Go in and go upstairs in the Crystals Room.

BOSS: Salamander

Level 19 HP: 5700 Weakness: Ice, Water Gil: 3700 Exp: 2744
NES version

Salamander is weak against Ice, therefore:

  • have the Warrior use the Freezing Blade;
  • have the Black Mage and Red Mage cast Blizzard, Blizzara and Blizzaga;
  • have the White Mage use the Ice Staff from the item menu to cast Blizzard;
  • use any Arctic Wind and Antarctic Wind you have.

After your victory over Gutsco you will get Horns of Ice back, but not only that: you'll receive also the Fire Crystal which nets you four new jobs:

  • Knight
  • Ranger
  • Geomancer (DS) / Thief (NES)
  • Scholar

In the NES version, the Fire Crystal grants the Thief job instead of the Geomancer. The NES Geomancer job is obtained from the Water crystal instead.
