Murdaw's Keep

NOTE: This guide will be calling the Hero character by the name of "Rex" throughout this entire walkthrough. This is because his name was depicted as レック ("Rek") in a screenshot on the official Japanese website. Said website was on the DS version, and the Hero names listed on their screenshots of Dragon Quest IV and Dragon Quest V were "Solo" and "Abel" respectively. These are the canon names for the heroes of both of those games, so it follows that the name listed for the DQ6 Hero would also have a certain level of canonicity behind it.

That said, "Rex" is a name that works far more naturally in English, while still being almost the same. With that said...

The Prologue

File:Dragon Quest VI - Talk to Milly.png
Talk to Milly to fly to Murdaw's Keep

The story begins with the Hero, Rex, laying down on the ground before being awoken by his companion, Milly. As she does so, Carver, the man on the left, jumps down and says that the road ahead is clear. It is high time to take down Murdaw, and restore peace to the world.

You then control Rex. Walk up to the next screen, talk to Milly, and you will activate a several minute long cinematic of her summoning a dragon in order to fly your group into Murdaw's Keep. Once that happens, you will have just one linear path ahead of you; take it to just outside Murdaw's throne room, and that's that! You just went through Murdaw's entire castle without a fight!

But as the party goes through the door, they find a nasty surprise; Murdaw is far more powerful than they ever thought possible! He chastises them for their naivety, lifts them into the air, and flings them into another dimension before they can even move! And on that note, the screen fades to black, and then...

Rex's sister wakes him up

Nothing. It was all just a dream; Rex was tucked safely in his bed the whole time! He's no hero; he's simply another young lad who lives in the town of Weaver's Peak! Upon this revelation, Rex's sister tells him that the town mayor is looking fo him, and the cutscene ends.

The first thing you'll want to do is check the right drawer, as well as the group of barrels on the left side of the house. Do this to receive 10 Gold, an Agility Seed, and a Leather Hat (go into the menus and equip this immediately; it will increase your Defense).

Now, a note on the Agility Seed, and other seeds like it. You will find many seeds like the Agility Seed on your journey through the Realms of Revelation. If you use them as an item, they will boost one of your stats by a semi-random amount; but once you use one, it will be gone forever. Therefore, you will want to know how to use them properly, because Rex is not the only hero we are going to be controlling by the time we reach the end of this game. This guide will go into more detail as it becomes relevant, but for now, you will want to follow these general guidelines...

Stat Seed Recommendations

About the Seeds of Life and Resilience: There are going to be other characters who are going to join us on our quest. One of them has a very hard time surviving against one of the early bosses in this game, and one of the other ones have a signature move called "Forebearance". This technique makes him absorb every attack launched by your enemies for one round of combat; if an enemy intended to hit all of your party members once, Forebearance makes it so that said party member takes all four of those attacks instead. With enough Seeds of Life and Resilience, he helps trivialize many of the enemies you will fight, including several bosses.

For now however, we do not have either of those two characters, and Rex is all alone. Therefore, Rex will want just one Seed of Life and one Seed of Resilience to make the early game easier; anything more than that would be excessive.

About the Seeds of Magic: Rex's MP is not as naturally high as some of the other magically oriented characters, and he will be getting access to some very useful techniques. Giving him all of the Seeds of Magic will help him to be able to use these attacks more often.

About the Seeds of Strength and Wisdom: All of these are better saved for a future character.

About the Seeds of Agility and the Pretty Betsies: The Agility and Style stats are useful only in large amounts; you need to use a large amount of them on one character in order for them to make a difference. For now, it is best to sell some of them for cash; otherwise, Rex may not have enough money to buy some of the equipment that he will want to have in this section of the game.
