To unlock this world, you must beat the boss of World 2-Castle as [[New Super Mario Bros./Game Elements#Power-Ups|Mini Mario]]. In these levels, do not fall in the water as it is poisonous.
World 4 is one of two possible worlds that come after World 2, as well as one of the two secret worlds that require a special requirement to unlock. Compared to its counterpart, World 3, it has about the same amount of levels but less split paths, making the World seem overall longer. It also has much more Toad Houses, but most of them are locked behind Star Coin signs.

===Secret exits===
When you see purple and orange mushrooms, be careful as they bend on whatever side you are. Head right until you see the first Star Coin. Wall-Jump to it (or use the blocks). For the second Star Coin, let the mushroom bend so that you can grab it and then jump quickly to the flat green mushroom. For the third Star Coin, go to the area with one glossy block and five coins a bit beneath it. Hit the block from underneath and then climb the vine. Climb the clouds and hit the block from underneath. Climb the new vine and jump for the third Star Coin. Then head down the green warp pipe and finish the level.

=== World 4-3 ===
====World 4-1====
Head down the green warp pipe to start this underwater level. Beware of the big eels. For the first, stay near the bottom of the level. Quickly go grab the first Star Coin before an eel gets in the way and then stay near the top. Then move down to avoid the next one. Grab the second Star Coin when you see it and then continue. For the third Star Coin, wait as long as you can to hit the switch. Then hurry to the green warp pipe located after the second yellow pipe (it is right next to it). Grab the third Star Coin and leave by the green warp pipe. Head to the top and continue. Head up the green warp pipe at the end and finish the level.
During the Dorrie ride, wait until you approach the third set of brick blocks, which also happens to be the longest. Get on the brick blocks and stand in the middle. Jump directly up to cause a vine to pop out, which leads to a platform with a pipe in the canopy of the jungle. When you emerge, jump on to the hills and try to leap over the trio of Scuttlebugs to reach the top of the red flagpole.

=== World 4-Tower ===
This secret exit lets you bypass two levels to get to World 4-Tower, granting access to a green Toad House along the way.
In this level, you must hurry to avoid rising lava. Again, press the up arrow to grab a grid and jumping still works. Climb up and go through the door. Hit a switch (with Dash) as early as you can to go in the background while on grids. Keep to the left and you will see the first Star Coin. Grab it, then hit a switch to return to the forefront. Keep as much to the right as you can to grab the second Star Coin, then go left and up. When you get back to the grids, go right to grab the third Star Coin. Keep going up to reach the double doors and Bowser Jr. To defeat him, throw his shells back to him three times.

=== World 4-A ===
====World 4-Ghost====
To cross the waters, stand on the rotating platforms. Depending on what side you're on, they will turn that way. Head right and jump when you see the first Star Coin to grab it. At the next water, jump onto the Green Paratroopa to reach the vine. Swing yourself to the right and go through the green warp pipe. Here you will find the second Star Coin. Leave through the warp pipe on the right. Head right, but be careful of the Piranha Plants. Head down the left green warp pipe in the pipe trio. Wall-jump to grab the third Star Coin and come back out through the third pipe. Finish the level by going through the pipe at the end.
You'll need a Mini Mushroom to get to this secret exit. After hitting the second red switch, head on to the pipe with red blocks beside its exit. Instead of heading through and progressing as normal, hop on the top of the warp pipe. Wall jump off the pipe and to the right, where there is a ledge that is otherwise inaccessible without the floaty jumps of Mini Mario/Luigi. Jump up and into the gap above. You will emerge in another room. Ignore the door first and keep using Mini Mario's wall jumps to get the last Star Coin. Fall back down and go through the door to be taken to the red flag.

=== World 4-4 ===
This hidden exit leads to the World 4 Cannon, which blast you far above the canopy and into the cloudy World 7.
On this next level, no you're not crazy. Caterpillars cannot be killed by being jumped on or hit with fireballs. Head right and fall into the <nowiki>"cave"</nowiki> to reach the first Star Coin. Come back out by wall-jumping. Continue and hit the blocks you see from underneath to reveal a vine. Climb it and go left. Jump up slightly to the left of the ?-Block to reveal another vine. Climb and jump for the second Star Coin. Continue to the right and rab the shell of a Koopa and carry it to the mini pipes. Drop it to the left to grab the third Star Coin. Finish the level by continuing over the green pipes and go through the yellow pipe.

Head right through the door. Hit the switch and jump onto one of the blocks. You will be pulled up with them. Head right and grab the first Star Coin, then stand on the disc to be carried over to the next section. Go up, hit the red switch and go through the door. Go to the left, hit the new red switch, and wall-jump up between the red walls to the second Star Coin. For the third Star Coin, you need to be Mini Mario (using a Mini Mushroom). Go back down on the left, hit the red switch again, and head right. Stand on the pipe, and wall-jump to the right to get on the platform. Head up by wall-jumping and grab the third Star Coin. For the alternate exit to World 4-Cannon, head through the door. Otherwise, go back down, hit the red switch once again, but this time go through the green warp pipe. Climb up on the left, go right, and then go through the door to reach the end of the level.

=== World 4-Cannon ===
Enter the cannon to be transported to World 7. This level is highly recommended since you avoid having to beat the boss of World 5-Castle as Mini Mario.

Secret exits[edit]

World 4-1[edit]

During the Dorrie ride, wait until you approach the third set of brick blocks, which also happens to be the longest. Get on the brick blocks and stand in the middle. Jump directly up to cause a vine to pop out, which leads to a platform with a pipe in the canopy of the jungle. When you emerge, jump on to the hills and try to leap over the trio of Scuttlebugs to reach the top of the red flagpole.

This secret exit lets you bypass two levels to get to World 4-Tower, granting access to a green Toad House along the way.

World 4-Ghost[edit]

This hidden exit leads to the World 4 Cannon, which blast you far above the canopy and into the cloudy World 7.
