Super Smash Bros. Melee is the sequel to the popular 1999 Nintendo 64 fighting game Super Smash Bros. Like the original, it features a cast of Nintendo characters (25) and a collection of Nintendo-themed arenas (29) for battle with up to four players. Its broad appeal and involved multiplayer mode, improved quality and added features make it a popular title to this day.

Controls

Note on Jumping

All characters can double jump by pressing File:X-button.png or File:Y-button.png twice or File:Control-up.png twice. After that, the File:Control-up.png+File:B-button.png attack usually works as a third jump.

Basic Gameplay

There are a few basic gameplay mechanics to understand in SSBM. They apply to all gametypes.

Movement

Theres not much to say about movement exept that speed is dependant on stick tilt. Which means, the more you tilt the control stick, the faster you go.

Jumping

Every character can jump twice just by pressing Template:Button, File:Y-button.png, or Template:Button twice in a row. You can hold Template:Button or Template:Button to affect direction. All characters exept Yoshi also have a 3rd jump thats in the form of the Template:Button+Template:Button attack.

Edge recovery

If you are close enough to a sharp edge on a stage while falling or jumping, you will automatically grab it. You can then press up , x, or y to jump up, A to climb up and attack, or down to fall. Only one character can hang from an edge at a time so a good strategy if an enemy is going to try and grab the edge, try to grab it first and they will fall.

Attacking

Attacks are all executed with the a and b buttons plug directions. Specific attacks are covered in the Character section.

Sheilds

Any attack can be blocked with a sheild which is used by pressing R or L. The sheild weakens with multiple attacks. It also weakens if you just leave it out. When it breaks, you will be stunned for a few seconds, which leaves you at a disadvantage. When you put the sheild away, it will slowly recharge to full potential.

When you press L or R down lightly you will notice that a very large shield pops up for a fraction of a second. this sheild reflects ranged attacks and counters normal attacks. when an attack is countered you can attack them before they recover. So by pressing L or R the instant their attack hits can reflect it or counter it.

Rolls and Dodging

If you hold down L or R and then press right or left while on the ground, then you will roll. While rolling, you are invincible to attacks and once you stop rolling your shield stays up. But, there is a small gap after you stop rolling and the sheild comes back on so you can be attacked then.

Dodging is preformed by press R or L and smash the direction down. You will then preform a little sidestep. It will dodge all attacks and doesn't use your sheild but there is a recovery time and you have to time it right. Air dodging is preformed in the air by pressing R and a direction. You fly in the direction for a bit and flash. It has the same effect as ground dodging. However, after dodging, you can no longer jump, so don't dodge off the stage. You can also air dodge from the gruond by pressing L/R + Up.

Grabbing/Throwing

Grabbing/Throwing is the only type of attack that sheilds can't block. You grab someone by pressing L/R +A or just Z. Once you grab them, you will hold them for about 2 seconds. The time gets shorter if the opponent moves the control a lot. You can punch them while holding them by pressing A. To throw them, Press Z again plus a direction. you will then throw them in that direction. If you use the down throw, they will bounce back up. The higher their damage, the farther you will throw them.

Special Note on Samus, Link, and young link: These characters have a grappling hook/beam so they can grab opponents from afar. However, if you miss, they have a longer recovery time. Link can smack opponents with his hook by pressing Z in the air. All three of the characters can grab the stage by pressing Z in midair. You can press Z again to recieve a small boost jump up.

Special Note on Donkey Kong: Normally you can't move while grabbing someone. Donkey can carry someone on his back and move around before throwing someone.

Advanced Techniques

These techniques provide a good advantage but are really hard to learn/master.

Wavedashing

Probably the most used technique, this is a way to move around a stage really fast. To preform it, press X or Y to jump. IMMEDIATLY, before the character jump animation starts, press L/R + downleft/downright. If you do it right, you will move a short distance left or right and left a trail of smoke behind you. This works because when you do an air dodge into the ground, you will slide a bit. So, if you do it immediatly, you will slide a lot. Good wavedashers can do this repeatedly and get around stages extremely fast.

L Canceling

Normally, when you are knocked to the ground, there is a recovery time where you can press A or up to get up. But, if you press the L button exactly when you hit the ground, you always land on your feet.

Also, in case of Link's A+down air attack, if you L cancel it, the "take sword out of ground" animation runs double speed, so you recover faster.

Items

Items appear regularly in SSBM. they either drop out of the sky or appear in containers. They eitheir help you or are a weapon. The items that appear and the frequency that they do can be adjusted in melee battles through the Item Switch, which has to be unlocked first.

Basic Information

All item's basic functions are preformed with the A button. Items meant to be thrown are thrown with the A button. Any other item can be thrown in a direction by pressing Z and smashing the direction. Just pressing Z will toss the item behind you. Tossed items can also be caught to negate damage. If you press A the instant the item hits you, you will catch it.

Containers

  • Crate

A brown crate with the SSBM logo on it. When you pick it up, it makes you go really slow and prevents you from jumping. To open it, pick it up and throw it or attack it. 10%{?) of the time, the crate is explosive, so be careful when attacking them from close range. They usually contain 1-5 random items.

  • Capsule

A little pill shaped pink and white container. Usually contains one item, or is explosive. It does not hinder your movement, so it is eaiser to throw at someone.

  • Party Ball

  • Egg

The things that the pokemon chancey throws around. They are exactly the same as a capsule, exept they look like eggs.

Shooting Items

All projectile weapons are fired with A. they usually run out of ammo, which then you can just throw them at someone.

  • Ray Gun

A laser gun that shoots fairly fast projectiles that have good knock back. Has 16 shots of ammo.

  • Super Scope

An old NES accessory adapted as a weapon. has two firing modes. if you keep pressing A, it will shoot out a stream of little energy balls that trap opponents in them. the balls do 1 damage each. If you hold down A, you can charge up a big, fast moving ball that instantly KO's an opponent. But, you cannot move or change direction while charging, nor can you hold the charge.

  • Fire Flower

Use as a low power flamethrower. Severely weakened from SSB, it has a really limited range and low damage and ammo. Better to use this one to throw at people, because it does fire damage that way.

Battering Items

In other words, melee items. These are used by hitting A.

  • Beam Sword

A lightsaber like weapon. Super long range for melee and really good smash attack.

  • Homerun Bat

A unique weapon that has an instant KO feature. normally, it behaves like a less powerful beam sword. The sideways smash attack, however, is a short range instant KO attack. Just get in range(the range is deciving so get as close as you can) and smash A them. The bat will flash different colors and there will be a loud Ping! and they will fly off the stage.

  • Fan

An underated weapon that has a really fast attack and high penetration. Does 1% damage per whack but builds up quickly. Also extremely effective against sheilds. A good use for this is that when you throw it at someone, they get knocked straight up pretty high even at low damage so its good for starting juggles.

  • Hammer

A unique item. When you pick it up, you immediatly start swingit it around. You then can move around and jump only once to whack people. When you whack people, it does a lot of damage and usually KO's in 2 hits. But, you can't drop the hammer nor are you defended against ranged attacks. Additionally, you can only jump once.

There is also a 10% chance that the hammer head will fall of, making it useless. You will then just swing the stick around for ten seconds, while still not being able to jump. The Hammer Head becomes an item and is a really high damage throwing item that usually KO's.

  • Star Rod

A pink baton with a star on the end. Seriously. It does normal melee damage, but if you smash it, it turns into a projectile weapon and shoots little stars out which go straight until they hit something. You can shoot about 20 stars before it becomes just melee.

  • Lip's Stick

A really wierd item that, when you whack someone with it, a little flower appears on their head. The flower does continual damage to them for about 5 seconds, then the flower falls off. You can make the flower bigger by whacking them repeatedly or using the A smash. The bigger flower, the more continual damage it does.

  • Parasol

An item that you can whack people with. It also opens when you are jumping, allowing you to fall very slowly and move alot horizontally.

Performance Items

These items don't do damage directly but change your character's properties like weight or visibility.

  • Invisibility

This makes you invisible. Of course, it makes you invisible to yourself to so sometimes its a disadvantage. Also, whenever you get hit, you become momentarily visible.

  • Invincibility(StarMan)

The starman from mario games. If you touch it, you get 10 seconds of invincibility.

  • Metal Box

This makes you super heavy and shiny. As a result, you are harder to knock off the stage, but you don't jump as high either.

  • Screw Attack

I guess this is considered a transformation item(?). When you hold it, your jumps turn into screw attack jumps, just like samus. When you throw it at someone, it makes them do the screww attack jump. A useful strategy is to throw this at them while they are trying to recover because once they get hit with this, they can't jump any more.

  • Bunny Hood

Makes you super fast and you jump really high. Lasts for 10 seconds(?).

  • Super Mushroom

The mushroom from the mario games. If you touch it, it makes you super big and heavy.

  • Poison Muchroom

Looks almost exactly like the super muchroom exept for slightly darker coloring. It makes you really small and light.

Recovery Items

These items recover heatlth.

  • Food

Random little peices of food from the kirby games that recover 5% each.

  • Maxim Tomato

A large red tomato with an M on it. Recovers 50%.

  • Heart Container

The heart from the zelda games. Recovers 100%.

Other Items

These don't really fit into the other categories.

  • Motion Sensor Bomb

Throw it somewhere on the stage and it sticks. After half a second it will become a proximity motion bomb, blowing up if somthing walks over it or it is attacked.

  • Warp Star

From the kirby games. Its a big yellow star. If you pick it up, you'll get on it an you will fly way up. Then you come crashing down and you do area damage where you come down. If you land directly on someone, its always a KO. You can adjust where you come down by holding left or right while youre in the air.

Mario

Mario has been at the forefront of Nintendo for a long time. Mario was originally known as Jumpman in the original Donkey Kong arcade game. Since then Donkey Kong has become a hero and Bowser has taken his place as Mario's archnemesis. Mario set the standard for 2D platformers, and, with Super Mario 64, the standard for 3D platformers.

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Fireball
    • A projectile that bounces along the ground and off its surroundings
  • B+Left/Right: Cape
    • Reflects projectiles and reverses enemies
  • B+Up: Super Jump Punch
    • Pummels opponents in a shower of coins. Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Mario Tornado
    • Spins opponents around and tosses them into the air. Rapidly tapping B will cause Mario to rise slightly.

Bowser

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Fire Break
    • Breathes fire. The longer you hold it down, the shorter the flame gets.
  • B+Left/Right: Koopa Klaw
    • Slices someone in the imidiate vicinity. If you hit somebody you pick them up and you can hit B to whack them with your forehead.
  • B+Up: Whirling Fortress
    • You go into your shell and spin around.
    • If used on the ground, press left/right to move back and forth.
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Bowser Bomb
    • A butt stomp move. If used on the ground you will jump up first.

Pokemon #25! A yellow animal/thing with lightning attacks. Appears wherever Pokemon stuff are sold.

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Thunder Jolt
    • A little bouncing lightning bolt. bounces about half the stage or until it hits somthing. It can also go up vertical walls like the wing in Corneria.
    • If you attack in the air, it becomes a little ball of lightning that goes down at a 45 degree angle until it hits ground where it starts behaving normally.
  • B+Left/Right: Skull Bash
    • Chargable headbutt type attack.
  • B+Up: Quick Attack
    • A right angle type jump that you control the direction with the control stick.
    • If you press the opposite direction just after jump the first direction, you can jump the other direction too.
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Thunder
    • Summons a lightning bolt above your head. Goes straight down until it hits somthing or hits a platform on the stage.

Peach

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Toad
    • Pull out Toad to use him as a sheild. I think it blocks all attacks for a while.
  • B+Left/Right: Peach Bomber
    • A really wierd side attack where you bump into them and they explode. Actually a pretty decent attack, but still really wierd.
  • B+Up: Peach Parasol
    • A clone of the Parasol Item. Makes it so you float more in the air. The initial attack gives you a height boost.
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Vegetable
    • Pull out a random radish ala Super Mario 2. The happier the expression, the more damage you do when you throw it like a normal item(press A). Sometimes, you will pull out a regular item like a bombomb or something like that. Very rarely, you will pull out a dead radish which is an instant KO item.

At any time, hold the X/Y Button to float horizontally for a short time.

Yoshi

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Egg Lay
    • Press B to lash out your tongue a short distance. If you snag someone, you turn them into an egg. The will be trapped in it for a few seconds, So take advantage of the time to use the Yoshi Bomb against them a few times.
  • B+Left/Right: Egg Roll
    • You turn into a sparkling egg for about 6 seconds and roll around. If you hit someone, they fly up. A good attack for juggling, but be careful not go carreen of an edge.
  • B+Up: Egg Throw
    • Throw an egg at an enemy. Aim with the control stick. Tilt control distance. A good anoyance attack.
  • B+Down: Yoshi Bomb
    • A butt stomp attack. If you don't hit anyone directly, the little stars that pop out do a bit of damage.

Yoshi cannot use B+Up as a third jump, but his second jump is a flutter jump and is quite large.

Captain Falcon

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Falcon Punch
    • A really powerful attack that takes a a long time to build up. Good to use on a team battle if you teammate is holding them.
  • B+Left/Right: Raptor Boost
    • A extended punch where you run a while with a flaming fist. If you don't hit anyone, you trip and fall and the recovery time is fairly long.
  • B+Up: Falcon Dive
    • Jump up a bit and flash. If you touch someone while jumping, you latch on to them and propel yourself up and to the left/right a bit more and they explode.
    • This attack can actually attack through kirby's rock attack without damaging you.
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Falcon Kick
    • A jumping kick(?)

Donkey Kong

Games:

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Giant Punch
    • A chargable punch. hold B to charge it. If it is charged a little glowly light will be on your fist.
  • B+Left/Right: Headbutt
    • Slams someone into the ground. A little dirt clod will appear and they will be stuck in it for a while.
  • B+Up: Spinning Kong
    • Spin a round with arms out. Covers a pretty good horizontal distance.
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Hand Slap
    • Repeatedly slap the ground in front of you. Keep pressing B to keep it going. It also attacks a little bit behind too.
    • The attack you want to use if you want to beat the 15 minute melee.

Donkey Kong has the ability to carry his opponents on his back after grabbing them.

Fox McCloud

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Blaster
    • A peashooter blaster with fast fire. It doesn't even stop someone from moving forward. Just use as they are approaching you because the 1% damage each shot does can add up.
  • B+Left/Right: Fox Illusion
    • A really quick dash in the direction you specify. You basically run through your opponent.
  • B+Up: Fire Fox
    • You start flaming and then charge in the direction you specify.
    • While Fox is charging, the attack can be aimed in any direction.
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Reflector
    • Reflects all thrown items and projectiles. Also does damage in the immidiate vicinity(?).

Ness

B Button Special Attacks:

  • Template:Button: PK Flash
  • Template:Button+Template:Button/Template:Button: PK Fire
    • Useful attack that shoots a little red ball horizontally. If the ball touches an opponent, the opponent will burst into flame and by stuck there for about 2 seconds. In this time you can swing at them with the bat and they still won't move.
  • Template:Button+Template:Button: PK Thunder
    • A little ball of lightning you can control around the stage for about 5 seconds.
    • When using this attack in the air, Ness will float in the air.
    • If you guide the PK Thunder so that it hits Ness, Ness becomes a projectile and also this acts as his third jump.
  • Template:Button+Template:Button: PSI Magnet
    • Absorbs projectiles(not thrown items, just things like Samus' Charge shot or Fox's Blaster) and heals you the damage the projectile would have done.

Kirby

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Swallow
    • Swallow an opponent. You can walk around slowly with them in their mouth. They can get out by rapidly moving the Control Stick around. When you spit them out, you copy whatever their B button power is and it is assigned to this attack. To get rid of the copied attack, press the taunt button.
  • B+Left/Right: Hammer
    • Swing a hammer left or right.
    • If used in the air, you will spin it 360 degrees around.
  • B+Up: Final Cutter
    • Slice a sword up and come back down. When you land you send out a little shockwave that can do damage.
    • You can attack someone twice if you hit them on the way up.
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Stone
    • Turn into a heavy object and drop like a rock. It does damage on the way down
    • Provides temporary invincibility.
    • Press B anytime to get out of rock mode. Otherwise you pop out at around 3 seconds.

Ice Climbers

A special duo character. You controll the blue one and the pink one kind of follows. You always do the same attack. If the partner dies, you can still do your attacks, but their effect is weakened. B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Ice Shot
    • Both of you shoot little ice block things that slide along the ground till they hit something
    • The ice thing is very fragile and can be attacked and broken.
  • B+Left/Right: Squall Hammer
    • Swing little hammers around and twirl in a direction a bit
    • If theres only one of you, then you have only one direction of attack.
  • B+Up: Belay
    • If there are two of you, a little rope appears between the two of you and you both get catapulted up quite a bit.
    • If there is only one of you, then all this does is boost you a tiny bit up, so try to keep both of them alive
    • This does no damage in either mode.(?)
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Blizzard
    • You both breathe out a bit of ice in opposite directions. If you do it right, the opponent is frozen in one of those giant ice blocks for a bit.
    • Obviously, if theres only one of you, you only attack in the direction you are facing.

Samus

Samus Aran is a bounty hunter who frequently encounters Space Pirates and Metroids.

Games:

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Charge Shot
    • A chargable energy ball thing. Hold be to charge it. you can release it at any charge level. If it is fully charged you store it automatically and can let it off anytime
    • While charging, you can press left or right to roll left or right to avoid attacks. You then keep charging after the roll
    • If you get hit with a powerful attack, you lose the charge.
    • While charging, press R/L to save the charge at its current level.
  • B+Left/Right: Missile
    • press B and tilt left to send a fairly slow homing missle that doesn't go as far or do as much damage.
    • Smash the direction to send a faster, powerful non homing missle.
  • B+Up: Screw Attack
    • Spin around and move up. Anyone touching you while doing this is trapped in the attack,
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Bomb
    • Turn into the morph ball mode and drops the little bombs like in the metroid games. You can also bomb jump slightly.

samus has a special move where she can extend her grab move to 3 times the size perform by:

  • rotating the d-pad in a counter-clockwise direction
  • simultaneously tapping the 'z' button rapidly

if performed correctly when you use her grab move the grapple will be able to reach opponents much farther away.

  • hold the 'r' button to have the grapple home in on the enemy and press 'A' to grab

Link

Link likes to wear green, fight monsters, and save Princess Zelda.

Games:

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Bow
    • A chargable ice bow. The more you charge it the farther it goes. It is affected by gravity.
    • Hold B to charge the arrow.
  • B+Left/Right: Boomerang
    • A aimable boomerang. Press up or down to aim it slightly.
    • It can hit an opponent twice(Obviously).
  • B+Up: Spin Attack
    • Spin the sword around it a pretty powerful attack. Used on the gound, you stay in place. In the air, you rise up.
    • The final spin is the most powerful.
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Bomb
    • Pull out a bomb which becomes an item like a less powerful BombOmb. Explodes in your hand if you don't throw it.

Link's hookshot (grab/Z) can be used to grab onto walls when he's in the air.

L-Canceling the Down+B attack: If Link misses with the Down+B attack, his sword sticks in the stage and takes a relatively long time for link to pull it out. If you press L exactly when the tip of his sword touches the ground or platform, then the animation for pulling the sword out of the ground runs twice as fast, allowing you to recover more quickly.

Zelda/Sheik

Zelda likes to be kidnapped and be rescued by Link.

B Button Special Attacks: (As Zelda)

  • B Button: Nayru's Love
    • Zelda conjures a spinning field of jagged ice crystals to slice any adjacent enemies. This move can be performed in the air and on the ground. It hits repeatedly and has nearly no knockback.
    • This attack is useful for area denial, when Zelda is directly adjacent to one or more opponents. Use it to get Zelda out of trouble when she's in the fray.
  • B+Left/Right: Din's Fire
    • Zelda forms a glowing ball that accelerates away from her, disappears for a short instant, and explodes in a small fireball. The player can control the motion of the ball along the vertical axis, but its horizontal motion is strictly linear acceleration. The player must hold the B button until the ball reaches a desired position, at which point it explodes after a slight delay. It lights the opponent on fire, has a small radius of effect, and causes minimal knockback.
    • Use this attack to annoy unsuspecting foes at range. This requires a degree of anticipation, as the player must stop the ball about one and a half body widths in front of a moving opponent.
  • B+Up: Farore's Wind
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
    • The player can control Zelda's destination by pressing a direction while the animation executes.
    • This maneuver does not affect Zelda's fall trajectory when performed in the air, and removes the player's air control ability while the animation completes. Zelda also cannot teleport through solid objects. However, Zelda can often teleport completely across some playfields with this maneuver when the path is clear.
    • After teleporting, the player loses all control of Zelda except for her falling trajectory. Thus, she is completely vulnerable after telporting and falling.
    • The attack does no damage.
  • B+Down: Transform
    • Transform into Sheik

B Button Special Attacks: (As Sheik)

  • B Button: Needle Storm
  • B+Left/Right: Chain
  • B+Up: Vanish
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Transform
    • Transform into Zelda

Zelda has the more powerful attacks while Sheik is much more spry.

Hidden Characters

Many of the hidden characters have movesets based off of other characters. They can be unlocked by playing a certain number of vs mode matches or completing a certain objective.

Luigi

Mario's brother. Slower and slightly more powerful than mario(?).

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B+Left/Right: Green Missile: Hold down B to charge up a headbut like attack.
  • B+Up: Super Jump Punch: If you are physically touching another character when initiating this attack, you set the character on fire and it does more dammage.
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Luigi Cyclone: Like mario cyclone exept it characters bounce around inside the cyclone instead of getting knocked away(i know theres a better way to say that).
Unlocked by playing 800 vs matches or by completing the first stage of adventure mode (the mario platformer one) with a time with a 2 in the seconds meter. Then you will fight luigi and peach. and if you win, you get luigi.

Dr. Mario

Mario in a doctor suit. Starred in the puzzle game Dr Mario. Slightly slower and more powerful than mario.

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Megavitamins: red/white pills that bounce fairly high and do damage when they hit stuff.
  • B+Left/Right: Super Sheet: works like Mario's Cape.
  • B+Up: Super Jump Punch: works like Mario's Super Jump Punch
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Dr. Tornado: works like Mario's Tornado.
Unlocked by playing 100 vs matches or completing classic mode with mario(any difficulty).

Jigglypuff

A pink pokemon. Jigglypuff is able to inflate itself like a balloon and thus float very high.

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Rollout
    • You spin arround in one place and start sparkling. When you let go, you charge out really fast and if you hit anyone at full charge, its almost a definite KO.
    • If you miss, you will fly off the stage. If you don't charge it all the way, you usually can turn around kind of.
  • B+Left/Right: Pound
    • A punch. Used in the air, it gives pretty good horizontal distance. You can use this between every little mini jump that jiggly puff does to gain significant horizontal distance.
  • B+Up: Sing
    • You sing and anyone in the immidiate vicinity falls asleep. You are then free to attack them while they are asleep.
    • A pretty much useless attack in SSBM because you sing for about as long as they stay asleep. The sleep in SSB is a whole lot better.
  • B+Down: Rest
    • A really hard attack to do right. Basically, you have to use it exactly when you touch the top of their head. You have to jump on their head first. If you do it right, You will hear the homerun sound and they will instantly be KO'd.
    • Whether you miss or not, you will fall asleep for about 3 seconds, in which time you can't do anything. Therfore, don't use this attack unless you're good at timing.
Unlocked by playing 50 vs matches or completing Classic or Adventure mode with any character.

Ganondorf

Dark wizard in Zelda games. Plays like a slower, more powerful Captain Falcon.

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Warlock Punch
    • Exactly like Falcon Punch exept more powerful and slower.
  • B+Left/Right: Gerudo Dragon
    • Same as Falcon whatever.
  • B+Up: Dark Dive
    • Same as falcon dive and also can cut through kirby's stone attack.
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Wizard's Foot
    • Same as Falcon Kick.
Unlocked by playing 600 vs matches or completing event match 29.

Falco

Another member of the Starfox team. Plays like a slower, more powerful Fox.

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Blaster
    • Falco's blaster is slower, more powerful, and actually stops opponents from moving a bit each time a bolt hits them.
  • B+Left/Right: Falco Phantasm
    • Same as Fox Illusion.
  • B+Up: Fire Bird
    • Same as FireFox
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Reflector
    • Same as Fox's Reflector.
Unlocked by playing 300 vs matches or completing the 100 man melee.

Young Link

Plays like a faster, less powerful link. He can wall jump.

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Fire Bow
    • Same as Link's bow exept with flames and its more powerful.(?)
  • B+Left/Right: Boomerang
    • Same as Link's Boomerang.
  • B+Up: Spin Attack
    • Unlike Link's Spin Attack, Young Link's Spin attack traps enemies for the whole duration of the attack and flings them away at the end of the attack.
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Bomb
    • Same as Link's Bomb.

Wall Jumping: If you've ever played a 2d metroid game, you know what this means. Basically, to wall jump with young link, just jump into a wall and exactly when you touch it, hit the direction going away from the wall. you should flash white a bit and jump the opposite wall. A good place to practice this is Young link's target smash level where you're required to do it anyway.

Pichu

Pichu is identical to Pikachu except most All his electrical attacks do damage to himself, the attacks are more powerful, and he's a little more nimble.

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Thunder Jolt
    • Same as Pikachu's Thunderbolt exept you do 2% damage to yourself everytime you use it.
  • B+Left/Right: Skull Bash
    • Same as Pikachu's and it doesn't do damage to yourself.
  • B+Up: Quick Attack
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Thunder
    • If you make it so the bolt doesn't hit Pichu(stand under a platform, it won't do damage to Pichu.

Mewtwo

Physcic Pokemon! has fancy effects with all the items by floating them around. The hammer will just float around him in a circle.

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Shadow Ball
    • A chargable Charge Shot like attack. When you fire it, it has considerable kickback and it flies in a zigzag pattern.
    • While charging, someone behind you will recieve damage by the glowing ball youre charging.
  • B+Left/Right: Confusion
    • Stun inducer. Use in short range
  • B+Up: Teleport
    • A no damage attack that can teleport you through solid objects. You can move in any direction by holding the Control Stick.
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Disable
    • Randomly disable's one of your opponent's attacks for a while(?).

Marth

Character from the Fire Emblem Series of games. Is slightly more nimble and weaker than Roy.

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Shield Breaker
    • A chargable sword slash.
  • B+Left/Right: Dancing Blade
    • Dance around with your sword for a while.
  • B+Up: Dolphin Slash
    • Jump up with your sword.
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Counter
    • A counter move. If used while they attack you, you account their attack and whack them with your sword.

Roy

Character from the Fire Emblem Series of games. Plays exactly like Marth exept he is more powerful and slower . B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Fire Blade
    • This attack can be charged by holding down the B button.
    • If you charge this up for about 10 seconds(the max), there will be a huge explosion and anyone you hit will get 50% damage and a likely KO but you also do 10% damage to yourself.
  • B+Left/Right: Double Edge Dance
    • Same as marth.
  • B+Up: Blaster
  • Same as Marth exept with bigger range and flames.
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Counter
    • Same as Marth.

Mr. Game & Watch

The star of all those old nintendo handheld lcd games.

B Button Special Attacks:

  • B Button: Chef: Flying sausages! Flings burning sausages.
  • B+Left/Right: Judgment: A number appears above Mr. Game and Watch's head and the attack does damage according to the number.
    • 1: does damage to Mr. Game & Watch
    • 2: don't know.
    • 3:don't know.
    • 4: don't know.
    • 5: a medium damage attack that engulfs the enemy in flames.
    • 6: don't know.
    • 7: makes 1 'food item' appear in front of character.
    • 8: don't know.
    • 9: lighting attack with Home Run Bat sound effect. it is a meteor attack and will usually KO enemys with high damage.
  • B+Up: Fire: Two guys appear with a trampoline and bounce Mr. Game and Watch up. Does damage if you hit anyone with your body.
    • Can be used as a third jump to return to the stage.
  • B+Down: Oil Panic: Whenever someone uses a projectile weapon against you pull this out to absorb in one of the 3 slots in the bucket thing. if you absorb 3 projectiles, then the next time you use B+down you'll throw oil in the direction you're facing doing damage equivalent to the sum of the damage of the projectiles you absorbed. For instance, if you absorb 3 fully charged Power Beam shots from Samus, this attack will do about 60% damage.

Stages

Venom

Like corneria execpt from the front view. There are four main wings arranged in an X around the body that act as sloping platforms that you can drop through. arwings still come along the side of the ship somtimes(?)

Corneria

Fight on the ship from the Starfox games. A large course with two main sections. Arwings swoop down sometimes and shoot horizontally. They also can act as temporary platforms. Some other Arwings drop bombs on the stage. Every once in a while the big ship's main lasers charge and fire on the left side of the stage.

Hyrule Temple

The largest stage in the game. There is a basement and two areas on the top. on the left side of the stage, theres a platform by the spawn area and to the far left, an exit from the basement. On the right side, some ruins make 3 stacked platforms and a smaller platform nearer the center. At the bottom, there is a smaller platform off to the right side. This course has no hazards.

Fountain of Dreams

A stage from the Kirby games. Its a basic flat stage with three floating platforms arranged in a pyramid shape. The bottom two slowly float up and down. The bottom flat part is reflective. There are no hazards in this stage

Single Player Modes

There are a few single player modes, including the SSB classic, a new adventure mode, All star mode, Multiman melee, Sandbag, and Event Matches. The strategy for them is covered here

Classic Mode

The classic battle after battle mode, ending with a showdown against the master hand. In SSBM, the round characters are randomized although they follow the same pattern. Also, depending on what difficulty you are on, Crazy Hand(The left hand) will join Master Hand in the final fight.

Adventure Mode

A more story driven classic mode, with longer platformer levels separated by tradition arena matches.

All Star Mode

A mode where you battle all 30 characters in groups of 1,2 or 3. Your damage stays with you between matches, but there are three one-time use heart peices that you can use. Only unlocked after you have unlocked every character.

Target Test

A mode where you use a character's skills to break ten targets in a specialized arena. You are also awarded points for time taken.

Multi man Melee

These involve fighting lots of light, stupid, easy little wireframe male and female figures. The stage is a basic big platform on bottom with pyramid arranged floating platforms on top. The wireframes come in 5 at a time.

10 Man Melee

Defeat 10 of them to succeed. More of a time test than endurance.

100 Man Melee

A little harder because the AI gets smarter with the last 25 or so.

Endless Melee

Defeat more and more as the AI gets better and the wireframes get heavier. As the title suggests, it is in fact endless.

15 minute Melee

Stay alive for 15 minutes. The wireframes are endless until the time is up. The best strategy to beat this is to be donkey kong and stay in the middle of the stage and use his down+b attack the whole time. It attacks on both sides, and kills the wireframes instantly. just do this for 15 minutes and you win.

When you beat this, you get the hidden stage Donkey Kong from the original SSB.

Cruel Melee

Instead of light and stupid, the wireframes in this one are all at an AI level around 11(the real numbers stop at 9) and are super hard to knock off the stage. They are endless, but even the best don't survive long anyway.

Homerun Contest

You basically are on a stage with a sandbag and a homerun bat. Your job is to to the most damage to the sandbag without knocking it off the platform in 10 seconds and then whacking it with the homerun bat smash. It then tells you the distance you smashed it. The best way to beat this is with Yoshi. Simply jump above Sandbag and do the DownA attack about 4 times, or till you have around 120 damage. Then go pick up the bat and smash it.

If you get more than 1300 ft, then you get the Stage Yoshi's Story from the original SSB.

Event Matches

These matches are induvidual arena type matches with specific circumstances or characters. There are 51 in all. To get Event Match 51, you have to beat all the other 50 first.
