The third quest may be the second activated if you talk to Deckard Cain after completing the Golden Bird, or even the first if you do so after entering the Great Marsh:

Deckard Cain
Never forget that your ultimate purpose here in Kurast is to destroy Mephisto. The ancient Horadrim imprisoned the Lord of Hatred inside the Guardian Tower that is located within the Temple City of Travincal.

Know this, friend. The only way to gain entry to Mephisto's prison is to destroy the artifact known as the Compelling Orb.

Mephisto used this device to control the Zakarum Priests and their followers. The Orb can only be destroyed with an ancient flail imbued with the spirit of the one incorruptible priest.

Soon after his imprisonment, Mephisto worked his evil corruption on the Zakarum priesthood. All were turned to his dark ways, save one - Khalim, the Que-Hegan of the High Council.

Mephisto directed the other Council priests to slay and dismember Khalim and then scatter his remains across the Kingdom. The Priest Sankekur succeeded Khalim as Que-Hegan, eventually becoming the embodiment of Mephisto here on the mortal plane.

The corrupted High Council fashioned an Orb to control the rest of the Zakarum faithful and used their powers to hide the lair of their master from mortals.

Your task is to collect the scattered relics of Khalim - his Heart, his Brain, and his Eye. Then, using the Horadric Cube, transmute Khalim's Flail with his relics.

Once this is accomplished, you must destroy the Compelling Orb with Khalim's Will to open the way into the corrupt sanctum of Mephisto.

Find Khalim's relics. Search for his Eye in the Spider Cavern.

This quest is mandatory in Single Player, but in a multiplayer game you can take a portal created by another player to the waypoint on the second level of the Durance of Hatred and activate it, as long as you've killed the High Council in the Blackened Temple first.

Khalim's relics[edit]

Alternatively, this quest is activated whenever you pick up one of Khalim's relics.

Relic Location Guardian
Khalim's Eye Spider Cavern Ssark the Burning
Khalim's Brain Flayer Jungle Level 3 Witch Doctor Endugu
Khalim's Heart Sewers Level 2 Icehawk Riftwing
Khalim's Flail Travincal Super Unique Council Member

All but Khalim's Flail can be found in chests, while the Flail is the only relic which requires you to kill its guardian.

Khalim's Eye[edit]

Khalim's Eye can be found in a chest in the south corner of the Spider Cavern, beneath a clearing away from the river in the Spider Forest, where it's guarded by Ssark the Burning. It requires one inventory space.

DII Icon Khalim's Will.png Khalim's Will
Search for Khalim's Brain in the Flayer Dungeon.

If you return to Kurast Docks to talk to Deckard Cain:

Deckard Cain
Ahh... Khalim's Eye! Only it can reveal the true path to Mephisto.

Place the Eye in the Horadric Cube along with Khalim's other relics - the Heart, the Brain and the Flail.

However, you don't need to do so.

Khalim's Brain[edit]

Khalim's Eye can be found in a chest on the third level of the Flayer Dungeon, beneath the same clearing containing the Gidbinn in the Flayer Jungle, where it's guarded by Witch Doctor Endugu. It also requires one inventory space.

DII Icon Khalim's Will.png Khalim's Will
Search for Khalim's Heart in the Sewers under the Kurast Bazaar.

If you return to Kurast Docks to talk to Deckard Cain:

Deckard Cain
This is most fortunate! Khalim's Brain knows Mephisto's weakness.

Place it in the Horadric Cube along with Khalim's other relics - the Eye, the Heart, and the Flail.

Once again, you don't need to do so.

Khalim's Heart[edit]

Khalim's Heart can be found in a chest at the northeast end of the second level of the Sewers beneath the Kurast Bazaar and Upper Kurast, where the sewer lever that opens the sewer stairs is guarded by Icehawk Riftwing. Once again, it requires one inventory space.

DII Icon Khalim's Will.png Khalim's Will
Search for Khalim's Flail in Travincal. Beware the High Council.

If you return to Kurast Docks to talk to Deckard Cain:

Deckard Cain
You have found Khalim's Heart, and it still bears the courage to face Mephisto!

Place it in the Horadric Cube along with Khalim's other relics - the Eye, the Brain, and the Flail.

Yet again, you don't need to do so.

Khalim's Flail[edit]

Khalim's Flail is dropped by the first Super Unique Council Member killed when you enter the Blackened Temple in Travincal. It requires 3x2 inventory space.

Khalim's Flail
  • One-Hand Damage: 1 to 15
  • Durability: 30
  • Required Dexterity: 35
  • Required Strength: 41
  • Mace Class - Speed -10

Ask Cain about Khalim's relics.

If you return to Kurast Docks to do so:

Deckard Cain
Once properly imbued, Khalim's Flail can destroy the Compelling Orb and reveal the way to Mephisto.

Place it into the Horadric Cube along with Khalim's relics - his Heart, his Brain, and his Eye. Then, transmute them to carry out Khalim's Will.
DII Icon Khalim's Will.png Khalim's Will
Transmute Khalim's relics - the Flail, Eye, Heart, and Brain - with the Horadric Cube.

As ever, you can always act on your own initiative instead.

Khalim's Will[edit]

If you don't have a Horadric Cube for some reason, the second Super Unique Council Member killed in Travincal will drop one. Place all of Khalim's relics inside it, then left-click the Transmute button to imbue Khalim's Will.

Khalim's Will
  • One-Hand Damage: 1 to 15
  • Durability: 30
  • Mace Class - Speed -10
  • 50% Increased Attack Speed
  • +40 Attack Rating
  • Adds 1-40 Lightning Damage
  • 6% Mana Stolen per hit
  • 6% Life Stolen per hit
  • +50% Damage to Undead

Use Khalim's Will to smash the Compelling Orb.

If you return to Kurast Docks to talk to Cain beforehand:

Deckard Cain
Masterfully done, hero! You have crafted Khalim's Will. Employ it to destroy the Compelling Orb and open the way to Mephisto.

May the true Light guide your way.

The Compelling Orb is on the left side of the entrance inside the Blackened Temple in the middle of the northeast side of Travincal: it's advisable to kill the High Council before equipping Khalim's Will and attacking the Orb to destroy it.
