==World 3-1==
Slide down the pipe to start the level. The first Star Coin is past the checkpoint. When you see a red pipe next to two green pipes, head down the middle pipe. Swim to the right, grab the Star Coin, and go out the pipe on the right. For the second Star Coin, wait until the big fish starts heading towards the right, and grab it. To make the third Star Coin easier to grab, hit the switch. If you don't, you can always destroy the blocks, but the fish might get you when you grab the coin. Swim as fast as you can and head up the pipe to finish the level.

World 3 is one of the two worlds after World 2 and leading to World 5, likely being the one you clear first since it is easier to unlock. The theme of this world is beaches and water, although not every level is based around it. Particularly notable is the Ghost House, which should be the first one most will encounter on a normal playthrough. There are only one of each Toad House, while any secret paths branch away from the main route more.
==World 3-A==
Head right. Past the checkpoint, hit the red switch in the water to make blocks appear and continue. In the next water hole, go down and let the water-glider destroy blocks to access the first Star Coin. Get out of the water and head right. Run and jump from the first barrel to reach the second Star Coin. Go through the green warp pipe. If you are Mini Mario or have a Mini Mushroom go in the overhead green warp pipe and grab the third Star Coin by running over the water and jumping. Go out the green pipe on the right, and finish the level.

Head right, and when you hit the checkpoint, go down the yellow warp pipe. Grab the first Star Coin and head out the green warp pipe. Head across the balancing platforms and jump to the second Star Coin. If you head into the green pipe when you get on the moving mushroom, you can get a lot of coins and it leads to the alternate exit, which leads to World 3-B. Otherwise, keep heading right. Grab the third Star Coin when the mushroom is extremely tilted and finish the level.

! Level !! Star Coins
|-
| World 3-1 ||
# Around where the Cheep Chomp first appears, there is a green Warp Pipe sandwiched between a red and a green pipe that spews produces currents. Go through the Warp Pipe to enter a small area with the Star Coin.
# This coin is plainly visible between two water-spewing pipes, but the Cheep Chomp nearby may pose a danger.
# The coin is surrounded by blocks a bit past the P-Switch. Hitting the P-Switch is the safest way to obtain it.
|-
| World 3-A ||
# The coin is surrounded by blocks. Have a Skeeter break the blocks to obtain it.
# This one is airborne. A dashing jump will barely let you get it, but you can use the Koopa or Skeeter for a boost.
# Go into the first of the two ceiling pipes after going through a horizontal pipe. As Mini Mario, run across the water and jump in the middle of the bonus area to collect the coin.
|-
| World 3-2 ||
# In a bonus area accessible from a pipe soon after the checkpoint. Do a well-timed jump on the moving mushroom to get it.
# Use the second set of scale platforms to reach a high up ledge, where the coin is located.
# In the air above the final abyss. The moving mushroom makes it difficult to collect.
|-
| World 3-B ||
# When you first see this coin, it is inaccessible. Go down the first red warp pipe after seeing the coin, then go to the left of the secret area and take the red pipe up to collect it.
# From the pipe to the left of the middle checkpoint, wall jump up the gap between the two pipes to reach an area supported by a tiny pipe where the coin can be found.
# Out in the open near the flagpole. The only obstacle here are some dangerously-placed Piranha Plants.
|-
| World 3-C ||
# The coin is on a platform below a tall bridge. Stand on the falling platforms to drop down to it.
# You'll need to swim in the water for this one. While evading the Spike Bass, wall jump up the two stone platforms surrounding the coin to obtain it.
# After hitting the P-Switch, quickly follow the trail of coins to a red pipe. Jump into it and stay on the platform you emerge out on to drop to the coin.
|-
| World 3-Tower ||
# From the first cannon pipe, fall to the lowest fence and climb to the left. Climb up the next fence to get to where the Star Coin is.
# After switching sides on the fence for the first time, move around the Amps to the left and switch again. Go up, left a room and up a room to reach the Star Coin in front of a fence.
# In the first section, you want to take the rightmost door. In the area it leads to, press the red switch and quickly move up to get to the door. The Star Coin is right next to it.
|-
| World 3-3 ||
# Sink down upon reaching the first gap in the floor. A Star Coin is located here, guarded by a single Blooper.
# After the red ring is a series of pipes. Go through the second one from the left and swim to the bottom-right of the area you're sent to. The coin is there for you to collect if you can dodge the Bloopers in the way.
# Below the exit pipe pointed to by the sign, fall down the gap to get the Star Coin at the bottom. Start swimming up once you do, as some Bloopers will ambush you right after.
|-
| World 3-Ghost ||
# Behind the door beside the second P-Switch is a room with the coin and some Splunkins. Bounce off a Splunkin to get it.
# After pressing the second P-Switch, go up the staircase and jump to the other staircase as soon as you can. Get to the top of that staircase for the Star Coin.
# You need to be Shell Mario for this. Before going into the exit door, make a Shell Dash to the right to break some blocks in the wall. The Star Coin can be found behind it.
|-
| World 3-Castle ||
# In a small pocket right beside a Skewer. Watch out for that Skewer when grabbing it.
# After the donut lift, jump to the rope and swing left to the ceiling. Go left to get to a Star Coin that could be seen but not taken earlier.
# To the right of the double doors is a small gap. One last Skewer is beyond that gap, as well as the coin. Time your jumps right so you can leap to the ledge with the Star Coin.

===Secret exits===
==World 3-Tower==
Go down the middle pipe to be launched up. Grab the grid by pressing up. You can destroy things on the opposite side by pressing the Dash button or jump up to the next one by pressing Jump. Let yourself fall to the last, big grid and go left and up. Wall-jump to grab the first Star Coin. Fall down to the bottom and launch yourself up. This time, grab the uppermost grid and climb. To flip sides, press the Dash button. Go up on the right and flip the grid to come back to the forefront. Destroy the two columns of blocks and go left to grab the second Star Coin. From the coin, go back to the flip, go right and up to the door. Hit the red switch and climb quickly to the door and the third Star Coin. Go through, and then climb up to the left to go through the double doors to Bowser Jr. Destroy Bowser Jr. by jumping on him.

====World 3-2====
==World 3-B==
On the first erratic-moving mushroom, you might notice a set of pipes while crossing the wide pit. The pipe you want to go down is the green-colored one at the right, which takes you to a secret area with a P-Switch and a Spin Block. The P-Switch creates a ton of silver coins that you can use the Spin Block to collect. After you're done, go down the right pipe to reach the flagpole area. You must hop across some more tilting platforms before you get to the pole.
Head right until you come across a red warp pipe that is by itself, below an overhanging red pipe. Go left and up the red pipe on the left side. Grab the first Star Coin, go back down, right, and up. For the second Star Coin, head right slightly and wall-jump between the red pipe and the green pipe to go right and grab the coin. Let yourself down and continue right. Grab the third Star Coin and finish the level.

Going through this exit leads you to World 3-B, a level which continues the athletic challenge and which can act as a major shortcut across the world.
==World 3-3==
Head down the green pipe to start this underwater level. Head right until the second yellow pipe. Head down and grab the first Star Coin to the left. Hit the switch by sinking to it, head back up and left, go down on the right where the jets have stopped. In the area with lots of pipes, head down the third one. Go to the bottom right corner to grab the second Star Coin. The exit is in the top right corner. Allow yourself to be pushed up and right. All the way at the right, let yourself sink to the third coin. Come back to the overhead green warp pipe quickly to avoid the Bloopers and finish the level.

====World 3-Ghost====
==World 3-C==
You can access this secret exit once you get to the third P-Switch, which is the one required to make the hidden door appear. While one did appear close by the moment you hit the switch, there is in fact another hidden door that the switch reveals. Once you hit the P-Switch, immediately run up the first set of stairs, then jump over the gap and fall down the stairs to the left. The hidden exit is to the immediate right of the second P-Switch. Outside, wall jump off the left set of blocks to get to the horizontal block platform. Jump from there to the red flagpole.
When you see the first Star Coin, stand above it on the platforms to fall to it. Jump back up quickly to avoid the big fish. When you go for the second Star Coin from underneath, be careful to avoid the big fish as well. Hit the switch and hurry to the right to go into the red warp pipe. This will drop you onto the third Star Coin, and you can now finish the level.

Going through this well-hidden back door takes you down a path to the World 3 Cannon. The cannon launches you high above sea level to the rocky peaks of World 6. Watch out for the hike in difficulty!
==World 3-Ghost House==
Hit the orange switch to make stairs appear, which you can climb to continue. Skip the first door and head to the second, where you can jump on top of a pumpkin to grab the first Star Coin. Exit and hit the switch as the platform nears the bottom of its path. Climb the stairs, then jump onto the staircase on the left and go get the second Star Coin. Go back and hit the switch and this time climb all the way to the right. Now you have an opportunity for an alternate exit which leads to World 3-Cannon. Hit the block you see from underneath and then hit the switch. Go back to the previous switch and go through the new door (between the old door and the switch). Finish the level for the alternate path. Otherwise, hit the switch, climb the staircase, fall down, and go through the new door. For this third coin, you need to be Shell Mario. It is possible to get one by climbing on the left and hitting the block. Otherwise, use a Red Mushroom Shop. Once you are Shell Mario, run forward (jumping where necessary), and slide up the staircases to destroy the blocks all the way on the right. Grab the third Star Coin and head through the door to finish the level.

==World 3-Cannon==
Climb in the cannon to travel to World 6.

==World 3-Castle==
Head right, and when the spiked column is up, run under to grab the first Star Coin. To get out, wait until it goes back up. Next, continue and be careful of the suicidal slabs of concrete (they're just begging to be killed when they fall down like that). Go up the pole and get off on the right. Run across the yellow blocks and grab the rope. Swing yourself and release at the left to run left and above the ceiling. Drop down to grab the second Star Coin. Go back to the rope and release yourself on the right. When you reach the double doors, run, and duck just as you reach the wall to go underneath. Wait in the water for the opportune moment and grab the last Star Coin. Go back to the double doors and go in to meet the boss, the Big White and Purple Fish with Yellow Fins. To defeat him, jump on him three times. Jump on the little fish's head to knock them dead. Beware!
