Upon reaching the lake front, your rival and you will see two people, Professor Rowan, and his aide (Dawn or Lucas depending on your gender). There will be a small bit of "discussion", and Rowan and his aide will leave, accidently forgeting a suitcase. After they leave, your rival goes and picks it up to return it. Since it is in the grass, two Starly come and attack you. You and your rival now have a choice of Pokémon:

Pokémon ! Type ! General Overview!
Turtwig Grass Turtwig is the grass starter of this game. It's final form, Torterra is a Grass/Ground mixture, allowing it to gain ground based attacks like Earthquake. Not choosing Turtwig isn't all that big a deal, because it can easily be replaced by something like the Budew family (Budew, Roselia, and Roserade).
Chimchar} Fire Chimchar is the fire starter of this game. It's evolutions also gains an extra type (Fighting), this time appearing when your Chimchar evolves into Monferno, the second stage. This family is quick and powerful in attacks, allowing for attacks like Flame Wheel and Close Combat to be utilized easily. One should note that there are only 5 total Pokémon that have a fire type pre-National Dex, and since Ponyta and Rapidash are not considered the best, this is a overall good choice.
Piplup Water Piplup is the water starter of this game. When it finally evolves into Empoloen, it also get a second type, this time of Steel. This family is overall a good choice, and learns good moves. Empoloen can learn things like Brine and Hydro Pump, making it a good choice as it can also learn one of the most powerful water moves, Surf which has the dual purpose of allowing movement on water. Piplup's family also isn't all that big a deal type-wise because there will be many different water Pokémon families, like the Shellos family (Shellos, Gastrodon) and the Buizel family (Buizel, Floatzel.

Remember: Your rival will always chose the Pokémon that is strong against your, and Rowan's aide will always choose the one weak against yours.

After choosing the starter you would like, knock out the level 2 Starly that dares defy you. After the battle, go back to Twinleaf, get the shoes, and go to Sandgem.
