LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures is an action-adventure game. It plays simlarly to other games from the series (LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Batman) with only minor gameplay modifications. The game covers all three original Indiana Jones movies relatively closely to their respective story lines with only a few modifications. Among other things the "Red Brick" system present in the other 2 games of the series was replaced with a postage system where the player has to fetch a parcel from around the stage and post it in that stage's letter box in order to unlock extras. The gameplay of the Indiana Jones present in LEGO Starwars is completely different from the gameplay of him in his own title.

LEGO Indiana Jones covers the events of the first three films: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade. Although released shortly after Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the events of that film wouldn't be included until the game's sequel: The Adventure Continues. Players join Indiana Jones and his allies by whip swinging, digging, building and sneaking through enemy bases in order to pursue a variety of mysterious and dangerous artifacts.
