Earthgift Shrine is a new 5-level Soul of Chaos dungeon added in the Dawn of Souls release of Final Fantasy I. It is an optional dungeon, located between Castle Cornelia and the Temple of Chaos. Access is granted once players have defeated the Fiend of Earth, Lich.

Unlike regular dungeons, Earthgift Shrine is not straightforward in design. It features an entrance area followed by four randomly-ordered basement levels consisting of two Cavern-style basements, one Desert-style basement, and one Forest-style basement. Each of these levels has a fixed layout, but they may be presented to the player in any order:

  • For example, the player may encounter
    • B1: Forest -> B2: Cavern A -> B3: Desert -> B4: Cavern B
    • B1: Cavern A -> B2: Cavern B -> B3: Desert -> B4: Forest
    • or another of the 24 possible combinations!

Treasure chest locations are not necessarily fixed on any of these levels, but are spread among all four.

A fifth basement level lies beyond the first four and is home to four new bosses. Astute Final Fantasy fans might recognize these bosses, as they all previously appeared in Final Fantasy III (not to be confused with Final Fantasy VI). Players will need to run the entirety of Earthgift Shrine at least four times in order to see all four new bosses.

It is highly recommended that you save your game before entering Earthgift Shrine! It is also highly recommended that you do not save inside Earthgift Shrine, as once you enter the basements, there is no way out except for defeating a boss.

Entrance Area

A lone dwarf keeps watch over the entrance area and warns you of monsters beyond the door. If you haven't defeated Lich yet, you can't continue beyond this point. WARNING: Once you enter the nearby door, you will be unable to return to this area. Also, the White Magic spell Exit and Black magic spell Teleport will not function further inside! Enter the door when ready.

Basements 1-4

Treasure chests contained on these levels reset between runs through Earthgift Shrine and may be looted additional times for more items! Please note that locations and contents of chests may vary between runs.

The order you encounter the following levels is random!

Cavern A Basement

It's hard to get lost here, as there's only one path! Follow the path and grab any treasure chests you see along the way. The stairs down are located in the upper right corner of the room.

Cavern B Basement

This small level is full of forking paths that result in dead ends, although some dead ends may contain treasure chests! Make your way to the exit in the upper left corner of the room to proceed.

Desert Basement

You start seemingly in the middle of nowhere in the Desert. Pick a direction to wander and keep an eye out for formations of three trees. These form directional arrows intended to guide you to the exit. Treasure chests can occasionally be found near trees as well. Keep following the arrows until you reach an oasis with a nearby staircase and exit down.

Forest Basement

This basement level will keep you busy. As soon as you enter, you can spot the exit, but you'll need to go around the long way to get to it. Your path will be roughly circular along a counter-clockwise route. Most forking paths will be dead ends, although some may contain treasure chests. This level is distinctive in that monsters are visible on the screen and a large number of them are blocking your path. Some even roam around! Clear them out of your path by walking near one and pressing A to engage. Continue in your circular pattern towards the exit. You'll know you're close when you spot a lone grave.

Basement 5 (Boss Floor)

This floor contains no enemies beyond the four bosses lying in wait. To engage a boss, simply approach one of the flames and press A. You may only fight one boss before being forced to exit to the surface, so choose wisely!

2-Headed Dragon

2-Headed Dragon can be found in the northwest (upper left) room.

Ahriman

Ahriman can be found in the northeast (upper right) room. A Megalixir can be found in the nearby treasure chest.

Cerberus

Cerberus can be found in the southwest (bottom left) room.

Echidna

Echidna can be found in the southeast (bottom right) room.
