The Fight Area is the location for any trainers seeking a challenge and the ultimate rewards for their labor. It's advisable to use a team that is focused on competitive battling because if you use the pokemon you've used throughout your adventure then you probably won't make it very far in the Battle Tower.

Once you step off the ferry from Snowpoint City, you will immediately run into your rival, who is headed toward the Fight Area's resident Battle Tower looking for a challenge. Renowned trainer, Buck, interrupts you telling you about a volcano located deep in the island. Afterwards, he heads off towards Stark Mountain.

You can go back to Snowpoint City at any time, using the Sailor that brought you to the Battle Park. However, using HM02 Fly also works, so it is generally better to use it.

Tasks

  • Inside the Poké Mart, speak to the woman wearing the hat standing just inside the door to receive the Scope Lens.
  • When you enter the building leading to the Battle Park, the receptionist will hand you a Point Card, which will keep track of the BP you earn in the Battle Tower.
  • To proceed on to Route 225, ownership of the National Dex is required.
  • Speak to the fisherman standing near the entrance of Route 225 to obtain the Super Rod.
  • Take Buck to Magma Stone inside Stark Mountain. Talk to him in Survival Area. Return to Magma Stone to fight Heatran.
  • Meet the Elemental Starter Pokémon move tutor on Route 228 to teach your final evolved starters Blast Burn, Frenzy Plant, or Hydro Cannon.

Rival Battle

Once you have returned from your mission with Buck to retrieve the Magma Stone, your rival will be waiting at the Fight Area. He will be around for a rematch every Saturday and Sunday. Once you become a 20-time Pokémon League Champion, his Pokémon will boost up by 10 levels.

Like all rivals, his team depends on which Pokemon you started with. However, no matter which Pokemon you chose at the beginning of the game, he will always start with Staraptor, who will use Intimidate to lower your Pokemon's Attack power. Staraptor has Close Combat and Steel Wing to deal with Steel, Ice and Rock types, although he does not have anything to cover his weakness to Electric types. However he is quite fast and will most likely use U-Turn to hit and run if you use an Electric type, allowing the rival to switch to a Pokemon better suited to deal with your Pokemon. Staraptor also knows Aerial Ace.

Heracross is possibly the rivals most dangerous Pokemon apart from his Starter and perhaps Snorlax. Having tremendous Attack power and a strong physical moveset, Heracross can give even a Flying type a run for its money if he hits it with Rock Slide. He also has Megahorn and Close Combat which are both extremely powerful moves but Close Combat will lower his Defence and Special Defence. Heracross also knows Night Slash but this move is the least dangerous in his moveset. Heracross' Swarm will increase the strength of his already devastating Megahorn when he's tired.

Snorlax is bulky and a powerful physical Attacker. He has Earthquake, Crunch and Body Slam to attack and Rest to heal itself. Rest allows him to restore all of his HP and heal any status problem at the cost of forcing him to sleep for three turns. While he's asleep, he's defenceless against your onslaught but he does have enough bulk to take some pretty powerful blows. Poison won't work on him because of Immunity.

Floatzel is fast and has good Attack power in addition to the priority move Aqua Jet in case you're using a faster Pokemon or a prioity move of your own. He also has Brick Break, Ice Fang and Crunch. His special ability, Swift Swim, will only activate if you are using Rain Dance or Kyogre and it increases Floatzel's Speed.

Rapidash has Will-O-Wisp to cause a burn and Sunny Day to power up his Fire Blast. He also has Bounce which allows him to dodge an attack on one turn and strike on the next with a small chance of causing paralysis. You're not likely to bother with Fire type moves but if your stupid enough to try, not only will it do no damage but it will give Rapidash's Fire Blast a boost thanks to Flash Fire.

Roserade uses Grasswistle, but this move has appalling accuracy. If it does hit however, you're Pokemon will fall asleep unless it is immune to the move or protected by Safeguard. Roserade also has Giga Drain and Shadow Ball, which are both Special Attacks as well as a Physical Attack, Poison Jab. If you use a Status move, Roserade will be recalled in order to activate Natural Cure to heal the Status problem.

Obviously the Starter Pokemon are the biggest threat and each of them will have a Sitrus Berry. Infernape is both a Special and Physical fighter with Focus Blast and Flamethrower on the Special side and Shadow Claw and Aerial Ace on the Physical side. He is fast and when he's tired his Flamethrower, which is already a powerful move, will get a boost from Blaze.

Torterra has Leech Seed in addition to his Sitrus Berry to restore health and suck away your Pokemon's energy on each turn. He has Leaf Storm, which lowers his Special Attack but is a powerful move and will regain its power if Torterra activates Overgrow. Torterra also has Earthquake to deal with Fire types and Crunch is his final move.

Empoleon has a powerful Hydro Pump which will get a power boost if Torrent is activated. The rest of his moveset is less threatening since Empoleon is not particularly powerful when it comes to Physical Attacks. Nonetheless Drill Peck is super effective on Fighting types. Metal Claw is weak but has a chance of raising Empoleon's Attack. Shadow Claw is just there to fill a moveslot; a waste of a TM basically.

The Battle Tower

The Battle Tower is, oddly, not a place you can level up your Pokémon, but a place to see how strong your Pokémon really are, and to win great prizes. Now, there are three different ways to challenge the Battle Tower, and two additional ways to fight in those. The first is for solo challengers, the second is for Multiplayer, and the third is for Wi-Fi connection.

Solo Battles

Solo battles are the ones to do if you don't have a friend or Wi-Fi to play with. The rules and restrictions are as follows:

  • If you enter a level 50 match, all your opponent's Pokémon will be at level 50
  • If you enter a Pokémon higher than level 50 for a level 50 match, it will automatically be brought down to level 50
  • Pokémon under the level requirement are allowed
  • EXP. points and money not gained
  • No duplicate Pokémon are allowed
  • No Pokémon may enter holding the same item as a participating Pokémon
  • Certain Legendary Pokémon are not allowed
  • No items may be used in-battle
  • Eggs may not participate

Now, the way the battles work is this: you choose three Pokémon (if you entered a Single Battle) or four Pokémon (if you entered a Double Battle). You will progress through a battle of seven trainers in a row. If you win a battle, you are automatically healed, and are Give three choices: Continue, Rest, or Retire.

  • Continue: fight the next trainer
  • Rest: saves your progress and allows you to exit. The next time you participate, you will start where you left off
  • Retire: quit battles and lose all progress therein

After you beat all seven trainers in a row, you will then be escorted back to the lobby. Here you will receive 3 BP (This increases every time you win 2 consecutive rounds). You can spend this on the Exchange Counters to the right and left of the Battle Tower.

Battle Tower Boss Palmer

Palmer is a very interesting person, only appearing in the 21st and 49th battle only in the solo matches. Palmer has a Rypheor, Dragonite, and Milotic. After defeating him, you will get 20BP instead of the normal amount. Many people have found that fighting up to him, defeating him, and then losing purposely the next round yields the best results, of 26BP. The reason for losing is the next couple rounds are harder than the rest up to that point, making it very efficient to get 26 for only 21 battles that are moderately easy than 52 for 21 that are easy and 21 that are harder.

Palmer is also your Rival's father.

The best counters are as follows. For Rypheor a good counter is Kingdra. Kingdra is good because it is fast, has high special attack and has the super effective move on both Rypheor and on Dragonite if it has ice beam or blizzard and surf or hydro pump. For Milotic a good counter is a fast, powerful electric type like Raikou, or Ampheros with a quick claw and thunder or thunderbolt. The last Pokémon should be a powerful one that doesn't have many weaknesses. A good Pokémon would be a Wobbofet since it can take a lot of damage and dish out almost two times the power.

Double Battles

Double battles are battles fought 2 vs 2, against one opponent. You choose four Pokémon to enter (except certain Legendaries which are banned, such as Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, etc.), and then battle it out with seven trainers consecutively. The same rules apply for double battles that they did for single battles, like the same species of Pokémon are banned, the same hold items are banned and more (look above for full details). Also, you get three BP for every round, or even consecutive trainers, that you defeat.

Multiplayer Battles

Multiplayer battles are double battles fought paired up with people you've paired up with earlier in your adventure. These people include Riley, Mira, Cheryl, Buck, and Marley. The combinations are:

To begin a Multiplayer Battle, walk up to the lady at the left counter in the Battle Tower. Once you accept the challenge, you will have to pick two Pokémon to fight with your allies Pokémon. Once this is done, the lady will take you up to the waiting room. Here you will need to pick one of the trainers. Once this is done, the lady will then lead you to the battle room. You will then fight seven rounds of two trainers. The battles are exactly like the Double Battles in Single mode, except your ally controls his/her own Pokémon. After you win, you will be awarded BP normally. You may also battle with a friend if you both choose the "Over Wireless" option.
