The last Fiend, Tiamat is located on the top floor of the Flying Fortress. He is strong against all elemental spells, so concentrate on using Saber on your Knight. Also use Protera, NulShock, and Invisira as necessary. He has a lot of HP but goes down quickly against a boosted Knight. Theoretically, he can be killed with the Break spell, but the chance of it actually working is so low you'll kill him in fewer rounds with standard attacks. After you restore the Wind Crystal, you can go back in time from the Temple of Chaos.

Located at the end of the first basement (the Earth Floor) of the Temple of Chaos, Lich returns and is stronger than before. Besides more HP, he can now cast Flare, so get ready to heal. As before, use Dia spells (he isn't as weak against Fire as he used to be) along with a Saber'd Knight's attack to kill him quickly.

Chaos is an evil demonic abomination created 2,000 years before Lukin's prophecy by the four fiends using Garland's body, who in turn were sent to the present by him, thus creating a time loop paradox. Defeat him in the lowest floor of the Temple of Chaos to break the loop by killing him before he can create the loop. You should have a few Phoenix Downs or purchase the Full-life spell for your white mage to help you. Don't waste your turns by casting spells on him because he is immune to every spell in the game. He is very difficult to defeat, so make sure you heal your team a lot. Saying Chaos is strong is an understatement - he can hit all four characters with elemental damage, has a powerful physical attack, and can use Curaja (though only once). All you can do is outlast him by using Protera every chance you get, reviving your characters, and keep all three Nul barriers up. Once he's dead the game will end.

The Kingdom of Corneria

Garland

Garland
Garland

Former knight of Cornelia turned evil, Garland kidnapped Princess Sarah and tried to ransom her for the throne. He also aligned himself with the four fiends and was sent back in time 2000 years to become Chaos.

A former knight of Cornelia, Garland turned evil and kidnapped the princess and stole the mystic Lute from the Castle as part of his schemes to gain more power. Around level 3 you should be able to defeat him without much difficulty. Have all of your physical fighters (including Red Mages) attack and Black Mages cast Fire or Thunder. White Mages should heal when necessary and attack otherwise. Defeat him to rescue the princess, get the Lute, and have the bridge repaired so you can leave the kingdom.

The Journey Begins

Bikke

Bikke the pirate
Bikke the pirate

A pirate whose gang attacks ships on the Inner Sea and occasionally takes refuge in Pravoka. Once his gang is defeated, he will give the Light Warriors his ship.

Nine of Bikke's lackey's protect him in the town of Pravoka. They are pathetically weak, and even a Mage can kill them in one hit. Just don't be surprised by the fight and go into it with your HP too low. You shouldn't even need to use magic for this one. Afterwards Bikke gives you his ship and you can reach Mt. Duergar and Elfheim.

Not really a boss, but a preset fight in front of the treasure chest with the Crown in the third basement of the Marsh Cave. You will have to fight between two and four of them. Make sure you heal beforehand, as chances are the trek through the cave has taken a lot out of you. Cast Protect on your characters (Invis helps too). Concentrate your attacks on one of the demons at a time and keep your HP up. A single hit from them can take up to 100HP, so make sure you are healing constantly. Starting in the third level of the Terra Cave, Piscodemons will be a random encounter.

Astos

Astos
Astos

Years before the game begins Astos, the Dark Elf, put the Elf Prince into a perpetual sleep and robbed the Elfheim castle. He also stole Matoya's Crystal Eye, preventing her from waking the prince. He originally appears as a normal Elf King, and asks the Light Warriors to retrieve "his" Crown from the Marsh Cave.

HP: 168
Gil: 2000
Exp: 2250
Atk: 26
Def: 40
MDef: 170
Strong Against: None
Weak Against: Bind (Hold)

Astos is the king of dark elves who stormed the castle of Elfheim five years before the Light Warriors began their quest. Astos cursed the Elf Prince with a never-ending sleep and stole everything in the treasury that wasn't locked with the Mystic Key. He is disguised as a king who is hiding somewhere near Elfheim, possibly in the creepy Western Keep. He appeares as a human originally, but when you give him the Crown (from the Marsh Cave), he'll transform into his dark elf form and you will have to battle him. Heal and save your game before fighting him. He is very strong and if you lose without saving first you'll have to redo the Marsh Cave. You can find the Crown on the third floor of the Marsh Cave. Keep your HP up, use Protect often, and continually use Temper on one attacker. He often starts the fight out with the Death spell, which instantly kills its target if successful, so you may lose a random character if you're not lucky. After defeating him, you'll get the Crystal Eye. Return it to Matoya for the Jolt Tonic, which will awake the Elf Prince and get you the Mystic Key. The Mystic Key can unlock some doors like the ones on the third floor of the Marsh Cave, Cornelia Castle, Mt. Duergar and the Chaos Shrine. If you kill him, there is a chance of you getting a certain mythrile weapon.

The Crystal of Earth

Vampire

The Vampire
The Vampire

As the only known resident of the Terra Cave, the Vampire was originally blamed for the rotting of the Earth (which was, in fact, caused by the Lich). In reality, the Vampire merely guarded the entrance to the lower levels of the Terra Cave. The Vampire also owns the Star Ruby.

HP: 156
Gil: 2000
Exp: 1200
Atk: 76
Def: 24
MDef: 75
Strong Against: Quake, Ice, Death, Confusion, Paralysis
Weak Against: Fire, Dia

He resides in the third level of the Terra Cave, and originally is blamed for the rotting of the Earth. He is strong, but it's actually harder to get through the Cave than it is to beat him; just heal before the fight. He is actually very easy to kill since he is weak against both Dia spells and Fire. Have your Mages cast magic while your fighters attack him. He'll go down in a round or two, leaving you the Star Ruby. Walk back out of the cave, through the Titan's Cave, to the Sage's Cave to get the Earth Rod. Then walk all the way back to the Vampire's room and go through the rear door to continue on through the Cave. In the Tower of Mirage and Temple of Chaos, the Vampire will be a random encounter.

Titan

Titan
Titan

The titan lives in a tunnel that allows passage to Sarda, however he will only move out of the way in exchange for the Star Ruby, which is in the possession of the Vampire.

Lich 1

The Lich
The Lich

The Lich took control of the Crystal of Earth 200 years ago, causing the land around Melmond to rot. His army of undead consume the land unchecked, turning the once green fields to rock and marsh.

HP: 400
Gil: 3000
Exp: 2200
Atk: 40
Def: 40
MDef: 120
Strong Against: Ice, Death, Confusion, Paralysis
Weak Against: Fire, Dia, Diara, Firaga

The Lich is the true source of rotting Earth, he is in the fifth basement of the Terra Cave, which can only be accessed after getting the Earth Rod from Sarda. He is strong, but not too bad since he is weak against Fire and Dia spells. When the White Mage isn't healing, have her use Dia. The Red and Black Mages should cast Firaga after using Temper on one of the phyiscal attackers at least twice. Keep using Protect as well and Lich shouldn't be too much of a problem. After defeating him you can restore the Earth Crystal and get the Canoe from the Sages at Crescent Lake.

The Crystal of Fire

Red Dragon

Red Dragon
Red Dragon
HP: 248

MDef: 200
Strong Against: Quake, Fire
Weak Against: None

Guardian of the Fire Armor in the lowest level of Mt. Gulg, and very, very strong. Get to it by going to the west when you get to the fifth basement of the volcano (it's the room where the stairs are in the center and there are rooms in all eight directions). Sadly, it is not weak against ice, so you'll have to rely on physical attacks. Keep your HP high since it can hit for a lot of damage and attack everyone at once. You don't want anyone dying before you get to Marilith. The Red Dragon is a random encounter on the Fire Floor of the Temple of Chaos.

Marilith 1

Marilith
Marilith
 • Original Name: Kali (reference to the Hindu Goddess Kali)

200 years ago Marlilith appeared with the Lich, taking control of the Crystal of Fire in Mt. Gulg.

NES Name: Kary
HP: 600
Gil: 3000
Exp: 2475
Atk: 40
Def: 50
MDef: 183
Strong Against: Bolt, Ice, Fire
Weak Against: Paralysis

The second Fiend, Marilith resides on the lowest level of Mt. Gulg. Her room is directly south of where you fought the Red Dragon (so the southwest room). Protect your party with NulBlaze immediately then work on using Protect or Protera and Temper. She is weak to paralysis, so the Hold spell has a high change of succeeding. Keep your HP high as usual while attacking with mainly physical hits as she resists all three types of black magic you have available. After she dies you can restore the Fire Crystal and warp out of the volcano.

HP: 162
Gil: 3225
Exp: 3225
Atk: 30
Def: 30
MDef: 92
Strong Against: Quake
Weak Against: None

Guardian of the Levistone in the Ice Cavern, but like the last two bosses, the challenge is in getting to it more than it is in beating it. It doesn't have any real weakness, so just hit him with your strongest weapons and spells while casting Protect and Cures. After defeating it you have to walk out of the Ice Cavern and survive a river ride back to your ship. You might want to use a shelter after getting out of the Cavern in case the river enemies kill you. After you get back to your ship, sail to the Lykion Desert (south of Crescent Lake) and use the stone to get your Airship. The Evil Eye is a random encounter in the Flying Fortress.

Strong Against: Quake, Ice, Death, Confusion, Paralysis
Weak Against: Fire, Dia

At the end of the Citadel of Trials you will be attacked by one or two of these dragons when you try to sit on the throne. Like all undead, they can be killed with Dia and Fire spells as well as physical attacks. Just heal beforehand and you shouldn't have a problem. After killing them, sit on the throne to return to the entrance of the Citadel and then head back to Bahamut for your class change. The Dragon Zombies are a random encounter in the Temple of Chaos.

The Crystal of Water

Kraken 1

The Kraken
The Kraken

One of the first Fiends to appear, the Kraken appeared 400 years ago, attacked Onrac and sunk the shrine. After taking control of the Crystal of Water, the Mermaids began to disappear.

HP: 800
Gil: 5000
Exp: 4245
Atk: 50
Def: 60
MDef: 160
Strong Against: Quake, Fire
Weak Against: Bolt

On the lowest level of the Sunken Shrine is the third Fiend, the Kraken. Make sure you go through the upper floor first to get all of the treasure, then leave the Shrine, save, and go through the lower floors. Kraken is significantly stronger than Lich or Marilith, but is weak against Bolt magic. Use the same technique as you did with the other two Fiends: keep your HP up, use Protera on everyone, and Saber on a fighter. After he's gone, restore the Water Crystal and get out of the Shrine.

The Crystal of Air

Blue Dragon

Guardian of the warp room on the third floor of the Tower of Mirage, the Blue Dragon is actually quite easy. Just hit it with physical attacks until it dies, though you may need to heal after the fight. Once it's gone, you can warp to the Flying Fortress (if you have the Warp Cube). The Blue Dragon is a random encounter in the Temple of Chaos.

Warmech

MDef: 200
Strong Against: Quake, Bolt, Death, Ice, Fire, Paralysis, Confusion
Weak Against: None

The secret boss, and the predecessor to the WEAPONs found in the later Final Fantasy games, Warmech is a pain in many ways. First of all, it is only found on the top floor of the Flying Fortress, where it is a rare random encounter. To fight it just keep walking back and forth on the bridge until it shows up. It is stronger than any enemy, including Tiamat. Keep your HP up, use Protera and Invisira a lot, and Saber a Knight at least four times and cast Haste. Keep hitting it, restoring and reviving as necessary, and use Flare if you have a Black Wizard. Eventually it dies and you get a huge load of Exp and Gil (32,000Gil and 32,000Exp). That's it. You may want to kill Tiamat first, leave and save your game, then return to fight Warmech.

Tiamat 1

Tiamat
Tiamat

The most powerful Fiend, Tiamat appeared 400 years ago and took over the Fortress after driving the Lufenians out and seizing the Crystal of Wind.

HP: 1000
Gil: 6000
Exp: 5496
Atk: 49
Def: 80
MDef: 200
Strong Against: Quake, Bolt, Fire, Ice
Weak Against: Break

The last Fiend, Tiamat is located on the top floor of the Flying Fortress. He is strong against all elemental spells, so concentrate on using Saber on your Knight. Also use Protera, NulShock, and Invisira as necessary. He has a lot of HP but goes down quickly against a boosted Knight. Theoretically, he can be killed with the Break spell, but the chance of it actually working is so low you'll kill him in fewer rounds with standard attacks. After you restore the Wind Crystal, you can go back in time from the Temple of Chaos.

MDef: 160
Strong Against: Quake, Ice, Death, Confusion, Paralysis
Weak Against: Fire, Dia

A joke of a boss, the Death Eye guards the entrance to the basement of the Temple of Chaos. Hit him repeatedly, and with any luck he won't even have a chance to attack.

Lich 2

Lich
Lich
HP: 500
Gil: 1
Exp: 2000
Atk: 50

MDef: 140
Strong Against: Ice, Death, Confusion, Paralysis
Weak Against: Fire (NES and PS only), Dia

Located at the end of the first basement (the Earth Floor) of the Temple of Chaos, Lich returns and is stronger than before. Besides more HP, he can now cast Flare, so get ready to heal. As before, use Dia spells (he isn't as weak against Fire as he used to be) along with a Saber'd Knight's attack to kill him quickly.

Marilith 2

HP: 700

Strong Against: Bolt, Ice, Fire
Weak Against: None

At the end of the second basement (Fire Floor) of the Temple of Chaos, Marilith returns, and is basically the same as before, except with more HP. She is still nearly immune to all offensive magic, so you'll have to rely on physical attacks.

Kraken 2

Kraken

HP: 900

Strong Against: Quake, Fire
Weak Against: None

Not surprisingly, Kraken is waiting at the end of the third basement (Water Floor) of the Temple of Chaos. Like Marilith and Lich, he is the same as before except resistant to all magic and has more HP. Again, just use physical attacks to kill him quickly.

Tiamat 2

HP: 1100
Gil: 1

Weak Against: None

Yep, he's back as well and predictably in the fourth basement (Wind Floor) of the Temple of Chaos. Same old, same old - except that he is resistant to Break now, so don't bother trying. Use physical attacks (and make sure you get the Masamune before fighting him). Once he's gone your path to Chaos is clear.

Chaos

Chaos
Chaos

The ultimate evil, Chaos is really the knight Garland who was sent 2000 years into the past by the Four Fiends. Once in the past he sent Tiamat and the Kraken 1600 years into the future and Marilith and the Lich 1800 years into the future. Once there the Fiends took control of the Crystals and then in the present day sent Garland back in time, creating a time loop.

HP: 2000
Gil: 0
Exp: 0
Atk: 100
Def: 100
MDef: 200
Strong Against: Every spell in the game
Weak Against: None
