Smithing is a skill where you can make armour and weapons yourself instead of buying them. It is also one of the most profitable skills in Runescape.
Smelting
First of all, you need to have ores. To get ores, you need to mine (see Runescape's mining skill). Using the ores you have, you must then use them on a furnace to smelt the ores into bars. There are 12 furnaces located throughout Runescape, but only 4 are for free players.
Free Furnaces
Listed below are furnaces available for free players.

| Al-Kharid | Good to use as it's located near a bank. |
| Falador | Good to use as it's located near a bank. |
| Lumbridge | Because it's so far from a bank, only new players use this one. |
| The Wilderness | Located in level 28 wilderness, it's only good for the mines located in the wilderness. |
