Smithing is a skill where you can make armour and weapons yourself instead of buying them. It is also one of the most profitable skills in Runescape.

Smelting

First of all, you need to have ores. To get ores, you need to mine (see Runescape's mining skill). Using the ores you have, you must then use them on a furnace to smelt the ores into bars. There are 12 furnaces located throughout Runescape, but only 4 are for free players.

Free Furnaces

Listed below are furnaces available for free players.

Furnace Location Notes
Al-Kharid Good to use as it's located near a bank.
Falador Good to use as it's located near a bank.
Lumbridge Because it's so far from a bank, only new players use this one.
The Wilderness Located in level 28 wilderness, it's only good for the mines located in the wilderness.

Members Furnaces

Listed below are furnaces available for members. Free players cannot use these furnaces.

Furnace Location Notes
East Ardougne
Entrana Good for making glass as all the materials are on the island.
Keldagrim
Lost City You need to have completed the quest Lost City to enter.
Port Phasmatys Closest furnace to a bank in the game. It helps to complete the Ghosts Ahoy quest and to wear an amulet of Ghostspeak.
Rellekka Usable after completing the quest The Fremennik Trials.
Shilo Village Very close to a bank but players must pay 20 gold every time they want to use it.
Tyras Camp

Smelting Table

When you've found a good furnace, you must then smelt your ores into bars. This can be done by either using the ores with the furnace, or clicking on the furnace and indicating how many bars you want, which is much faster than always clicking on your ores and then on the furnace.

However, you need certain levels to smelt ores into bars. Listed below is a smelting table with levels. "Lvl Needed" means level needed to smelt ores.

Ore(s) Lvl Needed Produces Exp Earned Notes
1 copper ore and 1 tin ore 1 1 bronze bar 6.5
1 iron ore 15 1 iron bar 12.5 Smelting iron ores has a 50% chance of success. For example, if you have 28 iron ores, about 14 will be smelted into bars. However, if you have a Ring of Forging (members only), you have a 100% chance of success for a short while.
1 elemental ore and 4 coal ores 20 1 elemental bar 18 Useful for crafting elemental shields (members only) after completing the quest Elemental Workshop.
1 silver ore 20 1 silver bar 13.5 Used for crafting.
1 iron ore and 2 coal ores 30 1 steel bar 17.5 The most used bars for smithing.
1 gold ore 40 1 gold bar 22.5 Used for crafting. If you have the Goldsmithing gauntlets from the quest Family Crest, you get 56.5 exp per bar.
1 mithril ore and 4 coal ores 50 1 mith bar 30
1 adamant ore and 6 coal ores 70 1 adamant bar 37.5
1 rune ore and 8 coal ores 85 1 rune bar 50

Smithing

Now that you have your bars, you will need a hammer and an anvil. Hammers can be bought from General Stores and anvils are found across Runescape. It's faster if you smelt all your ores and then smith them, instead of smelting 28 ores and then smithing them. However, you need levels to smith items.

Use your bars with the anvil. A menu will pop up and ask you what you want to make. If you right click, you can smith 5 or 10 of what you want. When you smith, your character will hammer the bar on the anvil and produce your item.

A good spot to smith is in Varrock. At the west bank, just south of it is a house with anvils. Here you can quickly take out your bars from the bank, smith them with your hammer, and then bank them and repeat.

List below are tables with information about levels needed to produce weapons and armour.

Making Money

If your magic level is 55 (see Magic) and your smithing level is 48, then you can easily make money from smithing.

All you have to do is make steel plates and then high level alchemy them. Each steel plate you high level alchemy gives you 1200 gp. Since steel plates are easy to make, this is easy money. However, you need to have many nature runes if you want to do this.

It is not recommended that you sell what you made to General Stores, as they give you cheap prices. Instead, high level alchemy them. If your magic level is not 55, then you have no choice but to either sell to stores or to players.

You can also sell your bars or ores for a profit. Coal and iron are always in demand, so these ores can give you good money. Steel bars are always in demand too, and selling them gives a great profit.

Training

There isn't really a good way to train smithing. However, many players prefer to make steel plates, as they are easy to make and give good exp. This is a good way to get your smithing all the way to level 99.
