Smithing is one of the many skills in RuneScape. It involves smelting (creating metal bars from certain ores) or the smithing itself, where the bars are used to make armor (eg, plate mail, plate legs, chain mail, large helm, etc), weapons (eg, sword, longsword, dagger, etc) or tools (woodcut axe, nails (steel only), etc). At almost every new level, players will be able to make something new due to the large amounts of smithing possibilities and only 99 levels. Smithing is a skill in conjunction to Mining, where the ores are mined with the mining skill, and then smelted, and then smithed.

Smithing is quite an expensive skill if one wishes to raise it quickly, as the bars must be bought, and (at lower levels) the returns are usually much less than the money spent on bars. However, if the ores are mined and smelted, the profits are decent once players can smith items such as Adamant Scimitars or Adamant Kites.

To smith something, a player must have a hammer (can be bought from general stores) in their inventory, as well as a bar (Bronze, Iron, Steel, etc). The player must use the bar on the anvil (Anvils are found in many places, see below for more) which then brings up a new screen showing all the possible items which can be smithed with that bar. If you do not have the required level, the item will be faded (unable to click it), and if you do not have the required number of bars, the name of that item will be red and you will be unable to click it. Players can smith automatically by right clicking on the item they wish to smith, and choosing 'Smith 1', 'Smith 5' or 'Smith 10', which is quite handy.

Anvils are places which smithers must go in order to smith their bars. There are many places they can be found, the most popular places being: -Varrok West Anvil: directly under Varrok West Bank making it a prime location for people who want to smith a lot. -Yanille Anvil: also near bank, less popular as the one in Varrok West due to the fact that Yanille is harder to reach.
