Alliances are large groups of combat and non-combat clans. Alliances generally have an attack-defence force and resource workforce composed of these clans.

In general, Alliances are led by the leader of the dominant clan. Orders are distributed by email to clan leaders.

Until recently, the largest alliance on RuneScape was the Chaos Alliance - a megagroup composed of 77 clans and roughly 9,000 players, grouped together under one general, a paying member known as Red Echidna0. However, during Red Echidna0's absence, a rebellion arose within the Alliance, fracturing it.

About a month later, the Alliance was reformed, with the new members being the Chaos Shamans (the old Alliance's dominant clan, led by Red Echidna0) and the Order of Dragons (also an Alliance old guard, led by Jarmatus). This new reborn Chaos Alliance is currently in its pre-planning stages.
