Hello, Mobility

I would be happy to know two things. I may sound direct behind words but this talk page setup can be confusing. There is a project I would like to start, one for making the walkthroughs, wikis, or etc./game-lists offline and e-reader friendly. This may be hard work but if it can be made systematic than this can be portable-friendly for all digital readers. I apologize if I pointed out punctuation errors in the wrong way; truth is, in December I had to grade loads of reports from my Irish students, and they were full of grammar mistakes: in that case, it was my duty to point out their errors. I'm sorry I got carried away here, I didn't mean any harm, and I know I should not bring home work problems nor vice versa. By the way, my philosophy is always: "if you make a mistake, I tell you with no hard feelings, and if I make a mistake, please tell me with no hard feelings as well", although sometimes I stray from it, but that's a mistake that I accept gladly to be told! About your tip

Thank you for the tip; I actually misread the last contribution timestamp (I don't know how I could manage to misread that, I guess I just "read" 2013 and stopped).

Looking for maps in Gauntlet is a bit hard because "gauntlet level maps" are too common words: and when I do find maps, they're probably from a different version or just include the walls (no enemies, treasures, keys, or anything else). Anyways, since that date, I found a way to generate the complete maps (up to spawn points for all players), I'm currently tweaking it to make the task easier.

(It's based on stitching screenshots, of course, but I could edit the MAME cheats so enemies wouldn't move and I could pan the camera just how I like it. I'll upload the method to my user page.)

Area maps

Hello there,

Thank you very much pour your Pokémon B/R/Y walkthrough, which I found very instructive and complete.

I would like to know how you obtained the maps of the areas in the game, with all the sprites in it (for example, the map of Viridian Forest). Did you use a kind of tool to extract it from the game ROM ?

Hi Drake, I actually just used publicly available maps which were generated on several Japanese websites, and modified them for use with the guide. I believe there are a few map ripping tools available for B/R/Y, but I have never used them before. I simply searched the web for maps which were not watermarked or claimed by any particular author. Yeah, I found some map editing tools but I could only have the maps with no sprites on it (no characters, items etc), so they seemed empty (I wanted the maps mostly for a nostalgic and collecting purpose). As you say, I will just search through the web to find already existing ripped maps, that should be simpler. Anyway, thanks again for your great work with this walkthrough !

Final Fantasy/Weapons: sentence complexity

Let me add this: just a couple of years ago I played for the first time Dragon Quest 4 (NES), where the characters have artificial intelligence. Thus I discovered the spellcasting weapons and the great usefulness of debuff spells, and this revolutioned my playing experience. Reading game guides, I seemed to understand that these two aspects are largely ignored by most players, who instead seem to focus just on dealing damage and healing. I therefore try to expand everyone's playing experience by highlighting these facts (I mean spellcasting weapons and debuff spells). Does it make things complicated? Duplicate Uploads

What happens, I see, is as soon as the new file is uploaded, it shows the old one as what was uploaded. So I tried again, and it still happened. I then realized this was the browser cache, and reloading made the new one appear; so I tried reverting, not realizing this would leave multiple copies of the file. So if you could delete those, at least the middle three. No sense to keep all those duplicates.Eric B (talk) 18:10, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

I'm on thin ice

Hi Procyon. I expected that, I felt insulted and I overreacted. From now on I'll limit myself to editing guide content and I'll refrain from editing grammar, as I can't see which grammar rules are ok and which ones are to be taken easy.

But can I explain myself? The day before I just agreed with Moydow about that one edit, but then Paco wrote "we're not in school" and "your special grammar rules". From my point of view, that's an insult. First of all, because it's insulting schools, and second because that edit followed a codified grammar rule that was written down in grammar books. I accept the new grammar convention, as I said, and I'm not going to question grammar anymore, but I feel that Paco's words were unfair. Please tell me if I am over-sensitive. Table sort

Hi Procyon. I usually put the sortable flag in most tables, I simply forgot about it lately. By the way, I never knew the names of monsters, that's why I never sort them by name. If I'm a minority, I just learned it now, so I have no problem changing trend. I'm using Chrome on Windows 7. The thing is, I usually get it back by pressing the forward button, but this time it didn't work for some reason. It told me I lost session data and wouldn't let me get it back. I just ended up starting over from scratch. This time, I was really unlucky. Quick image edit?

Hey Proc, an anon found an error in one of your Final Fantasy maps. See this diff. I was able to verify this in the NES version, see this vid at 14:40. I also checked the GBA version (with a different map/tileset) - it also reaches that floor at the bottom right corner (where D is on the map, but should be "C"). Athena - a big thank you

Hi,

I'd like to personally thank you for the amazing effort you have put into the Athena FAQ. I've been trying to master this game for maybe 15 years, and its only been a year since I could even get off the FIRST LEVEL the game is so hard!

I recently spent £300 importing the arcade pcb from Japan and finally with this FAQ I feel I might be able to understand the mechanics behind this rare and weirdly playable game. If more than four people had ever heard of this title then perhaps there would be greater information on this game out there...

Adventure Island flower sprites

Thanks for uploading the white one. However, given the strategy for coyotes, it sounds like there are one or two brown flower sprites that should be included on the enemy page so that we can visually distinguish which flowers indicate what. Thoughts? I can re-upload the first version of the flower you made. I assume that is the main brown flower. I suppose, if you really feel like doing it. The thing is, it's not really an "item" as in it's not collectible. It's only a visual indication. As far as I can tell, the only difference between the normal coyote flower and the jumping coyote flower is the color of the stem. I think Akumaxx's screenshot could suffice. Original Japanese Titles vs. American

If a title is originally released in Japan, we have usually made that title the one of the guide here at StrategyWiki, though Prod's move of Shadow Land from its original title, Youkai Douchuuki, goes along with our style of being English-centric. Though we have a standardized way of romanizing Japanese titles, if that title feels uncommon to the original guide creator, then they would use the American title that they are used to. Simply put, American titles usually become our guide titles because that is what was played by the guide creator (who is assumed to be American). However, to be objective we would normally stick with the Japanese title. I don't have a preference, but it is a point of argument for Namcorules who wants Youkai Douchuuki to have its name be the primary one. F/A is a similar example, although I prefer the American title to overcome the mediawiki flaw with having "/" in a title's name. What I'm getting at is we should decide on whether the original Japanese name should be our standard, or if the primary English name should be our standard. Our options:

  1. Original name centric (chronologically centric)
  2. English centric

Either option is fine. I feel like we have been mixed so far, so I want to define it on SW:Guide's main page article regarding naming (will link later). I don't have a preference, though my bias is towards whatever version I have played - usually English centric. --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 22:19, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

It's a very good question, I have a personal preference for option 2, but there are (very few) occasions when option 1 seems more practical, particularly when the game is obscure in either language. A lot of the games that Namcorules covers only make it big in Japan. They are released in North America with some American sounding name tacked on, but don't succeed, so even if you used the American name, nobody would really be familiar with it.
All that being said, my "when in doubt" solution is to look at Wikipedia. Wikipedia goes with both wp:Shadow Land over wp:Youkai Douchuuki (and wp:Yōkai Dōchūki), and they chose wp:Fighter & Attacker over wp:F/A. By in large, I think we should agree with them as much as possible since, presumably, they've chosen the term which is most likely the most frequently used search term. The only issue is... Zelda: A Link to the Past

On Zelda: A Link to the Past I can't get past dark world level 5 because the block that I push off can't be pushed over the tile with the button for some reason. Level 5 in Dark World is the lake and ice level. I can only push the block once, but in order to move it over the tile with the button I need to push it three times. What is going on? Mega Man

The issue is that it's a four boss run, without any healing. Ice Man is the most powerful of the Robot Masters in terms of attack power, and is deadly on his own. The player will have already fought Bomb Man and Fire Man, and will likely be injured, and they need to have enough health to survive Guts Man afterwards. It doesn't make any sense to suggest a skill-based strategy in that circumstance, since failing to dodge leads to taking a lot of damage. The thing about the Robot Masters' stages is that you don't need to have mastered the strategy for beating them in order to defeat them, you just need to win once to clear their stage. In my case, I took a break from the game for a week or two after beating the Robot Masters since Yellow Devil was a major pain, and then came back and finished it off, so fighting Ice Man was hardly fresh (I was playing on the 3DS, which allows me to suspend play). I get that if you put a lot of time into building the skills to fight Ice Man, you're going to feel that you should use them, but there isn't any reason whatsoever to do that the second time round, since once you've killed him you can flee the scene. --Poppy Appletree (talk) 04:28, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

Pokemon red world map

Because it was redundant to the content already available on the site. Maps for all locations are available on the pages which reference them. Why would we ask users to visit a different site and switch back and forth between windows and tabs when all of the information is cleanly presented on one page? We're not a showcase for other site's features, no matter how cool they may be. Off-site linking should only occur if the content is out of scope for the site. Procyon 00:26, 6 March 2014 (UTC)

About me

I love and, to some extent, am addicted to video games. I enjoy gathering data for them just as much (maybe even more).

I perform all of my edits by hand. The most automated processes I rely on are copy/paste, some regular expressions and the find functions within Firefox or IE. I am currently trying to experiment with AutoWikiBrowser using my bot, Notmybot.

History

In November, 2006, I was writing articles on Wikipedia for Gunster: Rain of Bullets and non-video game topics when I noticed that "game guide information" was not allowed on Wikipedia. I panicked and, seeking refuge for my work, found GameInfo at Wikia (where I dumped some of my contributions) and then later StrategyWiki. Since SW had an active community and a much more original skin and organization, it had me hooked.

Interaction with the wiki

I most often work with monitoring MapleStory edits. I also spend a lot of time copy editing the content of guides, creating new article pages, setting up guides for others, solving editing problems, and contributing what I can remember from playing games ("walkthrough dumps"). I also work with screenshots, image touch ups and transparency, content verification, inquiry (clarifications and suggestions), helping discuss community issues, and handling (pun intended) vandalism.

Current studies

I am currently enrolled in a university where I am pursuing an undergraduate management degree program with a minor in information technology. I hope to grow in my ability to apply these concepts, especially to StrategyWiki and other communities.

My gaming history

Although I am relatively young, I grew up playing NES and Atari games, and I still have many if not all of my NES carts (my brothers and I went through maybe 4 systems but none survived). PC games were also a big thing, since my brother purchased a Pentium 400 or something that I used to play Commander Keen games, Scorched Earth, and Warcraft: Orcs and Humans on. Eventually I killed that computer (probably by formatting it) and we got a newer one later which I used to play Ascendancy, Civilization, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, and The Secret of Monkey Island on (all of which I sucked at). I also remember watching my brothers play some of the first online video games, such as "Tomato Wars", an ascii dodgeball game that looked like a single room from Adventure (for Atari), but with stick figures.

I think I was 8 or so before I got my SNES (it was like $115 used with several games), which I still have (yet it's now broken, and I will soon find a FC Twin to replace it). I was given Shadow Run as part of the bundle, however because I was quite young and impatient, I went and traded it for Secret of Mana; a great trade indeed (although I had to pay an extra $20 or so during the exchange). I feel bad for getting rid of that game though. I have only traded/sold around five games in my life and I have regretted every single exchange. Unrelated: I remember writing an "essay" in the third grade where I wrote about skateboarding safety equipment themed from the sprites and items present in Secret of Mana... wow.

When I turned 11, 5th grade, I rented an N64 and had a party with a couple of friends, playing GoldenEye 007 and Star Fox 64 throughout the night. That December my cousins and my brothers received an N64 to be split between us. After several years of swapping my family ended up with the system (which I still have).

Around the age of 14 I got a GameCube for my birthday with Luigi's Mansion.

At the age of 16 I got a student Visa with a low limit. Thus the ability to purchase things online was now mine. I went on a Genesis rampage and now have 2-3 consoles, about 10 controllers, several crazy adapters, a 32X without a connector cable, a Menacer Rifle, about 8 Sonic the Hedgehog 2 cartridges, and many other games.

I recently acquired a PlayStation, and am borrowing (for a very long time) a PlayStation 2 (one that cannot play PSX games, so I am glad to have both systems).

Now I spend most of my time playing free games, or games on Steam.

"The Hot Q: Grand Theft Auto 4
...It's something I get asked about a lot (thanks for the E-mails, guys - you know who you are). It's Grand Theft Auto 4, and prepare yourselves for a whopper of a rumor, folks. Here goes: The just-announced Grand Thef Auto: Vice City is just the beginning of what will become known as the GTA Universe. After Vice City, the next Grand Theft Auto game will be dubbed "Crime Online." And if you haven't guessed by now, it's going to be the first console-networked title in the series. There will be a new stand-alone GTA as well, but that's still a ways off..." --Q-Mann, EGM August 2002.

8Bit transformation

"Hi Aniki! I've used the same technique on Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, and Galaxian. I discovered the technique to making them when I discovered this page on a video-game blog: http://iconfactory.com/freeware/preview/arcd I saw it and set about figuring out how to recreate the effect. I can teach you exactly how I do it (which may or may not necessarily be how Gedeon Maheux developed them, although I've been in contact with him and he said they're very close.) I use GIMP 2.2

  1. Start with the original sprite, and scale it 7x
  2. Duplicate the sprite in a new layer and shift it to the right 7 pixels. Darken the new layer through the Brightness and Contrast tool (I darken it by -96)
  3. Duplicate the sprite yet again in another layer, but only shift it one pixel to the right. Brighten this layer with the Brightness and Contrast tool (I brighten it by 127.) This layer goes between the original and the dark version.
  4. Now it gets a bit tricky. Select the transparent space (or background color) around the sprite in the original layer. I hit Shift+Q to show the selection mask, then I push it over to the left by one pixel. Hit Shift+Q again to go back to the selection mode and press Ctrl-X to chop off the rightmost pixels. This exposes a little more of the lighter pixels underneath on the right side.
  5. Again, select the transparent space around the sprite in the original layer. Now invert the selection so you're only selecting the sprite. Create a new layer, and choose the gradiant tool with a gradiant that goes from black to white. With the area over the sprite selected, create gradiant straight across the sprite. When you're done, select that layer in the layer dialog, and choose "Grain Merge" and set the opacity to 50% to soften the effect.
  6. Lastly, you want to sample the transparent space around the entire image (check the "Sample Merged" checkbox.) Pick one of the dominant colors of the sprite, and darken it substantially. Fill the transparent area with the dark color, and then shrink the selection by 4, and feather it by 2.0, then press Ctrl-X to cut it and create the dark border around the entire picture, and viola.

  • SW Japanese Romanization simply follows the romanization of their hiragana constituents. In the case of Kanji, refer to the On'yomi readings to break it down to where the vowels can be pieced together. Sometimes a Japanese dictionary is necessary to determine which reading is appropriate to the context of its use. E.g. if you know what the word means in English, find the reading for the character that matches that translation (e.g. for Senpuukyaku, puu can appear as pu or puu, but puu is the word that means air, which matches the whirlwind kick translation).
  • For Genpei Touma Den series games:
    • 源 -> げん (gen) -> gen
    • 平 -> へい (hei) -> ぺい (pei) -> pei

      • Arbitrary cultural version -> おおずもう -> Oozumou (this is the one used by professional sumo wrestling)

Templates

  • {{paddedfloat}}: used to center text under a walkthrough link.
  • {{im}}: for in-line images. Best used as a base for a guide-specific clone. Most notable clones are {{im/oot}}, {{im/loz}}, and {{im/mmx}}., I know they do, I was just trying to exclude the use of the Template:T:Sidebar for only Crystal-exclusive information, much like how you're highlighting the instances of Super Mario Advance information. In that particular edit, the sidebox a) wasn't about information exclusive to Crystal and b) wasn't about anything that wasn't mentioned elsewhere (in the items section) and that the player couldn't figure out on their own anyhow. Picross e series naming conventions

Hi Proc, I need some help. Jupiter corporation lists their games on their site with the following typeset format: PICROSS e#. Standard naming conventions for titles would display it as Picross E#.
