Some routes are actually waterways! You'll need a Pokémon in your party that can Surf, plus a Grass-type and an Electric-type to deal with the Trainers you'll meet along the way. It's a long surf to Cianwood City—make sure your Pokémon are fit to travel.
Route features[edit]
Uncover a Shuckle[edit]
If you use Rock Smash on the cracked rocks at the beach, you may uncover a Krabby or a Shuckle. Shuckle can be tricky to catch, so you may want to wait for the freebie in Cianwood City.
Miss Monday[edit]
If you skip work and hit the beach on a Monday, the oldest day sibling, Monica, will give you the Sharp Beak, which powers up Flying-type attacks.
Water Trainers aplenty[edit]
All of the trainers found along these routes are Water-types, so bring lots of Electric and Grass Pokémon. Or just avoid them—Swimmers never carry much cash.
Whirl Island[edit]
You probably won't have HM 06 the first time you pass Whirl Island, and without it, you can't get very far there. The Legendary Lugia lives here, but you'll need to come back with HM 06 to get past the whirlpools, and the Silver Feather to get to Lugia. For more information, see the Whirl Islands page. Instead, follow the left edge of the fence and eventually, you will reach Cianwood City.

This Rock/Bug Pokémon has the highest Defense and Special Defense in the game, and the worst Attack, Special Attack, and Speed. It doesn't naturally learn any good moves, but if you use TM's to teach it stuff like Toxic, Curse, or Sandstorm, you'll have a nasty little combo on your hands. Here's a weird trick: Make Shuckle hold a Berry, use Shuckle in battle, and the Berry turns into Berry Juice (which heals 20 HP). | Mantine is a Water/Flying Pokémon that can learn one decent attack each in the Normal, Water, and Flying types. It can be taught all three Water HM's (and it's a good idea to do so), but not Fly, which is a shame. It has an unusually high Special Defense. And yes, that's a little Remoraid attached to its wing. |
