As you approach your rival will battle you:
When you find the charcoal maker's apprentice, he tells you that his {{bp|Farfetch'd}} with Cut has gotten away, but he's too scared to look for it. Go a bit further along the path and talk to the Farfetch'd. It will run away. When you can get in front of the Pokémon, do so, and talk to it again; it will run back the way it came. When it gets back to the apprentice, talk to the charcoal maker, who has appeared; he will give you '''HM01''' (Cut).

Now you need to find the apprentice to get HM01, go north east, talk to him, now to get the Farfetch'd you need to go south and follow the path and talk to the Pokémon, follow it and talk until it goes to the Apprentice, the master will be there and will give you CUT! 
 
Now teach Cut to a Pokémon, and cut down the tree to the north and east of the apprentice. Just beyond it, you will see the shrine to the protector of the Forest. Make your way around the woods. There are many Items that you can't see here, so press A at any dead ends to see if there is an Item there. The green-haired kid in the woods will give you TM02 (Headbutt) if you talk to him. There is a gate house at the northern end of the Forest leading to [[Pokémon Gold and Silver/Route 34|Route 34]]. Inside, a lady behind a counter will give you Sweet Scent (TM12).
