There are quite a few Trainers on Route 44, and they're using a variety of Pokémon, including Water-, Flying-, Rock- and Fire-types. You should do very well against all comers if you bring along an Electric-type and a Water-type.

Talk to the Fisherman
This area, east of Mahogany, is home to the gun-shaped yet oddly adorable Remoraid in Gold and Silver. And unless you want to spend all day fishing on the off chance that you'll catch one of these bizarre, rare little fish, you'll want to wait for a swarm. Talk to Wilton (in the upper right corner of the right pond) and he'll keep you well-informed about the Remoraid activity.
There is no Remoraid in Pokémon Crystal, so there's no point asking Wilton to keep you posted on swarm activity. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't trade phone numbers anyway. Wilton will call you in the future when he fishes up Poké Balls and other items.
Rare Grass Pokémon Aplenty
The thin strip of grass in this area is easy to miss. That's a shame, since it has a super-rare Max Revive, and is the only place you'll ever find a Lickitung. (Tangelas are less rare, but you might as well grab one early.)
