The charcoal maker will give you HM01 (Cut)

When you find the charcoal maker's apprentice, he tells you that his Farfetch'd with Cut has gotten away, but he's too scared to look for it. Go a bit further along the path and talk to the Farfetch'd. It will run away. When you can get in front of the Pokémon, do so, and talk to it again; it will run back the way it came. When it gets back to the apprentice, talk to the charcoal maker, who has appeared; he will give you HM01 (Cut).

Teach Cut to one of your Pokémon, and cut down the tree to the north and east of the apprentice. Just beyond it, you will see the shrine to the protector of the Forest. Make your way around the woods. There are many Items that you can't see here, so press A at any dead ends to see if there is an Item there. The green-haired kid in the woods will give you TM02 (Headbutt) if you talk to him. There is a gate house at the northern end of the Forest leading to Route 34. Inside, the lady behind the counter on the right will give you Sweet Scent (TM12).
