Note: Norman uses very strong normal type Pokemon. He also uses a move called '''facade''', this move doubles in strength if the foe is paralysed/poisoned/burned.
When you have beaten Norman he will give you the Balance Badge and TM42 (Facade), you will also be able to get HM03 (Surf) and use it after you have beaten Norman.

Petalburg City is the first large city you cross on your journey. It's also the first one to have a gym, although you are not able to battle there before you have the first four gym badges. Here you meet your second rival, Wally. Upon arriving in Petalburg City you should visit the PokéMart in order to replenish any used Poké Balls and stock up on Potions. Also a quick stop in the Pokémon Center to heal your Pokémon would not be a bad idea.
Max Revive - Surf across the patch of water at the top of the city
Ether - Surf across the patch of water at the bottom of the city
Rare Candy - Hidden in the patch of grass across form the Ether
HM 03 Surf - Get this from Wally's Uncle after you beat your father in the 5th gym
Events
This is where you meet Wally for the first time in your father's gym, which you need to do before you move on. If you try passing through town instead, a citizen will stop you and direct you to the gym. When you meet Wally in the gym, you will be shown the procedure to capture Pokémon.
This is also where you fight your father in the 5th gym, but only after you get the first 4 badges.
Petalburg Gym
Once you have 4 other badges you will be able to challenge Norman In the Petalburg Gym. The gym is divided into a ladder with one trainer in each room. You have to beat a trainer on the level before you can advance to the next level. Each trainer (except Norman) has only one pokemon. Each trainer gives their pokemon an item on their very first turn (the item being decided by what room they are in). Although the pokemon are not hard by themselves each room provides a different challenge because of the item that their trainers give them. You can go back and fight another trainer if you wish but you would first need to unlock that room form the lower level.
