Shiny pokémon are different colored pokémon, the chance of getting them is small though, being 1 in 8192. when you reach the lake of rage, you will battle a shiny Gyarados, which is red rather than its original blue, for example. their appearance in the game is nought more than for fun, and people usually see one shiny in the wild per cartridge, so unless you're facing a stationary pokemon, dont expect to find a shiny varsion of it, and even to get a shiny from a stationary pokemon, the time can range from a few minutes to a few months.
