Littleroot is a small village located in southern Hoenn. At the start you pick your name and gender and arrive in a moving truck outside your new house. Once you enter your house your mother will ask you to set your clock in your room upstairs; the time you enter will affect several events in the game. Activate the PC in the corner using A and withdraw the Potion. You can read the manual next to the PC if you wish; it explains how to save your game.

Travel to your rival's house next to meet him/her. Activate the Poké Ball in your rival's room to initiate dialogue. Afterwards head towards Route 101. Here, you will meet Professor Birch being chased by a wild Pokémon. His bag is fallen nearby. Click A and open it to find three Pokémon - Treecko, Torchic and Mudkip, in their Poké Balls. Select one and save Birch; the Pokémon will stay with you throughout the game.

You are choosing a Pokémon that is your first one. It will be your strongest (if desired) Pokémon for most of the game. Torchic will have difficulty in the first Gym battle unless it evolves, but remember that these starters are not found anywhere else in the game, which has very few Fire Pokémon but many Water and Grass Pokémon. Mudkip has a dual weakness to grass; this will make battling your rival tough (unless you teach Mudkip Ice Beam). Anyway, all starters are good and will finally evolve into strong Pokémon.

After saving Professor Birch, return to his lab in Littleroot to receive the Pokédex and 5 Poké Balls from May and head for your house to receive the Running Shoes from Mom. Now you have the Shoes you can hold B to run at twice your walking speed. Now head to Oldale Town.
Now's a good time to meet some of the locals.  Travel to your rival's house next door to meet him/her. Activate the Poké Ball in your rival's room to initiate dialogue. Click A and open it to find three Pokémon - Treecko, Torchic and Mudkip, in their Poké Balls.
You can get any of the starters but Mudkip is good at most gyms.

Meet your Rival
Mudkip and Treecko are very well equipped to take out the first gym leader with ease, but Torchic will have difficulty in the first Gym battle unless it evolves. Remember that these starters are not found anywhere else in the game, which has very few Fire Pokémon but many Water and Grass Pokémon.  Mudkip has a dual weakness to grass; this will make battling your rival tough (unless you teach Mudkip Ice Beam).  Select one of the three Pokémon and battle the wild level 2 Poochyena (Zigzagoon in Emerald). After the battle, Professor Birch will give the Pokémon you chose to you as a gift.
Two identical houses are opposite each other in Littleroot Town- the left is Norman's House and the right is Prof. Birch's House. No matter which gender character you choose you will end up in Norman's House. At the beginning of the game you are forced to meet your rival in Prof. Birch's House. Might as well be friendly- I guess.

After you beat your rival (May or Brendan) in Route 103, go back to Prof. Birch's Lab. Prof. Birch will give the pokedex and your rival will give you your first five Poké Balls. Now that you can record and catch the wild pokémon you can find, your adventure really begins.

After you obtain the pokédex and your 5 Poké Balls go back home and talk to your mom. The first time you talk to her she'll give you the Running Shoes. These speedy shoes allow you to go lots faster than usual when you press the B button. The next time you talk to your mom she'll heal all of your pokémon- this comes in handy a lot.

Professor Birch wants you to go meet your Rival at Route 103, north of Oldale Town. Simply head north until you reach Oldale Town, where it would be wise to heal your new Pokémon Center. Once you have done so, continue north into Route 103 where you will find your rival. Use the chart to the left to determine which Pokémon your Rival will have. His/her Pokémon will be level 5. Just keep using your basic Tackle and it should go down.  If you run into trouble, use the potion you retrieved from your PC to replenish your Pokémon's hit points.  Winning will net you 300.

It's your Lucky Day!
Head back to Littleroot Town and visit Professor Birch in his lab. He will give you a Pokédex, a nifty item that records the Pokémon you've seen and caught. If you have seen a particular Pokémon you would like to catch, the Pokédex can tell you where you can find it!  Your rival will also be there and will give you five Pokéballs. Now you can catch Pokémon on your own and buy additional Pokéballs from the Pokémart.
After defeating your dad, Norman, go back to your house and your mum will be there. Go talk to her and she will give you the Amulet Coin. The Amulet Coin allows you to earn twice the amount of money from the people you defeat. For more information on the Amulet Coin see the held item section.

To the Battle Tower
Now there is nothing left to do but to begin your journey to become a Pokémon Master!  Head back north to Oldale Town. On the way out, your Mom will stop you and give you a pair of Running Shoes. Now you can hold B to run in dungeons and outside at twice the speed of your walk. This will save a lot of time!
After beating the Elite Four and you reappear at your house- there's your dad again. Why's he there this time? Why to give you the S.S. Ticket, of course. Now you can go to the Battle Tower.
