Petalburg City is the first city you cross on your journey. It's also the first one to have a gym, although you are not able to battle there until you have four gym badges. Here you meet your second rival, Wally. Upon arriving in Petalburg City you should visit the PokéMart in order to replenish any used Pokéballs and stock up on Potions. Also a quick stop in the Pokécenter to heal your Pokémon would not be a bad idea.

Meet Wally
|colspan="2"|First Half of Game
Once in Petalburg City, you can walk into the Gym and talk to your dad. He'll tell you a little about battling Gym Leaders, and that he won't battle you yet because you're too weak. You will be able to battle him when you have four badges. At this point, a boy named Wally will walk in, saying that he wants a Pokémon, and Norman will lend him a Zigzagoon. You will then see a demo on how to catch a wild Pokémon by watching Wally catch a Ralts.
|-

|Poké Ball
After Wally returns the Zigzagoon and leaves with his new Ralts, Norman will then tell you that you should head for City/ to the north-west and battle the Leader there. You'll have to head west of Petalburg City and onto 104 (South)/.

If you're playing Emerald, you will encounter Scott for the first time as you are exiting Petalburg City. He recognizes you as a Pokémon Trainer, but doesn't feel that you are worthy yet for what he was going to ask.

Return to the City
|-
Once you've returned to Petalburg City after defeating Flannery, a few things will have changed. For starters, the Pokémart's recieved a delivery of new items, and secondly, you can actually challenge the gym here now.

* ? - Surf across the patch of water at the bottom of the city
* HM 03 Surf - Get this from Wally's Uncle after you beat your father in the 5th gym

* This is where you meet Wally for the first time in your father's gym, which you need to do before you move on.  If you try passing through town instead, a citizen will stop you and direct you to the gym.  When you meet Wally in the gym, you will be shown the procedure to capture Pokémon.
* This is also where you fight your father in the 5th gym, but only after you get the first 4 badges.
