Calibrating the lightning rod towers becomes available during Chapter 2 and is available until Chapter 3. Speak to the Al Bhed technician during Chapter 2 to begin the mini-game. You must then find each of the 10 towers and examine them to begin calibrating them. Calibrating all the towers at least once will reward you with the Samurai's Honor Garment Grid.
The towers are easier in the southern area of the Thunder Plains and increase in difficulty as you move to the towers further to the north. Press to examine an tower and begin. You must then enter a series of 30 randomly generated commands to successfully complete the calibration. If you miss 3 times, the calibration fails and you must start over. You can check your progress by speaking the technician at the Thunder Plains Travel Agency.
There are three game types to calibrate the towers, divided by each of the three girls. Simple Calibration is run by Rikku, Falling Calibration is run by Paine, and Memory Calibration is run by Yuna.
During this type of calibration, button commands are flashed on the screen one at a time. You have a short amount of time to press that command before it is counted as a miss. The speed at which the commands appear, speeds up around the 13th turn. Towers toward the northern end of the Thunder Plains may require two commands to be entered at once.
|Tower Number||Command Button Position||Commands Required||Possible Commands|
|1||Middle of the screen||1|
|4||Randomly on the screen||1|
|7||Randomly on the screen||2+|
During this type calibration a string of three button icons will fall down the screen from the top. About halfway down, one of those buttons will flash. You must press the corresponding button before the line disappears. The rate at which the buttons fall increases as you play.

During this type of calibration, a set of buttons will appear on the screen. You must memorize them. The set of buttons will disappear and you must now input those buttons in the same order as you saw them. On the last tower, the order you input them is switched.
