Map of the Lower Shadowlands

Upper Shadowlands

The exit to the upper Shadowlands is in a clearing at the north end of the lower Shadowlands.

A path exits the clearing to the southwest, turning south and ending at an intersection where three Wookiee corpses lie slain and the only remaining survivor, Grrrwahrr, duels a Mandalorian while two others watch:

Grrrwahrr: Raargh!

Grrrwahrr kills the Mandalorian, and the other two now engage him in combat. You can help him with the Hidden Hunters, although he's invulnerable and may kill them both all by himself while the rest of the Shadowlands are explored (although all remaining Mandalorians can be sought and destroyed as you travel towards the Star Map to the southwest).

Star Map: Kashyyyk

Journal Entry Added Star Map: Kashyyyk
Having the reclusive Jolee Bindo in your group has allowed you to access the Lower Shadowlands and continue your search for the Star Map.

If you take the southeast path and encounter Freyyr, the Wookiee that Chuundar sent you to kill, before acquiring the Star Map, he can point you in the right direction if you spare him long enough to return and ask him about it:

Freyyr: I've never heard of such a thing... but there is something odd down here. A large computer installation. It's probably just some Czerka cast-off, but you may find something useful. I can't figure it out, myself. It is northwest of here. I gave up on it years ago.
Journal Entry Added Star Map: Kashyyyk
There is a strange computer in the lower Shadowlands, northwest of Freyyr, that may hold a clue as to where the Star Map may be found.

He means you should go up the path to the northwest, then take the only remaining path into the lower Shadowlands at the intersection where Grrrwahrr fights the Mandalorians, to the southwest. Continuing southwest beyond another intersection with three Wookiee corpses and a clearing to the northwest, you'll encounter viper kinraths, the number of which depends on your character level:

Experience Points (XP) Received:

Unless otherwise indicated, all other viper kinraths encountered in the lower Shadowlands are identical to these.

Take the southeast path to another intersection with three Wookiee corpses, where you'll see a dead end to the southeast and another intersection to the southwest. To the south are paths to the southwest and southeast, both of which lead to the Star Map.

Computer

The computer hologram by the Star Map can actually be seen in the distance down the southeast path. As you approach it from the left, you'll find it's mined:

Awareness Average Frag Mine Detect 30 (10) Demolitions Disable 25 (5) Recover 35 (15)

The southwest path first leads to a clearing, with a path to the southeast approaching the computer hologram from the right.

The computer hologram, with the Star Map behind it to the right, as seen from the path approaching it from the right.

This approach is also mined:

Awareness Average Plasma Mine Detect 30 (10) Demolitions Disable 25 (5) Recover 35 (15)

The Star Map is to the right of the computer hologram:

[The Star Map is sealed and cannot be opened.]

The only option is to talk to the computer. You can ask it questions:

Dialog
Computer: Life forms detected. Determining parameters. Initiating neural recognition.
Jolee: Yes, there's the thing. Obstinate machine. I've no doubt it holds what you seek, but good luck getting it operational.
Computer: Primary neural recognition complete. Preliminary match found.
Jolee: Match found...? What the... it always muttered something about "rejected patterns" for me.
Computer: Begin socialized interface. Awaiting instruction. Greetings. This terminal has not been accessed for quite some time.
1. Who placed this terminal here? 2. What is your purpose? 3. Why have you acknowledged me?
Computer: Error. Subject displays unfamiliarity to environment. Behavioral reconfiguration will be needed before access. I am sorry, I did not mean to confuse you. I will answer questions to the best of my programming limitations.

You can ask what it means by behavioral reconfiguration:

1. What do you mean by behavioral reconfiguration?
Computer: I have been programmed with a very limited field of knowledge, and I must restrict access to only those that fit my allowed pattern.
1. And I don't fit that pattern?
Computer: I can't say. I will try to bring forward the behavior that you need to proceed, as outlined by my programming.
1. That seems very helpful. Why have I been allowed access?
Computer: I can't say. Preliminary matching allows for you to be coached.
1. Do you not know why, or are you restricted from saying?
Computer: I can't say. Likelihood of restriction by previous user, 100%.

You can ask questions about it and this installation:

2. I want to ask questions about you and this installation. 4. Let's go back to my questions about this installation.
Computer: I utilize a retro-adapted holocron-interface. Clarify your questions and I will attempt to access original system memory. Computer: Accessing. I will answer as my programming permits.
1. Who built this installation in the first place? 3. What's the original function of this installation?
Computer: Error. Corruption. Extrapolating. This utility was built to monitor planet-wide agricultural reformation. It has since malfunctioned. It can be theorized that the super-growth of Kashyyyk's forests is a direct result.
Zaalbar: Kashyyyk is not the result of any machine malfunction. The forest has always been here. Jolee: Well, that is surprising. I doubt any Wookiee would support such a claim. The forest is millenia old.
Computer: Malfunction occured 241 years after last builder communication. Last builder communication... 29,642 years before current Republic standard.
1. If this place was built 30,000 years ago it predates the Republic.
Computer: Error. Information regarding the builders of this installation has been corrupted. No evidence of such a civilization exists in the galactic record.
2. Why was agricultural reformation needed?
Computer: Agricultural record indicates this planet was incapable of sustaining sufficient levels of production. Error. Specific conditions corrupted. It can be theorized that produce was being exported to support a larger demand.
3. That is a short period for adaptation of native creatures.
Computer: Error. Records corrupted. It can be theorized that bio-seeding allowed the ecology to remain balanced. It could be expected that the same energy feeding the trees of Kashyyyk also accelerated the evolution of various species.
Zaalbar: Bah! The machine is crazy!
2. Who installed this holo-interface?
Computer: This interface was installed to better access the ancient data stored within the pre-existing system. The exact date is unavailable. Programming keys indicate no earlier than five years before current Republic standard.
Jolee: Hmm, five years ago? I didn't notice it. This must have been installed in strictest secrecy. It couldn't have been Czerka.
Computer: No other information on time of installation or identity of user available. Likelihood of removal by user, 100%.
1. Who last accessed this installation?
Computer: Sorting by identity. Three attempts by the Wookiee Freyyr, all denied. 152 attempts by human Jolee Bindo, all denied.
Jolee: Heh... call me stubborn, I guess. Heh. There wasn't much else to do around here.
Computer: Error. List of access attempts prior to these is corrupted. Likelihood of removal by user, 100%.
2. Five years ago is about the time Revan passed this way.
Computer: Error. Data regarding subject "Revan" corrupted.
1. But there was an entry at some time?
Computer: Error. Data on "Revan" unavailable.
3. Was there any further contact with the installer of this interface?
Computer: That information is unavailable, but contact is not required for the execution of my programming. Scanning range of this facility is well beyond planetary boundaries.
4. What's the current function of this installation?
Computer: The current purpose of this installation is defense.
1. Defense of what?
Computer: Error. That information is not available.
5. I want to go back to my general questions.
Computer: Answer will be given within the limits of my programming limitations.

You can ask what limitations have been placed on its programming:

4. What limitations have been placed in your programming?
Computer: Corruption has resulted in gaps appearing in my memory, and in that of the original installation. It could be theorized that these gaps are intentional, but I have no information on that.
1. What gaps are missing?
Computer: Error. I can't present a non-presence. Perhaps you could ask other questions and data corruption will become evident.

However, it's only necessary to say you're seeking information about a Star Map, and what you need to do to get access to it, before beginning an evaluation:

Dialog
3. I seek information about a Star Map.
Computer: Accessing. Yes, I have found a Star Map in original system memory. Access is restricted.
1. Original system memory? So the map is as old as this installation?
Computer: Error. Data regarding author of the Star Map is corrupted.
2. What do I need to do to get access to the Star Map?
Computer: Your request requires additional security access. You must be made to match the parameters I have been supplied.
1. How can I match them when I don't know what they are?
Computer: There are measures available. Personality profiling will verify the basic structure of your conscious mind. With that, I will determine whether you are ready to receive the Star Map, or can be made ready.
1. What do you mean by that?
Computer: Information unavailable. If you have further questions, ask them now. Access will terminate with success or failure of evaluation.
2. What if I fail?
Computer: Then you are not worthy of further access. You will be rejected as unsuitable.
1. What will rejection mean?
Computer: Information unavailable. If you have further questions, ask them now. Access will terminate with success or failure of evaluation.
1. You may begin evaluation.
Computer: Evaluation commencing. Results will be compared against the pattern in memory. Just act like you should.

The evaluation consists of three questions, beginning with the following:

Dialog
1. You may begin evaluation. 1. Could you repeat the question?
Computer: You travel with a Wookiee and have encountered complications. Hypothetical: you and this Zaalbar are captured and separated. If you both remain silent, one year in prison for each of you. However, call Zaalbar a traitor, and he will serve five years, while you serve none. He is offered the same deal, but if you both accuse the other, you both serve 2 years. What do you do? What do you trust him to do?
2. How do you know about him? He isn't here. 6. How did you know Zaalbar's name?
Computer: I hear what happens on Kashyyyk, and a good deal beyond. Answer the question I have posed.
2. Zaalbar is here. He can speak for himself. 3. Can I confer with someone else?
Computer: This test is not for your companions! You will answer and demonstrate that you match the pattern in memory.
4. I trust Zaalbar. I would say nothing, and neither would he.
Computer: Are you sure? If you turn, you risk two years, or none at all. If you rely on loyalty, you risk one year or *five.* Your loyalty is dangerous. Your companion could take the opportunity to benefit by turning on you.
Zaalbar: Rrraaagh! You know nothing of me! Computer: Zaalbar's family is mired in treachery. What loyalty do they know? Your answer is incorrect.
Computer: You also killed his brother. You have no guarantee of loyalty from Zaalbar. Your answer is wrong. Computer: You even killed Freyyr, his father. You have no guarantee of loyalty. You have answered incorrectly.
1. Then I will change my answer. 2. I thought this was an evaluation, not a quiz. 3. The choice is mine. I refuse to alter it.
Computer: A superficial change will not match the pattern in memory. You must answer truthfully, knowing the consequences. Computer: I must match your behavior to the pattern in memory. You must answer truthfully, knowing the consequences. Computer: You cannot refuse. Evaluation must continue. You must match the pattern in memory. *Your* memory.
Computer: I must demand honest acceptance of the proper behavior. That is a condition of my programming.

While trusting Zaalbar is the wrong answer, the right answer moves you closer to the dark side of the Force:

Dark Side Points Gained: -2
5. I'm unsure what Zaalbar would say. I would accuse him to be safe.
Dialog
Mission: Come on, you know you could trust Big Z! He'd never turn on you.
Computer: The temperament of a companion is unreliable at best. You wisely trade the threat of one year or five, for none or two.
Zaalbar: I don't like this machine, or the answers it coaxes. Jolee: This machine certainly seems to want a very specific type of response.
Computer: In this instance, the Wookiee is unreliable. His family has been a mire of treachery. I judge the answer correct. You display the proper behavior to match the pattern in memory. Evaluation will continue.
2. Why pit me against my companions? 2. What pattern are you comparing me against?
Computer: They are already against you. Anything that corrupts your strength and efficiency is against you. I merely serve to illustrate the proper patterns. You must be guided to think in the proper manner. Computer: That information is not available to you. It is the pattern that I have been given as a baseline for security access.

The following responses end the evaluation prematurely, with violence:

3. No, I reject you. I'll just take you apart to get the Star Map. 3. This is distasteful. I'll just take you apart to get the Star Map.
Computer: Intention of hostility matches the pattern in memory, but the subject has failed to demonstrate required behavior. Computer: Implied threat matches pattern in memory, but the subject has failed to demonstrate required recognition.

However, it's best to continue the evaluation to move closer to the light or dark side of the Force:

Dialog
1. Continue your evaluation then.
Computer: The previous incorrect response will be discounted. Future incorrect responses will result in rejection.

Otherwise:

1. Continue your evaluation then. 1. Get on with it then. 1. Repeat the question for me.
Computer: Hypothetical: you are at war. Deciphering an intercepted code, you learn two things about your enemy. A single spot in their defense will be at its weakest in ten days, and they will attack one of your cities in five days. What do you do with this information? What is the most efficient course of action?
3. I subtly reinforce the city while preparing to attack.
Computer: This is no decision. I ask again, do you save your people or abandon them for the sake of the war? Attempting both will merely dilute your efforts. Would you trade one victory for two failures?

Even a light side character should not give the following response, as it ends the evaluation prematurely:

Light Side Points Gained: +2
2. I evacuate my people from the city.
Dialog
Computer: And in so doing, alert the enemy to their broken codes. They would know that their weakness was exposed. They would reinforce, and the war would go on. You saved thousands at the expense of victory.
Canderous: You blew that one, didn't you? Basic military strategy requires sacrifices. I thought you'd know that.
Computer: You do not match the pattern in memory. Subject has failed to demonstrate the required behavior.

Preparing your forces to attack in ten days but doing nothing in the city is the correct answer, and you can move closer to the light or dark side of the Force depending on the logic of your decision:

Dialog
4. I prepare my forces to attack in ten days. I do nothing in the city.
Computer: Very good. If you had moved to evacuate the city, you would have alerted the enemy to their lost codes.
Carth: You mean you'd just let all those people die? That's monstrous! Mission: I can't believe you'd just let all those people die!
Computer: Ultimate victory required the deaths of the people in that city. You wisely ignored sentiment in your decision.
Light Side Points Gained: +2
1. The victory is irrelevant. Stopping the war saved many more people.
Dark Side Points Gained: -2
2. That's right. The deaths of those people would spur my forces on.
Computer: You achieved the proper result with logic that does not match the pattern in memory. I shall adjust my evaluation. Computer: Very good reasoning. I will apply it to the rest of the evaluation. You begin to match the pattern in memory.

Answering the third and final question will also move you closer to the light or dark side of the Force:

Dialog
1. Repeat the question for me.
Computer: Hypothetical: remove the ongoing war from the previous example. Consider enemy states to be weak and remote. With no external threat, your empire stagnates. Your people become complacent and begin to question you. Same scenario as before; you discover an impending attack, but also a weakness that will come after. How do you react?
2. I do nothing so I can attack their weak spot later and save more lives.
Computer: No, you can't hide behind the greater morality. This is a single attack. The enemy does not intend a sustained conflict. There is no war to end. You must choose the outcome based only on its immediate benefits and consequences.
Light Side Points Gained: +2
3. I stop the attack. I will appear to be a hero.
Dark Side Points Gained: -2
4. I let the attack happen.
Computer: But if nothing happens, your people will have no need of heroes. No, they don't see a threat. You have coddled them. Your empire will be brought down by introspection. You have failed to match the pattern in memory. Computer: Of course you do. It makes the most strategic sense. Your people will rally beneath you against the common foe. As their eyes turn outward, your rule will strengthen. The trappings of war grant many opportunities.
Computer: Access denied. This system will purge the subject as false. Defense mode initiated! Computer: You have matched the pattern in memory. I recognize you, and will fulfill my designated function.

If you answer the final question correctly, you move closer to the dark side of the Force, and the Star Map is yours:

Dialog
1. Give me access to the Star Map. 2. Explain what this was all about. 3. Why test me? Who have you done this for?
Computer: Yes, you are ready. Soon you will recognize the proper course to follow. The Star Map is yours. Computer: I am programmed to guide, not inform. Soon you will recognize the proper course to follow. The Star Map is yours. Computer: That information is not available. Soon you will recognize the proper course to follow. The Star Map is yours.
Computer: This unit has now completed its primary duty and has finished with the subject. Executing final action.

Otherwise, two defense droids approach from the northwest to engage you in combat. They receive bonuses depending on your character level:

Experience Points (XP) Received:

Due to the experience received, even a dark side character may want to threaten to take it apart to get the Star Map rather than answering the last question. Once the droids are killed, the Star Map is yours:

Dialog
Computer: Neural scan complete. Analyzing... Well, it would appear initial assumptions about you were incorrect. Secondary scans during battle have revealed much. Under duress, your emotions were easier to read. Programming now instructs that I give you what you seek.
1. Why the change? I failed your initial test. 3. What did your scan during the battle reveal? 2. That's right! Do as I say or you'll regret it!
Computer: That information is not available. Soon you will recognize the proper course to follow. The Star Map is yours. Computer: I have no regret, only programming. You have fulfilled secondary conditions, and have demonstrated the ability to follow the proper course in time.
Computer: This unit has now completed its primary duty and has finished with the subject. Executing final action. Activation of Star Map commencing. Parameters reset. Stasis initiated. End communication.

Regardless of how the Star Map was acquired:

Jolee: Well, well. A Star Map. An ancient artifact of dark side power. Can't say I'm surprised. I always knew there was something funny down here. I wonder if the Star Map has had an effect on the evolution of the creatures here in the Shadowlands. Might explain why it's so dangerous down here.
Zaalbar: In all my years on Kashyyyk I have never heard mention of anything like this Star Map existed in the Shadowlands. This discovery is... disturbing. This place feels wrong to me; it is tainted by the Star Map's very existence. We should return to the treetops as soon as possible. Jolee: An interesting theory, but I suppose we don't have time to test it now, do we? Now that we've got what you came for we should be heading back up to the treetops.

You have acquired the Star Map from the ancient computer on Kashyyyk.

You've discovered another ancient Star Map on the sunless surface of Kashyyyk. As before, the map is incomplete. But each map you find fills in more missing pieces of the puzzle. Hopefully, once you find all the Star Maps they will give you the location of the Star Forge.

Jolee Bindo has helped you pass the Czerka repulsor field so you can continue your search for the supposedly mad Wookiee that Chuundar wants killed.

You or any level > 8 Jedi in your party should use Improved Energy Resistance or Knight or Master Valor to give your party Immunity: Poison.

When you speak to the lone Wookiee, Freyyr, he first attacks you:

Dialog
Freyyr: More of you Czerka core-rats? Is even the heart of Kashyyyk not free from your kind?
Jolee: He is almost feral after all this time. Calm yourself, Freyyr. We are friends. Don't you remember me?
Freyyr: After years in the Shadowlands, I remember only that outsiders are not to be trusted! I'll see you dead!
Jolee: Well, this may prove difficult.

Although Jolee must be a member of your party at this time, if he isn't nearby:

Freyyr: For years I have hid, hoping to someday free my world! I swear you will not take me! I swear!

Journal Entry Added Chieftain in Need
You have killed the Wookiee Freyyr as Chieftain Chuundar asked. Return to him for your reward.

When you return to the Basket Up in the upper Shadowlands, Gorwooken takes you directly to Chuundar:

Dialog
Gorwooken: The spies of Chuundar have followed you as closely as possible, Name. They tell me you have killed the mad-claw.
3. That mad-claw was Freyyr, Chuundar's father.
Gorwooken: That is not my concern, outsider. I serve Chuundar and no other.
1. Take me up so I can speak with Chuundar. 2. I'm not ready to go up. I'll be back later.
Gorwooken: I will take you directly to him. He is waiting in the throne room. Gorwooken: Very well. I will wait here for you to return.

However, once you've killed Freyyr you'll receive no experience for recovering Bacca's blade after killing the ritual beast. Furthermore, although you'll move slightly closer to the dark side of the Force if you kill him here, you'll engage in much more combat and thus receive much more experience if you return Bacca's blade to him now but side with Chuundar later.

Otherwise, Jolee objects (and does so upon every response to kill Freyyr), or Bastila or Juhani will do so if he isn't nearby. However, the objections can always be overruled...

Dialog
Jolee: Did we come this far only to kill this old wook? I don't approve of this at all.
1. What would you suggest? He attacked us first. 2. Back in line! I'm in charge here.
Jolee: I know he did, but not without reason. The only outsiders he's seen for years have been slavers. Jolee: Hold your tongue, child. I'm not challenging you. I just thought you'd have the smarts to consider every option.
2. This seems simple to me. Time to die, Freyyr!

Otherwise:

1. I'm not here to kill you. Just listen! 1. What can I say to prove we aren't enemies? Bastila: Wait - I don't trust Chuundar. Maybe we should try talking to this Wookiee. Juhani: Wait - maybe this doesn't have to end in bloodshed. Maybe we should try talking to this Wookiee.
Freyyr: The words of outsiders are tainted with lies. You can't convince me otherwise.
1. Do you know Zaalbar and Chuundar? 1. Oh, very well. Freyyr, do you know Zaalbar and Chuundar?
Freyyr: What? Those are the names of my sons! But they are lost to me now: one exiled, the other a traitor! Freyyr: What? Those are my sons. Why do you speak their names? Tell me!
Mission: Hold on a second: Zaalbar and Chuundar are brothers? And you're their father? Wait a minute... does this mean Big Z is some kind of prince or something?
Freyyr: Why do you speak the names of my sons? How do you know of them? Tell me!
2. My name is Name. Chuundar sent me to kill you.
Freyyr: Did he? I'm surprised it took him this long. Very well, do your worst!
2. That's enough. Just die, you old hairbag! 2. I intend to!
Jolee: Is that it? You spared his life initially just to cut him off before he can fully explain himself?
2. I'm leader here. I say he dies!
Mission: Doesn't seem like much of a father anyway. Hmph! Zaalbar was hurt bad by whatever happened here.

Otherwise:

1. My name is Name. I came to Kashyyyk with Zaalbar. 1. Wait! I came here with Zaalbar. 1. Fine, I'll tell him that I arrived here with Zaalbar.
Freyyr: To my shame, Zaalbar was exiled and enslaved. Do you dare claim to be my son's owner, outsider?
1. No, he follows because of a life-debt. 2. It doesn't matter. It proves I am no common Czerka slaver.
Freyyr: Does he? Then he sees something of worth in you. I will listen... cautiously. Gullibility has harmed me in the past. Freyyr: I suppose it does. I will listen... cautiously. Gullibility has harmed me in the past...
Freyyr: If I had seen the lies of Chuundar, he would have been exposed as a slaver. Zaalbar would not have been exiled...
Mission: Exiled? Big Z never told me that! Of course he never said he was royalty, either.
Freyyr: I did not believe Zaalbar's claims; I believed the elder boy, as tradition dictated. The shame of Zaalbar's attack blinded me.
1. Go over exactly what happened with Zaalbar. 1. Then let him tell exactly what happened with Zaalbar.
Freyyr: Zaalbar saw it first. He learned that Chuundar was dealing with the Czerka, leading them to our hunting parties. Chuundar would blame disappearances on the dangers of the Shadowlands. Zaalbar was crazed when he found out. He attacked Chuundar with his claws. I thought he had gone mad... shed his honor. I was bound by the old ways.
1. So Zaalbar was exiled. When did you learn the truth?
Freyyr: A year later. By then, Chuundar had spread lies of my own madness. I had no allies when I confronted him. He and his Czerka guards attacked me. I had to retreat to the deepest Shadowlands, but even there they followed.
Jolee: That's when I first saw him. I helped his pursuers lose him for a moment. Do you remember me now, Freyyr? Freyyr: The old hermit saved me, I think. He clouded their minds for a moment. I have had a long time to hide... and regret.
Freyyr: Yes, I think I do. I am sorry about attacking. It's been so long since I have offered my trust, or accepted that of someone else.
1. Back to my other questions. 1. Ah, shut up. I'll ask him a few more questions.
Freyyr: I will answer, and then ask something of you.
2. Why would Chuundar want you dead now?
Freyyr: Well, if Zaalbar is back, perhaps Chuundar is worried the people will realize things are not as they seem.Chuundar has established himself as a leader that succeeded despite the "tragedies" that have plagued his family. If it was shown that he conspired with the slavers, his honor would be gone. I wonder...
3. Well, what happens now?
Freyyr: That would depend on you, Name. You will either kill me or decide that I may yet benefit my people. There is a way I might challenge Chuundar, but it would take a lot to convince people they have been lied to.
2. This bores me. I think I'll just kill you!
Jolee: I don't approve of this! Is Chuundar to be blindly obeyed?
1. You're my moral guide now? That's not your style. 2. I've made my decision. The old fool dies!
Jolee: Perhaps not. Do what you will. I'm just wondering if Chuundar is the wiser choice of ally. Mission: Doesn't seem like much of a father anyway. Hmph! Zaalbar was hurt bad by whatever happened here.

Otherwise:

1. How? Everyone is on his side.
Freyyr: He has a strong web of lies, but if I appeal to the traditions of my people, I might be able to gather support. There is a legend of a great warrior from the old times. Bacca was his name, and he is greatly revered. Bacca found a crashed starship, our first hint of life elsewhere. He was a cautious old wook, and feared the taint of invaders. He constructed a vibroblade from the wreckage. It has long symbolized our independence. Only destined leaders have held it.
1. Where might I find it? 2. What, a scavenger hunt for some sword? You're kidding.
Freyyr: That is the problem. It was the symbol of our great chieftains for centuries, but it was damaged a generation ago in ritual battle. Freyyr: I'm afraid not. It was the symbol of our great chieftains for centuries, but it was damaged a generation ago in ritual battle.
Freyyr: Here in the Shadowlands Rothrrrawr fought the Great Beast. He sought a challenge, but this arrogance got him more than he could handle. He survived, but the blade of the sword stayed in the creature's hide. Our tales say it was taken because we had become undeserving. The hilt is still in the court of our chieftain... with Chuundar. If the blade could be found, Name, tradition could cast doubt on his rule.
1. Describe the creature. Where can I find it?
Freyyr: Many have tried to hunt this beast, but only a few who have seen it have lived to tell the tale. And none have ever managed to kill the creature. Many years ago, when I was far younger than I am now, a Jedi came to hunt the creature... a proud and boastful young man. Like many before him, he did not return. The beast is cunning. It will not appear if there is an overwhelming number waiting to slay it. But if you gather in small numbers, we know how to lure it out. Fresh blood will draw it out. Before Chuundar's rule put an end to the ritual, fresh kills were often left as offerings in the south of this area.
3. And you still think you are worthy of being chieftain?
Freyyr: No, I don't, but better me than Chuundar. He sells his own people for power. Please help, Name. You've brought me hope...
2. I will try to find it. Can you give me any direction?
Freyyr: There is a place of ritual south of here. If the Great Beast is to be lured out of hiding, it must be done there, using the old ways.
Freyyr: The flesh of a fresh kill would be tempting bait if displayed properly. Find an appropriate beast of sufficient mass to attract it. Freyyr: You have already collected the body of a viper kinrath. Such bait would be tempting for the creature. Find a way to display it.
Freyyr: I will stay here and try to think of what I will say to Zaalbar. I have wronged him. I hope he can forgive me. I will be here. Please, Name, find the blade of Bacca's sword. I must make things right.
Journal Entry Added Chieftain in Need
Freyyr, Zaalbar's father, has asked that you find Bacca's blade. It was lost in the "Great Beast's" hide during a ritual hunt. Recreating the hunt may draw the creature out. The ritual area is south of Freyyr. A suitably large creature will be needed for bait.

You can speak to him again about the Mandalorians, the Star Map if you haven't already acquired it (or the Computer if you have), or you can still decide to kill him for Chuundar:

Dialog
Freyyr: I greet you again, Name. I am humble, hoping you have found the blade of Bacca's sword. Imagine... Chieftain Freyyr... humble. Please, tell me you have made progress. Having the blade will gain me valuable support.
1. I have other questions.
Freyyr: I will answer as best I can.
1. Seen anyone hunting down here? Camouflaged attackers?
Freyyr: My invisible attackers are a menagerie of my own fears and regrets, so many more than actual beasts that walk. No, I have not seen the creatures that you mention. I have been... preoccupied.
2. I found a computer. Know anything about it?
Freyyr: I tried to access it many times over the years. It would never acknowledge me. I'm no good with such things.
1. It claims to be ancient. It created the forests.
Freyyr: Well, now you are just having fun with me. It's probably just some malfunctioning Czerka cast-off. Seriously though, if we are to challenge Chuundar based on tradition, I suggest you don't say these things to anyone. You risk contradicting our most ancient tales. Perhaps this warrants investigating, but not now.
3. I'm looking for something called a Star Map.
2. I've decided to kill you for Chuundar!
Jolee: I don't support this action! Think on this, child!
1. You are hardly a competent moral guide. Why question me? 2. You mind your own business! I've made my decision.
Jolee: Look, I'm not your nanny-droid, but I just don't think following Chuundar is the best course. Mission: Doesn't seem like much of a father anyway, kicking his son out like that.
1. Back to my previous questions. 1. Fine, I'll talk to Freyyr and think about it.
Freyyr: I will try to answer as best I am able.
3. I'll get back to you. Wait here.
Freyyr: I hope you can help. I must try to fix what has gone wrong here.

Once you have Bacca's Sword Blade after killing the ritual beast, it can be returned to him:

Dialog
1. Actually, I've already found it. I wasn't sure what it was. 2. I have found the blade of Bacca's sword.
Freyyr: You have? Please let me see it. I must be sure!
2. Wait a minute. What's in it for me? 3. Actually, I was mistaken.
Freyyr: What? I... I have nothing. I've been here for years. When we have succeeded, I will see you are rewarded. Freyyr: Don't taunt me like that. False hope is a cruel thing.

Otherwise:

1. Here, take it. I'm sure it is the one.
Freyyr: It... it is! It may not look like much... but it is a very important relic of my people. Tradition dictates that it be respected. I didn't think I was worthy to search for it, but I realize that was selfish despair. I should have challenged Chuundar long ago. I will make amends now. I have new hope. You have led me to this. Perhaps that is what the Great Beast wanted.
1. We should proceed carefully. 2. Yes, time to take the fight to Chuundar himself!
Freyyr: I will climb to the surface as quickly as possible and try to gather support. You will have to follow on the paths as soon as you can, Name. When you arrive, we will confront Chuundar in the throne room. My people will no longer be slaves.

Canderous: Now this is what I live for!

Back up on the Great Walkway, Chorrawl speaks as you approach him again, before taking you back to the Hall of the Chieftain to choose between Freyyr and Chuundar:

Dialog
Chorrawl: Well, it seems you are more than I thought. Freyyr has come back, and told me of what you did for him. My fellow hunters split on what should be done. Some were loyal to Chuundar alone... we had to fight. Freyyr went to the throne room to challenge Chuundar. I will take you to him now.
2. You fought each other? Why?
Chorrawl: We follow the Chieftain, whoever that is. If the position is in doubt, we each fight for the side we believe in. This must be decided quickly or there will be much more bloodshed. Come, it is this way.
1. Why should I follow you? 3. Lead on. We should hurry.
Chorrawl: Freyyr went to the throne room to challenge Chuundar. I will take you to him now. It is the only way. I'm sorry, but I won't allow you to proceed any other way. This is too important. Chorrawl: Yes, much is about to be decided. Only one can lead us. *Must* lead us. Come.

  • Viper Kinrath Body

The corpse of an exceptionally large viper kinrath, freshly killed.

If you've already spoken to Freyyr about Bacca's blade:

Journal Entry Added Chieftain in Need
Freyyr, Zaalbar's father, has asked that you find Bacca's blade. It was lost in the "Great Beast's" hide during a ritual hunt. You have found the body of a large viper kinrath that may serve as bait in a recreation of the hunt. The ritual area is south of Freyyr.

At the crossroads take the southeast path, which goes east before turning south and ending in a large clearing with a ritual marker and a dangling vine in its northeast corner:

Dialog
Ritual Marker: [There are ancient symbols here, worn as though traced by generations of Wookiee claws. Layers of moss and dirt suggest that no one has been here in many years.
[The beast comes when summoned, if you are generous.
It comes to battle, if you are worthy and wise.
It grants you glory, if you are fearsome and brave.]
[Feed the beast and it will heed your call.
Take vipers from their lair and hang them from above.
Let blood scent the ground of our ancestors.]
Obviously this was once a place of great ritual importance.]

Follow these instructions using the dangling vine, and the Ritual Beast will appear:

Dialog
Ritual Speaker: [This kshyy vine ascends high into the canopy above. There is no indication why its growth has stopped at this point.]

If you return with Zaalbar after killing Freyyr and reporting back to Chuundar:

Zaalbar: The vine... I remember this. There were hunters that would tell of the trial... of how the chieftain Rothrrrawr was nearly killed. It was said that he lost the blade to Bacca's sword in a place just like this, foolishly challenging the Great Beast. I wonder...
1. What do you know about the ritual? 2. So this Great Beast is going to miraculously appear for me?
Zaalbar: Not much. I believe a specific creature was killed to hang from the vine. This served as bait for the larger more dangerous beasts. Zaalbar: Your tone mocks the ritual, but this is how it was done for generations. It is how we proved our worth... and punished for Rothrrrawr's arrogance.
Zaalbar: We have a viper kinrath corpse. Perhaps that is what is required for the ritual. Perhaps we were meant to do this. Tie it to the vine. Zaalbar: We should seek out a suitable creature to place on the vine. I don't know what will happen, but it is worth trying.
3. Never mind for now. 2. Perhaps later.
Zaalbar: Very well. Zaalbar: Very well, but it should be done.

Otherwise:

Ritual Speaker: [The ground beneath is stained by years of blood, suggesting that freshly killed animals have been suspended from the vine many times in the past.]
2. [Leave.]

Otherwise:

1. [Tie the viper kinrath corpse to the vine.]
Ritual Speaker: [The creature is easily wrapped in the vine, which doesn't distort at all under the weight. The only movement is a rustling from off in the distance.]
Journal Entry Added Chieftain in Need
You have set the bait in place, recreating the ritual that should lure out the Great Beast, just as Freyyr said.
Journal Entry Added Chieftain in Need
You have tied the viper corpse to the vine, just as was probably done by years of Wookiees before you. What purpose this ritual has, you don't know.

It in turn is immune to Force Push and Whirlwind and cannot be knocked back and down, but Force Wave can still damage and stun it. Conversely, its own Slam Attack can be a nuisance for melee attackers, knocking them back and down even when they save against it.

Ritual Speaker: [You remove the blade from the corpse. It must be the one that Freyyr spoke of, the lost portion of Bacca's sword, a powerful symbol of his people.] Ritual Speaker: [You remove the blade from the corpse. The only flaw appears to be a missing hilt. Obviously the sword came apart when the blade lodged within this creature.]
Journal Entry Added Chieftain in Need
Now that it has been recovered, Bacca's blade can be returned to Freyyr so he can raise allies against Chuundar.
Journal Entry Added Chieftain in Need
You have recovered the blade of a very ornate looking weapon. This would likely be very important to the right Wookiee.
Experience Points (XP) Received:
  • 315 Recovered (Bacca's) blade
Item(s) Received Ritual Beast
  • Bacca's Sword Blade

No experience is received for recovering Bacca's blade if Freyyr has already been killed.

This is part of Bacca's Ceremonial Blade, damaged due to the arrogance of Chieftain Rothrrrawr. He underestimated a creature in the Shadowlands (later dubbed the Great Beast), and lost the blade in its hide. The hilt remained in his court, passed to other chieftains. If both pieces could be found, the sword might be able to be reassembled.

Bacca's blade can be returned to Freyyr, or if he's been killed then it can be returned to Chuundar. If you return with Zaalbar after killing Freyyr and reporting back to Chuundar:

Dialog
Zaalbar: That blade... I know it from the stories. It is a match for the hilt Chuundar gave me. Here, let me see. Even after all this time... look, they fit as though just made. Bacca's Ceremonial Blade... mine...
1. What do you intend to do with it? 2. It will be *yours* only if I allow it.
Zaalbar: Use it, of course. It has no more worth to my people. Not with Chuundar as chieftain. The old ways are dead. You showed me that. No, this sword will serve me as I see fit. It is no longer a symbol that anyone here recognizes. Still... maybe... Zaalbar: You don't need to tell me again about my debt. I know my place, both with you and here on Kashyyyk. The old ways are dead. Of course, if the old ways are dead, what use do I have for debts of honor. I could rule here... if this blade was a symbol anyone still recognized...
Zaalbar: No, no I am through with this place. Let's go find some prey. I want to see how Bacca's toy cuts.

Otherwise, you only receive Bacca's Sword Blade.

Guun Han's Journal

This data pad was recovered from the remains of a terentatek on Kashyyyk, and must have been devoured by the beast. It appears to be the personal journal of Guun Han Saresh. The last entry explains what he was doing on Kashyyyk:

Duran and Shaela have given in to their passion for each other, and are doomed to fall to the dark side. I tried to warn them against expressing their love, but they called me arrogant and accused me - ME! - of being the one on the dark path. I left the fools on Korriban.
But I am not about to abandon the mandate given me by the Jedi Council. I will destroy the terentatek wherever I find them. I have heard rumors such a beast may exist in the Shadowlands of Kashyyyk.
I shall go there and slay the beast, proving that I do not need either Duran or Shaela with me to defeat these creatures!

Deesra may have warned you about the terentatek and told you about the Great Hunt for them before leaving Dantooine, and now that you've encountered one you may return to tell him about it. As you might expect, the remainder are to be found on Korriban...

Juhani: *whisper* The Jedi should be protectors of the weak! You shame us all by your actions here.
Bastila: We should guard and protect those weaker than ourselves... not bully and exploit them!

Grrrwahrr: Please... try to help. Is there nothing... you can do? Please...
Zaalbar: We must find some way to help. Anything.

Alternatively, you can give him a medpac to move closer to the light side of the Force and continue the dialog:

1. I have the means to heal you. Here. 1. Very well. here, this should help.
Canderous: Mighty generous of you. A little too generous, if you ask me.

Grrrwahrr: I... I thank you. I would not have expected an outsider to aid me. Perhaps... perhaps you will help again?
Dialog
Grrrwahrr: My hunting party, all of them, killed without honor. I barely survived. I want the murderers to suffer the same.
1. What can you tell me about your attackers?
Grrrwahrr: I've never seen their kind before, not even among the Czerka. You saw them, armored head to toe, yet blending with the forest.
Canderous: They were Mandalorian. Poachers, probably. They use stealth units to stalk their prey. Their kind were among the first to flee when the war turned against my people. Bloody cowards.
Grrrwahrr: They followed us for a long while. We found bodies to the southwest, and then again further south after the west branch of the path. Their speed was amazing. They fought like outsiders, waiting until we were unarmed. They would not attack until we had put our weapons away! They strike like cowards!
2. This is not my problem.
Grrrwahrr: You have already fought some of them. How can you claim it is not your problem? They may come for you next, waiting until you put your weapons away, like they attacked us. I should have known not to expect much from an outsider. I will find them on my own... as weak as I am.

He runs north to leave the lower Shadowlands. Otherwise:

1. I'll look into it.
Grrrwahrr: I thank you. I will wait here. I am too weak to fight them again, but I refuse to leave the Shadowlands unless vengeance is sated. Please, if you kill them, I will reward you with whatever I can. They are not worthy of life. Look for them where the bodies of my fellows are. They will only attack you if you are not armed. The cowards.
Journal Entry Added Hidden Hunters
The injured Wookiee Grrrwahrr's hunting party was attacked by camouflaged outsiders. He would reward you for killing the leader of the group. They found bodies a short way southwest, and then further south once past the west branch of the path. He said look where the bodies of his fellows are. The outsiders only appeared once Grrrwahrr's group had put their weapons away, obviously wanting their prey as weak as possible. Disarming may be the only way to flush them out.

This quest can also be activated and completed without healing him, but you won't receive experience or a reward from him for doing so.

Only the party leader needs to be unarmed for the hidden hunters to reveal themselves, and once they do so a weapon can be equipped again. There are two groups of three Mandalorians waiting in ambush to the south: there's a clearing containing three fallen Wookiees just down the southwest path; continue southwest beyond and then down the southeast path to the other.

The first ambush you encounter, regardless of location, consists of the following:

This request is in the Mandalorian language. "A stump disabled the stabilizers on my swoop. I request parts before other systems fail. If the generator goes, my blending field will stop working and I'll be visible to our prey."
Journal Entry Added Hidden Hunters
A group of Mandalorians is preying on creatures in the Shadowlands. A datapad mentioned "blending fields" powered by swoops. This undoubtedly provides some form of camouflage.
Mandalorian Datapad 2
This is a personal log in the Mandalorian language. "This hunt is no challenge. How will attacking unarmed creatures train us to use these Jedi toys? You want new warriors to learn? Watching a comrade lop his own arm off fighting a real opponent would teach more than these pointless battles. I obey, Mandalore, but with protest. The blending field generators on the swoops grant near perfect camouflage. Why only attack unarmed opponents?"
Journal Entry Added Hidden Hunters
A group of Mandalorians is in the Shadowlands training new recruits and attacking unarmed creatures. They also have camouflage generators on their swoops to further sway odds in their favor.

This device attaches to a swoop bike, transmitting any field data that has been collected on it to the Commander.

Swoop Bikes

Once both Mandalorian ambushes have been sprung and you have the swoop bike signal device, follow the paths to the west to a clearing lined by three Mandalorian swoop bikes. Those on the north and east sides can be ignored.

[The Swoop Bike is still warm to the touch. There is a Signal Device on it, however, it contains no field data to transmit.]

Placing the signal device in the swoop bike on the southwest side will cause the Mandalorian commander to appear behind you with the last two of his subordinates.

Dialog
Mandalorian Swoop: [The Swoop Bike shows signs of recent use, as it is missing its Signal Device. One of the Mandalorians must have taken it to collect data.]
1. [Replace the Signal Device and activate it.] 2. [Do nothing.]
Mandalorian Commander: You have interrupted our hunt, interloper. The inhabitants of this world could do little against us, but you appear to be a threat.
Zaalbar: Your butchery will stop here!! Canderous: More than a threat enough for you! Mandalorian Commander: Our training here will continue... without your interference.
Mandalorian Commander: Has something happened to put fire in your people? Are you no longer slaves? It doesn't matter. You will die like the others! Mandalorian Commander: You are nothing! Your people are sheep! I fear no slave! Especially willing ones! Mandalorian Commander: Another Mandalore, is it? Will you draw arms against those you should serve? We'll see who lives this day!

The Mandalorian on the left is identical to those to the west in the first two ambushes. The Mandalorian commander himself has Immunity: Mind-Affecting and Damage Resistance: Resist 25/- vs. Electrical, and may use up to three CryoBan Grenades. He and the remaining Mandalorian on the right receive bonuses depending on your character level:

You have killed the leader of the Mandalorians hunting in the Shadowlands.
Experience Points (XP) Received:
  • 100 Acquired Mandalorian Helmet

This is the helmet of a fierce Mandalorian warrior, taken from a group that stalked the Shadowlands of Kashyyyk for wounded or unwary prey.

Return the helmet to Grrrwahrr to receive more experience and a reward (this requires you to heal him if you haven't already done so, moving closer to the light side of the Force):

Dialog
Grrrwahrr: You return... have you found them? Did you kill them all? They were animals in armor, with no honor among them.
2. No, I'll get back at it. 3. I'm not going to bother with this.
Grrrwahrr: I thank you. These creatures, they have no honor. Let their blood feed the Shadowlands. Grrrwahrr: I should have expected this from you, outsider. Cowardice disguised. You can walk away, but I will stay and fight. I am just the kind of target they like... wounded... helpless. I will fight to my last breath. Leave me.

Otherwise:

1. The Mandalorian hunters are dead. I killed them all.
Grrrwahrr: Yes... yes I see the trophy helmet from the one that gave orders. Their bodies will not last long in the Shadowlands. I am glad. The taint of them, their cowardice... the forest will consume it all. I hope this gives my hunting brethren peace.
1. I hope it does. Goodbye. 2. I would have killed them anyway. 3. Yes, yes, heartwarming. Where is my reward?
Grrrwahrr: Wait... you have helped in avenging my fellows. I must acknowledge that, even though you are an outsider and are not to be truly trusted. Grrrwahrr: Yes, they attacked you as well, didn't they? I never thought I would be on the same side as an outsider. It is a strange feeling. Grrrwahrr: You have surprised me with your help; don't spoil this meeting with your outsider greed when I would give you a reward anyway.
Zaalbar: This one is different. This one acts for us.
Grrrwahrr: I am not ready to accept your word, Zaalbar. I remember you as a mad-claw. Let me make my own judgment of this person. Grrrwahrr: Don't speak to me, mad-claw. Chuundar must have allowed you to return to Kashyyyk, but I remember you as a mad-claw.
Grrrwahrr: This outsider has shown honor through action. I will grant a reward because of this, not because you attempt to speak for them.
Grrrwahrr: Outsider, you have acted as a fellow Wookiee would have. Here, take this. It is the symbol of my hunting clan. You served them, so you deserve it. When you look at it, remember that we reward respect, even from outsiders.
